MeTa post: Sideblog snaps and props
i've always had the impression that Ricky Powell is the originator of Oh snap! as you alluded to (but didn't state directly) in your comment in that other thread, D_W.

and that that was why his photo book was titled that -- he was indelibly associated with the phrase. in fact, wasn't his column in 'grand royal' magazine called Oh Snap!? and it was all jokes like this one: "I love poseurs who front like they have 'the kind' and then show up with some Haystacks... horace, my friend jason (who lives in park slope and is in anaheim for the conference but isn't a mefite) saw you on the bus today and was emailing me about it. you: wearing metafilter shirt, with mefi handle nametag.

so, there's that.

can we get back to the discussion about the TV show we're going to collectively produce about three aggrieved conservative lawyers who all live in the same building in park slope and their twisted relationship with a left-skewing website?

MeTa post: What gives?
USian political posts in an election year are held to a higher standard of "please make an effort if you want someone to care about and considerately discuss your content" quality which was not reached by your five word post.

why was "don't do this here" the proffered deletion reason if the real reason was "your post didn't quite reach my standard of quality political posting in an election year"?

What we need is a Malthusian candidate. I'd settle for a Marcusian, though.

how about the Methuselahian candidate? McCain is so old OMG.

whereas of course if someone suggested they try posting at a right-leaning site they'd be positive they wouldn't be fairly treated

be great if you could come up with an example of a comparable right-leaning general interest site and maybe we can try a little experiment. but the hardcore rightwing sites countenance no dissent whatsoever.

and if this entire thread is not the biggest example of concern trolling i've ever seen, i don't know what is.

will scientology's tenets seem so absurd or outlandish in 100 years? how about 1000? how about when it has 100 million adherents? time and history does quite a bit to rehabilitate the outlandish.

MeTa post: "Silent" comments on Projects
in agreement. who's afraid of the discussion? stavros' seemingly dim view of this place where he spends many hours notwithstanding, does anyone really think that someone's project (read: "baby") would attract the same vitriol that someone's mefi post about, say, bug fights or rape haiku?

the site protocol essentially says, among other things, you shouldn't be too invested in posts to the front page (thus the prohibition against self-posts and the more' against... [more]

stavros, there was nothing sidelong about it -- i was making a general observation about your tendency to look at many of this site's participants and their comments in a less-than-charitable light. to me, you seem to be the proverbial diner who complains about how the food is terrible and also, comes in such small portions.

this is of course offset by your many worthwhile contributions, well-earned high status, and your clear love for metafilter, which leaves me... [more]

phil, that most recent comment is much appreciated. what you said encapsulates what drew me to metafilter and subsites in the first place, and as i suspect you'll quickly learn, each of the subsites has a unique tenor, metatalk being of the gauntlet tenor. it is my favorite for that reason, although many of this site's participants don't have the same appetite for the scrum that perhaps some of us do.

was wondering if you'd consider allowing me to query you privately... [more]

a few weeks back on metafilter there was an fpp about amusing english translations in chinese grocery stores

holy fuck. okay, stay with me now -- those amusing translations? exactly the same sort of thing sewell's "thug life" image on her livejournal page is highlighting. amusing. fucking. english. translations. from. chinese.

so phil, was this "PhilCubeta" or "The Happy Tutor"?:

You will not confess, nor will I torture it out of you. You will not apologize, nor will I demand it. I will not make an example of you, Miko, Cortex, Jasmyn, Rumple, Stephen Dodson, RCM, or the others who ran in that pack keening like dogs who have tasted blood. But you will feel disgust and may even regret and feel shame for what was done in the heat of the illusion of your own virtue... [more]

Dude, he's already apologized for that—did you read his comments? Again, let he who has never committed the sin of overreaction and temporary asshattery (Hat Maui, old buddy, I'm looking at you) throw the first stone

i was asking those questions in earnest. it's clear that "PhilCubeta" as he presents himself here is sincere enough, but his characterization of what transpired on his blog as "wolves keening after a taste of blood"... [more]

that notwithstanding, kudos! "___________ would be a great band name" has a terrible, profoundly unfunny history on this suite of sites. thank you for making great strides in mitigating that ongoing injustice.

I don't know Stevens; I do, however, know his manager and that's too close for comfort for me to make an FPP to the blue about him.

uh, i think the kevin bacon laws would apply here such that "knowing dude's manager" != "post about something he's doing would be self-link." but then i'm one of those "legislate from the bench" -type liberals.

while we're at it, whether the inline playing works for me on any given occasion seems completely arbitrary. initially you said that clearing the cache helps, matt, but i've found that there's no reliable predictor of whether it will work. it appears to me to be random.

as an example, today i tried that justice link and it worked on the front page. then i tried that biz markie link, and it didn't work on the front page. going inside the thread, the biz link worked, but... [more]
