UbuRoivas' law school was a lot more fun than mine.

Tricera on Top . . . of Obama is probably the best place for a newbie to start.
Personally I liked Obama's Eager To Plesiosaur. But I couldn't stomach all that gay stuff in Obama Grabs His Ankylosaurus.

In future, can't all linguistic AskMes just be rerouted to lh's MeFiMail and be done?
No, because sometimes (albeit very rarely) he's wrong and when that happens he can be a gigantic asshole about it. He's a very smart guy who knows a lot about language, but he's just a language hat, not a language God.
P.S. Of course he's right here, "red" is absurd and his answer should have shut the thread down.

Also: I have to assume the people saying that the question was "how do you pronounce . . . ", and was therefore asking for personal and idiosyncratic pronunciations are trolling. "How do you pronounce" is obviously synonymous, here, with "how does one pronounce".
Also: It's pronounced Throat-Warbler Mangrove.

Fightin' Obama and the howlin' wingnuts
My sense, Artw, is that jessamyn kind of blew it here by "skimming". She saw the (admittedly upsetting) concentration camp images and thought they were being used just to inflame the debate -- essentially to Goodwin the wingnuts and nothing more. What I'm not sure she realized is that the debate is about Obama's assertion that his Uncle liberated a concentration camp and the right wing blogosphere's attack on that assertion, so the images were actually relevant, not just fodder.... I'd never heard of the hellban before, but it's brilliant. Think of the potential for gaslighting! You wouldn't even have to implement it, mods, just drop in and mention that it's been implemented. Then we could start ignoring the trolls and they would completely freak out.

AskMe != AskToBeJudged
Successful law students (and successful lawyers) don't have un(der)treated ADHD. They don't have self-confidence problems (if anything, they tend to have arrogance problems). They definitely don't allow false items to stay on their credit report. They don't have trouble with deadlines. They know how to handle impossible workloads, and don't spin their wheels trying to get started on a project.

dmt (about me): I would want at least five years of successful practice under my belt before I started making assertions about my status as a successful lawyer. Furthermore, attempting to refute a proposition by citing unsubstantiated anecdotal experience is at best poor form. Do not try this is practice.
Leaving aside what "you would want" (who cares?), and without making this anymore about me than it already is, I have to respond that I've... [more]

"Harmful" Flag
I'm confused again. I thought AskMe answers had to be answers. I got caught up in this earlier today, so I'll ask Jessamyn for some clarity: saying "that is awful advice" and explaining why isn't an answer. Is it close enough to an answer that it gets to stand?
Consider your example:
Q: How Do I whiten my teeth?
A1: Try a solution of bleach and ammonia! [Terrible, potentially deadly answer, but an answer.... [more]

Except we have some leeway in not exactly answering the question asked as long as we're trying to help the person. If you're offering a reasonable solution that falls slightly outside the parameters of the question, but you're not a dick and are being helpful, then the mods will probably let it stay.

TPS and hmsbeagle and a number of other users got upset about boyzone issues before and Number 1 agreed and so, over the course of well over 1,500 messages in two threads it was decided that there should be an (oddly named) "offensive/sexism/racism" flag. Cortex, I have to respectfully disagree here. Isn't konolia saying "the cure for bad speech is more speech"? And isn't that right (occasional MeFi censorship notwithstanding?) We're not talking about physical threats or even uncomfortable gazes here, we're talking about words, and I think konolia's point (maybe, though I wouldn't presume to speak for her) is that if you are fighting the good fight with words, then walking away is cowardly--or at least "fragile". If you... [more]

There's been some discussion of legal questions here, and as someone who wouldn't dream of giving specific legal advice (because I'm a lawyer) but frequently makes specific medical suggestions (because I'm not a doctor, but I happen to have a seizure disorder which I think just makes me the bees knees on all things epilepsy related), this thread has really given me reason to think.
