Ask post: When Should Isaac Laquedem Stop Reproducing?
Well, I should have said- the percentage of the population can be answered in the form of a function, which I have absolutely no idea how to construct. The difficulty would be figuring out what percentage of the population you reproduce with- one in four thousand?

Hmm, really good points from metahawk, Flunkie and qxntpqbbbqxl. Maybe I should be thinking of the descendant problem as thus- a rolling population that consists of the first two generations coming after Isaac's heirs, which I believe should eventually reach a constant- by year 200 or so, there should be a set population of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which doesn't fluctuate, as Isaac's reproduction doesn't wax and wane on account of external events. So his chances of... [more]

Ask post: When did boys start pretending the floor is made of lava?
There's an episode of the Venture Brothers where a shot of Jonas Venture, working hard to decipher alien radio transmissions, pans back to reveal his son, Rusty, hopping around on the carpet. Rusty says, "...but you can't touch the RED ones, because they're LAVA!"

21, from Kentucky, definitely played this. It was always lava for me.

Ask post: What's the real mystery here?
Man, these are all such great ideas.
The way we're thinking it, the cat disappears only to make them start thinking about what happened at the party. The cat just ducked out the door at some point, and will return to the apartment a few days later.
I'm thinking what it may be is that the two people who are investigating, a girl and a boy who live together but aren't dating, hooked up in a bedroom. The next day, they find the bedroom mussed and a used condom on the floor,... [more]

Ask post: Help me troubleshoot a down-home style network.
How do I turn on NAT? I already have distribute addresses set up, and it mentions that NAT and DHCP will be used to share a single IP address.

Argh. Okay. So far-
The Airport is set up like so- Manual IP address, distributing IP addresses, sharing a single IP address, with the DNS already in. This is how I had it set up before. But it's still only letting me connect by Manual IP, with one computer.
posted to Ask Metafilter by 235w103 at 10:12 PM on November 21, 2007
Yeah, it does. It comes up with the IP address of the Airport, plus one. But it still doesn't pull up any pages.

It works!
I was just sitting here, pondering, and I wondered what would happen if I turned Distributing IP addresses off, and then on again.
Which I should have thought of before.
Thanks, everyone!

Ask post: What can I do with a Cultural Studies degree?
The Canada's Harvard thing was a joke from me, but many people here buy into it fully. Six of one, half-dozen of the other.
I'm slightly worried that I won't be able to get internships- every time I find one that I think I might like, I worry that it'll already be filled with the previously mentioned overachievers. I'm currently working on a student literary magazine, contributing to a 'zine and maybe doing some short films- would this be enough to get my foot in the door?

It's Soex. I found a thread on it elsewhere, that has a picture of the ingredients side.

Why would they put it in pig latin? This all confuses me.

O'Hare. Specifically, I'm staying here. The shuttle driver recited a long rote speech of the things I could do within walking distance of my hotel, and they all involved going to a gas station or a fast food restaurant.

Ask post: How can I be less empathetic?
Sort of; I was put on clonzepam because I was having anxiety attacks. I guess it depends whether it's a anxiety thing or not. I thought that perhaps it might be the empathy causing the anxiety, though, since a lot of the anxiety comes from seeing other people having hard times. I'm actually hoping that it's just an empathy thing, because, on account of my old psychiatrist, I now do not get any insurance coverage for psychiatric care, so I can't go see anyone for anxiety. I guess I'm wondering if... [more]

These are all great answers.
I've tried meditation, but ever since I was a kid I've never been able to physically relax- my muscles don't untense.
I was diagnosed as bipolar, but it was by a psychiatrist who sort of fucked me over and got me hooked on some Bad Pills, so I don't know what to do about that.
I do think it's related to avoiding conflict, but once I know that, what do I do about it? I mean, even if I know the reason why (yelling alkie grandparents... [more]

Ask post: When was the last time you changed your mind?
I used to be hard-core fiscally and socially conservative, and identified with the Republican party. Now I'm very socially liberal, although I retain my fiscal conservatism. I now identify much more strong with the Democratic party. I mainly changed as I started to see multiple real failings of my ideology in the real world, over the course of several years.

I would posit that very few people are swayed by singular arguments (as in ferociouskitty's case), but are instead convinced by arguments taken in aggregate.
So maybe there IS a reason to have the same religion/politics/whatever thread over and over again?

Ask post: A couple of shots so I can have the shots.
I posit that, while smoking a bit of marijuana may be more effective, the possible hassles of such an approach may far outweigh the benefits. As everyone has said, talking to your doctor/dentist is the best way to go here.

Ask post: sex tips please
I call it the "ol' filthy cock."

Buutttttt seriously- if you're paying attention, you're probably doing something right. It's really not so much a question of what kung-fu-esque moves you bring in as how responsive you are and how well you know the other party. This might not be true for everyone, but, after 2 years in a relationship, I feel like the sex started good and has just kept getting better as we get more and more comfortable with each other.... Ask post: How can I keep from starving?
I was depressed at the start of the summer, but am now medicated happy, for better or for worse. None of the things I'm on have loss of appetite as side-effects (although short-term memory loss is a side-effect of one, which doesn't help remembering to eat), and I feel physically fine if I get enough sleep. I work 3 days a week, which sort of structures my day, so I eat at least 2 meals on those days, and this has been going on for, hmmm, maybe 3 weeks?
posted to Ask Metafilter by 235w103 at 12:22 AM on November 4, 2005
Some people use marijuana medicinally to stimulate appetite when it has been supressed by something else, like an AIDS cocktail.

That is, literally, the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Thank you, scarabic. Thank you so much.

Actually, thanks everyone so far- my dad's a doctor, and I'll be seeing him this weekend, so hopefully I can get some information there!

Ask post: How can I sell?
Hergh. The problem is that we don't really sell much of anything, in particular. We're a store attached to a restaurant (think of an independent, quirky Cracker Barrel), and we sell a very wide variety of items. We sell a fair amount of cheap, fun stuff, like Nihilist Gum (with No Flavor) and the sort of Archie McPhee stuff. But we also sell clothing and jewelry, all of which tends to be extremely expensive (we have $300 purses); I'm not saying that we're ripping customers off, but nobody in our... [more]

It's going to be real hard to find someone who can do an entire shirt; I sell shirts I design, and no screen-printer I know has a print-area larger than 15 or so inches. It'll have to be a multi-screen job, and will be a fair amount more expensive than cafepress. If you want, message me, and I'll send you the emails of the people I use.

I had many of the same problems for a pretty long time, and am still working on making myself more open to others. I've found that the hardest part of any conversation is the start; if you can force your mouth open and say something that's relatively okay (even if your brain is shouting "YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING! YOU'RE GOING TO BE QUIET!"), everything's gravy from then out. Also, I got a job that required me to talk to hundreds of people daily, and that really helped, in terms of making... [more]
