Old dangerous playground equipment.
One of my favorite deadlies was in the local public park. Imagine a maypole built heavy chains in place of streamers with 10lb forged steel handles at the end of the chains. It was basically a child maiming flail.

Boullée in North Dakota
It's probably been 10 years since I've even been near Nekoma but, if things haven't changed, that site is still awfully eerie to drive by at night. The entire complex is lit up but there's not a hint of activity.

Looking for some dumb quotes?
Honestly, who decided that the default quote characters produced by a U.S. English keyboard were evil?
It's an anachronism from typewriters. Properly curled quotes and apostrophes would require four different dies on a type head and some way for the operator to toggle between the open and closed quotes. Computers eliminate both problems.

Possibly the best Craigslist post ever
The vast majority of responses are from complete and utter morons who apparently barely comprehend your posting no matter how thorough it was, and who want to ask a bunch of irrelevant questions.
And the remainder are scammers.

Or maybe AT&T will just filter encrypted packets. Hey, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide, right?
Of course not... not my financial information or medical records. If AT&T is going to filter encrypted packets, they're in for a rough time.

Great, plain, empty.
And the locals are protesting.
And they can keep on protesting. The demographic and economic tipping point is well in the past; hairbrained economic development schemes buy a few years but can't overcome the longterm trends.

Signs?
miss lynster: The places I've been where traffic isn't controlled... it's true there aren't as many accidents. But the ones that occur are more often than not really bad, fatal ones.
That's because the traffic snarls before it gets going fast enough to cause any major damage if any damage at all. The only truly terrible accidents I saw while living in the Philippines either involved too many people on a small motorbike or the few stretches where one... [more]

Dakota, the Last Dinosaur
Wow... incredibly small world. I knew this guy back when I was in high school and he was in junior high. Marmarth is only 40 miles down the road from my hometown; I've been out on digs around Marmarth.

While this is cool, it would be great if Adobe would concentratr on making existing products, like Illustrator, work properly and then make flashy Flash experiments.

McDonald's Options Worldwide
flod - You can still get the taro pies at McDonalds if you're willing to fly to the Philippines. I think they're a part of the regular menu. I'm not a huge fan of McDonald's and, unlike some people I know, don't subsist on a steady diet of the local incarnation of a BigMac and Fries when traveling. Localized McDonald's is more of a curiousity for me, for the service level instead of the menu. It's a little unnerving to walk into a McDonald's and see a spotless high-gloss floor and an unnervingly... [more]

Exploding Storm Drain
@andywolf: i was wondering if it was minneapolis as i watched. elpacito's link says the video from '04 was in minneapolis.
I think you're right. If I'm not mistaken, that storm grate is just north of the 46th street overpass on 35W.
What I love about the video is that people are still damned determined to drive through a giant geyser in six inch deep water. Typical.

A million who leave
It's telling that there are special immigration lines, just for overseas workers, at all three international terminals (Cebu-Mactan, NAIA I&II). It's odd how streamlined the system is, more like export control than immigration control.

Little Humor
I first read about the selection after I'd spent close to 16 hours on a plane --- my brain decided to turn 'Rich Little' into 'Little Richard'. It certainly would have taken the whole event into the surreal.

That handout, which was not part of the textbook's materials, asked questions such as how evil could exist if God is good and all-powerful.
Junior Lanae Olsen, 17, said it all went too far.
Any Christian theologian worth their salt would love that challenge.

That's the thing - in every case I've heard of schools getting rid of feathers/braves/redskins/what-have-you, I have not once heard of an actual Indian say that they were offended, and very often hear tribes supporting the logo/mascot.

Not true. My firewire baed iPod works just fine with iTunes 7 on my MacBook Pro. (I keep only audiobooks and long, spoken word podcasts on it... it lives at work but comes home on the weekends if it needs updating.)

Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis doesn't seem to be a failure to me, but I've only seen it a couple of times.
Retail on Nicollet seems to do ok, but that's largely because the pedestrian mall works in conjunction with an excellent skyway system, enclosed shopping, and nearby cheap parking garages. I used to shop downtown all the time, preferring to deal with downtown rather than suburban parking lot idiots.
One solution I can see... [more]

Not that the answers make it any better.
I think I can safely say I've never entered the information and subsequently had the operator just know the information. They always make me repeat everything.
I've only had it happen a couple times. Usually it's local companies, my bank (but they do ask for my DOB, last for of my social, and mother's maiden name for security), Apple or United Airlines. UA reps always greet me by saying, "Hello Mr. Teske, how may I help you today?" and have... [more]
