How can I maximize my chances at an upgrade due to pregnancy?
If you're a UA Premier Exec or higher or have Star Gold status on another Star Alliance carrier, you should get lounge access in LHR on the outbound and LAX on the return. You might be able to swing a free upgrade to Economy Plus on UA (more legroom, same craptastic coach seats) but certainly not up to business class or an exit row.
On an international flight, there's going to be a list of at least 20-30 people who will get upgraded ahead of you because of frequent flyer... [more]

What to see between OR and WI?
There's not a lot to see on Highway 12 through most of western Montana through most of South Dakota. It's rangeland through MT and the Western Dakotas and transitions more into farmland once you cross the Missouri. A few highlights, though:
Miles City, MT to Baker, MT. 80 mile stretch which is basically open range. This is an awesome stretch of highway to drive on a cold, clear, moonless night -- Miles City is barely a glow on the horizon and there's... [more]

How Do I Add Fonts to GIMP? (Mac)
This is only slightly related to your question, but I would recommend against using typefaces from most "free fonts" sites on the web.
Seconded. What isn't incomplete is usually a commercial font with the ID changed and copyright stripped.

Best way to make a large poster with photoshop/illustrator without killing computer?
What kind of effects do you want to to apply to the vector part? Illustrator is surprisingly robust to the point of fault. (In our shop, we have files that take 30+ minutes to flatten when sent from a Mac Pro).

Bringing photos into Illustrator causes massive files sizes that are really unneeded.
You don't have to embed the images in Illustrator -- you can link to them just fine.

Acrobat-profilter: subscript
There's no way to do it in the app that I'm aware of --- Acrobat really is not meant for hardcore text entry. You could set the text in another program and use a subscript glyph (not subscript style, but the actual glyph) and paste it into the form field. That should work.

How stupid would it be to trash the old financial stuff?
Check with your bank. My bank (Wells Fargo) will let customers drop off old bank statements, unused checks with old addresses, etc. for destruction along with the branch's sensitive documents. My favored branch doesn't care if you throw in a few credit card statements as well.

Exporting vector graphics for large-format PDF printing
You really don't need to worry about the colorbreak. Just let your printer know in advance and tell them you want to make the RGB blacks solid black (or black + cyan or black + magenta if they use an intensifier and if you want it to look "cold" or "warm" respectively) and the greys at 40% black. If you want to pay for two colors, the grays could be easily tint matched to a spot.
And yeah, clean up your typesetting a bit. Loosey goosey tracking on... [more]

How to print annotations on a PDF?
I only have Pro installed, not Reader, but in your print dialog, is there a pop-up labeled "Comments and Forms"? Try changing that to "Document and Markups"

Going blue in the face over black
Not that I know anything about InDesign, but why can't it do that anyway?
That setting makes it output all blacks as their exact cmyk values. Often in printing you add other inks into black to increase its intensity.
djgh -- what are the cmyk values of your black?

And oh is the black actually shifting values to gray or is it just rendering as gray?

Do I have a mouse in my dashboard?
Is it coming from the engine or is it coming from inside the passenger compartment? If it's the later, it's probably a bad blower motor in the climate control system.

Postage Stamp Filter - Philippines to USA
Just send her USD20 in a nondescript envelope and be done with it --- it will cost you far less time and trouble in the long run. And be prepared to wait. Letters seem to take about 2 days to reach the Philippines and then get lost in a Philippine Postal black hole for 2-4 weeks. Mail outbound from the Philippines seems to do much better.

My first guess is that your ISP or whomever is supplying your DNS has a problem. In the meantime, you can try OpenDNS to get around the problem. OpenDNS does have some critics but, at the very least, switching over to their DNS servers for testing will at least let you prove to your ISP that, yes, the problem is them.

Can we go ahead and get married?
Worst case scenario? Your fiance is determined to have committed visa fraud and is banned from entry for X number of years.
Just do the K1 paperwork. It's not that hard and it's better to wait six months for the K1 than to get rejected when filing for AOS.

I agree that we should talk to an immigration lawyer and am in the process of trying to find one here in Tennessee. Any suggestions?
You really don't need an immigration lawyer unless your case is complicated -- and you're actively complicating your case.

Again, agreeing with Optimus Chyme. The simplest way to put this is that your printer will hate you if you embed your images.

You can always do an Archive & Install of 10.5 and then re-run the 10.5.2 delta updater. That will return your system to normalacy while preserving installed apps and all user files. (Obviously make a complete backup first.)

Most airline cabins are pressurized to about 6000 feet. The pens should be ok barring any rapid pressure changes. In which case you and your pens will be equally messed-up.

Getting a UK visa to visit China
Agree with Abiezer. If you fly into Hong Kong, you can get it done same day. I believe you can even get it done at Hong Kong and then hop a bus/train/ferry across the border into Guangzhou.

What strategy/simulation based games would I love?
If you're interested in economic games, there's always OpenTTD, an open source clone of TransportTycoon Deluxe. I'd also check out the Railroad Tycoon series... it's got enough of an economics engine to make it interesting and involves a good deal of micromanagement. As a plus it plays well on older hardware.

Help me stay on top of printing and packaging technology.
Disclaimer: I work for a division of one of your national competitors.
There's only so much that mags and trades can do for you -- it takes a couple years of doing prepress before you get into the flow. Get your hands dirty -- learn how to fully keyline and assemble a file. It's a drastically different viewpoint than design and the best way to understand is by doing.

The thought of a design firm doing prepress work without prior experience makes me shiver. Like Ken said, you need to hire new good people and dip in gradually. Otherwise you're going to rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in rework, printer fines and even legal liability.
