MeFi post: Decision on FISA delayed
You think there's some important interest being served by these lawsuits.

just a teeny tiny little interest called THE RULE OF LAW.

MeFi post: Buy Now, It'll Only Go Higher
"The first point that I think needs stressing is that oil and gas prices have been on a sustained upward trajectory for years. A gallon of unleaded regular was $1.55 in November 2000, and has more or less risen steadily ever since -- people were making a big fuss about $2.00 a gallon oil in 2004! The price of oil in 2000 was about 25 bucks a barrel, and it too, obviously, has risen relentlessly. Remember, in 2000, $60 dollar a barrel an oil would have seemed sky-high! Now it seems cheap. MeFi post: Telecom Amnesty Bill Tomorrow
Right now, if you know you were wiretapped, you can sue the telecom companies for breaking the law that says you can't wiretapp

the EFF has filed a class action against at&t and others. the legislation essentially negates the suit and any other forms of recourse.

well, not just that. there's also the rule of law that is now more or less negated.

MeFi post: iPhone 2.0
Therefore to make a 32Gb iPhone they'd have to create a physically different board which would throw everything out of whack and probably isn't possible in the existing case.

except there's a 32gb ipod touch, which blows this theory totally out of the water.

MeFi post: Back Story to the folk song "Tom Dooley"
man, two days ago i was listening to the new grand archives record, and after the last song the next up was grayson & whittier performing "tom dooley" on that 'people take warning!' comp and i had this whole flight of fancy on ol' tom dooley, for like 15 minutes, wondering what it was like when he was on the lam.

and now this post. is that more synchronicity or baader-meinhof?

this is like one of those times when someone says "(previously used turn of phrase) would be an excellent band name" only it almost never is. except this is hilariously awesome. although i'm not exactly sure where "San Fransciso" is -- is that what they call the Typo District?

MeFi post: Spring And By Summer Fall
i think some of you may not be getting the point... the recent trend industry-wide is an increase in total dollar sales, but a decrease in tickets sold. meaning that fewer people are paying more to see the same stuff as ever.

the question the main article is asking is, in an era of fragmented audience and declining record sales, what is the entity that will develop any act into an arena-filler? it just doesn't exist. so what happens when the current (old-ass) arena... [more]
posted to MetaFilter by Hat Maui at 6:18 PM on April 11, 2008
similarly to the record business, where most acts lose a label money but the ones that go big will pay for the failures, you have to take certain shows and risks over the course of your relationship with an agent or artist manager that you know or suspect will take a financial hit in order to get the more lucrative stuff. so live nation, or AEG live, or whatever other large promoter that might be producing arena shows needs those "whales," if you will, to make the other stuff viable.... I don't think I can name a single female who does this

lisa lampanelli, paula poundstone, kathy griffin, amy sedaris (especially via her 'strangers with candy' character jerri blank), janeane garofalo, sarah silverman -- they all self-deprecate about their own physicality. it's a natural part of pretty much any good comedian's act. you are permitted to mock others to a much larger degree if you mock your own shortcomings. people generally aren't... MeFi post: Lisa Diamond's Place on the Web
It just gets hard to dissect out any idea of "innate" women's sexuality or men's sexuality from the social contexts in which sexuality is constrained.

how can you have sexuality (or much anything else for that matter) without social contexts? would people that live in more tribal or primitive circumstances that are largely untainted by modernity and "mass media" have a truer approach to innate sexuality?

ok, so then what was your point again? it's difficult to do the thing that you can't do?

kinda not getting the buckley-disdain this thread is replete with. to dismiss him as only meaningful in the context of the tragedy of his death or as an npr-crowd pet (you have, i assume, listened to npr enough to make such a snide insinuation, but not enough to be the very sort of listener you imagine you loathe -- that's a neat trick) or even more absurdly, as simply a '90s rocker dude with a guitar and a pretty voice who conceals his immateriality with bombast and bluster, as the posted... You can quote Ann Coulter or you can quote Noam Chomsky, it's all the same fucking thing: the hope that there will be some fucking war that will change things once and for all.

this is almost too dumb to respond to, but for the record: chomsky is a pacifist and has dedicated his life to stopping wars. coulter is a ghoul who cheerleads for the powerful over the powerless. the fact that you could falsely equate them says you need to read more.

FWIW, that wasn't really my intent. i found it funny because kids are funny. i guess the "dumb shit into comedy gold" post framing implied that i think the kids are stupid, but that's not the case. i just wanted to incorporate "alchemy" in there, because, well, SCIENCE!
