Ask post: Where to learn about keyboard synthesis?
Yes, sound on sound synth secrets is a good place to start.

To add on to what dubitable, mentioned - the dynamics of sound - the amplitude envelope - is often more important than the timbre of the sound in creating a convincing replacement for most actual instruments.

You should be filing, but it is unlikely that you would owe anything due to the foreign income exclusion.

I'm pretty sure this was on All Things Considered, but it might have been The World - a PRI show. I remember it too, and my searches are fruitless as well.

Ask post: Good self-help audiobooks
I would recommend two books for this, both by the same author - Dr. Nathaniel Branden.

The Six Pillars of Self Esteem and The Art of Living Consciously (no audio book.) The Art of Living Consciously is more of a world view that most people with low self esteem would benefit from, but dove-tails nicely with the other book.... [more]

Ask post: Staying on good terms with SO's ex?
The question, with pseudonyms:

Jes was friendly acquaintances with Pat & Joe separately, having a lot in common with both--he even met Pat through Joe. Pat & Joe had ugly break-up, with Pat deciding she never wanted to speak to Joe again, something she's held to. Jes was shoulder to both parties in immediate aftermath, though begged off speaking to Joe about it once it became awkward to be keeping confidences from both.... [more]

Ask post: Leviticus 20
Jesus was of the the opinion that the Law and the Prophets was completely valid. Not that he always followed them.
Peter, in Acts, with his vision from God to share the gospel with gentiles - called some laws into question. And Paul basically said that any food is clean. Alot of the current belief stems from that.... [more]

Ask post: Floss or I'll beat you.
When I was a kid and teenager I learned more from actions that I did from any advice - so if you have lessons that you want to teach, teach by doing/showing/guiding. I think the most valuable skill that can be learned is how to sell. You are always selling something, even if you aren't aware of it. But if you are looking for aphorisms, there are tons of books written for on this topic.

Here's one: Life's Little Instruction Book

Ask post: Working with my father is killing me. What can I do?
Should I quit?

Yes. You aren't happy in this job and you've tried all you can to make it workable. It's just not workable.

How do I deal with the inevitable shitstorm that comes with my resignation if I do quit?

Working with family is tough. Find some *awesome* oppurtunity elsewhere that you just can't pass up. Train the next person to take your place and offer to be there in... [more]

Point and click? You could do that with pretty much any daw that has piano roll editing capablities. Through in some 8 bit sounding vsts / audiounit plugins and you are set. For an all in one package, have a look at Reason - they have a demo. There is a learning curve, but it's no where near as steep as with a tracker.

Ask post: How can a "lazy" person develop successful work habits?
How can a self-described "lazy" person develop really effective and successful long-term work habits?

Stop describing yourself as lazy.

This is more important than Ironmouth makes it sound. Your self concept is shaped by the way you describe yourself and your life. I'm not sure if the positive affirmation approach is the best way to go about changing this, but there is evidence to support that self narrative that... [more]

Ask post: How do you get work done when life's got you down?
Do this everyday in this order:
* Eat a good breakfast as soon as you get up.
* Go for a short walk.
* When you get home, make a list of the 5 most important things to get done that day.
* Get ready for work.
* Work and get 5 things done.
* Go out and find people at least 3 times a week during your nights, try to make friends.
* Turn off your computer and TV at least an hour before it's time to go to bed.

Ask post: Are there lightweight solar stills that work?
That's quite a gamble you are taking with the weather - what if it's sunny when you get there? One gallon a day is cutting kinda close too, even if you could miraculously pull a gallon out of your still. If you use a fuel driven still, there still alot of weight there too. There's really no good solution for this type of problem that's not ridiculous expensive.

eh that should read "what if it's NOT sunny"

Ask post: I would say "help
I want to talk to someone without feeling judged. Both now and in general.

I've been described as judgemental. I'm one of those guys that wants to fix everything - if there's a problem and I see a probable solution - I'm going to point it out. Where this gets interpreted as being judgemental, is when I see a way of fixing it on the venter's end. She's still getting all this attention from you, so why would she stop?

Exactly, she's playing games with you. And when you react - in anyway - she wins. Ignore her when she's being maninpulative, and tell her you aren't going to deal with her when she acts like that if she asks what is going on. Stick to your groundrules, because if you break them she'll be back for more.

I'm so sorry that you are allergic to cats. Looking over the links, Allerca hasn't gotten any of the study's that have done released to the public for review. Ask post: Which MIDI Interface to Purchase?
MOTU makes solid hardware and has excellent support. I'm not sure what issues that salesman is talking about, did he describe them to you? M-Audio's interface's have a reputation for not have very tight timing (although most won't notice it.) I've used MOTU and Midisports, I've never had problems with either brands.

But do you really need 8 in and 9 out? really? If you got the gear or are planning on buying the gear, I would have no problem getting a MOTU interface.

Ask post: Dead-simple software for visualizing geographic data.
Those maps aren't that complicated, you could probably use quite a few GIS's to make them (a few free ones - GRASS, MapMaker) But it's not like learning a photo editing program. It is complicated, no matter which route you go. It's almost fun though. =)

I think you might want to try an alarm clock for going to bed. Go to bed at the same time everyday - get into a schedule. If you can't fall asleep after laying there for 30 minues, get up and read book - no TV/Computer and then try to fall asleep again. While laying there waiting to fall asleep, try relaxation exercises. Get on a schedule.

Ask post: Terms of Endearment
Here in Texas, papi is a term of endearment for a small male child - shortened form of papito - it's sorta like Junior. Same for mami. It's very, very common here esp with very small children.(Even when the kids aren't your own) It's pretty much universally used here in Tex-Mex culture.

Go to print it, and set options as follows:

Print Range: Current Page

Page Scaling: Tile all pages

Tile Scale: 450% (this will make an 8x11 sheet around 43 x 55)

And the rest play around with, you'll get the idea.

Ask post: help me find some cool drum sounds
i'm pretty sure industrial/glitch-y stuff wouldn't really work for us

That's where most of the freshest beats are in my opinion - going by your request for "really unique drum sounds."

So if you don't want to go that way though, why don't you go the other way - more melodic beats. So, for example, a quick guitar strum and deep hum would make up the backbone of a beat.

Sample everything!... [more]

I believe both the MachineDrum and the Monomachine (yes, I heart Elektron too) feature SID chips...

Machinedrum does not have a SID chip but has great synthesis capabilities, Monomachine has SID emulation.

You might be thinking of the SidStation, which does have the MOS6581 chip from the commodore 64's.

Ask post: How can I help my dog?
I didn't want her to feel crammed in there. But she /wants/ to be crammed in there. Think about it from a dogs point of view. If you have solid walls around you and touching - you are safe from those angles. So a dog would put her most insensitive parts (back/sides) against the wall and most sensitive - feet, face towards the unsafe (not guarded) area. So the more easily she's able to cram in there - the safer she is going to feel. This might be a reason why the wire crate... [more]
