crap ... yes thirteenkiller that's the right second link. I thought I checked that ... oh well. Hopefully matt or jessamyn can fix one of the links.

It was interesting to me, because it gave insight into how the collective MeFi sees relationships in a more holistic way, and that there were probably things I could learn from that, that I wouldn't have in any of the threads by themselves.

Thanks for the update ... I did try a couple of other zips that were close by with no luck (but this area has had tremendous growth), so I'll just find one that does work until the Lat/Long pony comes trotting in.

GB's Sign says - "Please keep off grass"
people step on the grass and say what gives you the right?
GB charges those on his grass while swinging a bat

Was it wrong to put up the sign?
Was it wrong to ignore it?
Was it wrong to to enforce the sign with heavy handed tactics?

I hope your life falls into desperate poverty. I hope you end up lying on the ground, begging for someone to give you the rope to hang yourself with -- and you can be damn sure that if I find you, I won't give you a hand, and I won't give you the rope. I'll leave you right there, in your own personal hell, and I will fucking laugh

This says much more about the inadequacies and issues of the author, than it does about the target of the diatribe.... [more]

Hey, that Fark metafilter tag is what got me to check out MeFi to begin with (all thos many moons ago). I was peering in through the MeFi gates for the longest time ... and then Matt said, gimme $5 and I can sneak you in. I was in like flint ...
and I forgot the point of this post ... maybe it was Matt got $5 from Fark having a MetaFilter tag.

While we're talking about splitting content, another idea would be to split the front page into a "Best of the Web" and "NewsFilter". I'd vote for Best of the Web to retain the FP title, but I'd spend all my time on NewsFilter.

MeTa post: Matt's clearly not being compensated adequately...
i_cola percolated some additional thoughts ...

One idea would be to make MeFi a cooperative. The members all share in the cost (and in the off chance it made money, the profits). Maybe there is some tiering mechanism to make it fair for students and others that aren't making a living.

I'm just trying to think of ways that will meet Matt's goal of reduce the financial burden, but will also increase the sense of community.... [more]

I don't think that paid membership would require you to lose valuable members. There's a couple ways I can think of that would get around that. One is to grandfather early MeFites, another would be for a full paying member to sponsor someone. Or they're can be a pool of accounts that are given out in some fashion, either by member recommendations, random drawings. I'm sure there are other creative solutions that would work, too.

It just a question of engineering a... [more]

I'm a newbie, so take the comments for whatever they're worth.

I get my pile-on and sophomoric humor kicks from other sites that do it better. I like MeFi because of its (in general) intelligence, civility, and self-policing.

I like that people will hold MeFi FPPs to a high standard, and call someone when they post crap (my first FPP had somebody say it wasn't FPP worthy). I know it inspired me to raise my internal bar.... [more]

It may have helped if I had put civil in better context. I meant that MeFi is quite civil for a site that has not descended into group think. There are plenty of sites out there that are more civil. But its the civility of an established clique, of homogenuity. Here, you have people disagree all the time, but it rarely descends into a series of ad hominem attacks. Ok, maybe not rarely ... but it doesn't seem like it is that bad compared to the rest of the web.

But... [more]
