Ask post: Is there a way to get my baby to stop shrieking?
My 13-month old daughter likes to shriek, too, for no apparent reason. We just tell her "No screaming" very firmly & try to distract her. It's a normal thing for kids to do. (Her "something's wrong" cries are distinctly different.)

Ask post: Breastfeeding and pumping problems
Oatmeal cookies for my morning & afternoon snacks really helped increase my supply, but fenugreek just made my thyroid levels go crazy (in a very bad way).

As someone said, replacing those white flaps can make a huge difference. And I've been told that after about a year of regular use, the PIS pump loses some of its power.

Ask post: How to memorialize someone for only $75?
You could donate a book to a library. They often have special "This book was donated in memory of ____" bookplates in the things I check out. You might even get to pick an appropriate title/subject from a list of books they're hoping to acquire.

Ask post: Looking for illustrations/cartoons from the late 50's/early 60's in a 'sophisticated' yet naiive style.
It sounds like you're just looking for retro/vintage clip art. A google search for "retro +clipart +50" gave some of the following links. Another idea would be to search for vintage ad art.

starbursts & more

Ask post: Which pregnancy test is right?
Did you use the same type of test all three times? Different tests have different sensitivity levels, so that could be a factor if they weren't all the same brand. Also, first morning pee vs. later pee really can make a difference in results if you're very early in the pregnancy.

Mild cramping is normal in early pregnancy, so don't let that freak you out too much. (That first month or so I was constantly convinced that my period was about to start... [more]

If I were you, I'd post an ad on Craigslist (if it's available in your area). This is the sort of thing that a woodworker hobbyist could make for you in no time. Heck, if you're in MN, mefi mail me; we're about to make a couple replacements for ourselves.

Ask post: What to do with all these vegetables?
No specific recipes, because we generally just wing it as we go along, but these would be my suggestions:

stir fry (everything but sweet potato)

curry (everything but bok choy & celery)

roasted veggies (everything but bok choy & celery - just toss w/ olive oil, add salt, pepper & rosemary or your favorite herbs and roast at around 400 until tender)

Ask post: best tips for a first time music festival attendee?
Harmony Park is a great place to hang out for the weekend! (We'll probably be there selling our djembes.)

Things to bring:

a flashlight warm clothes (the wind blows across the lake & it can get pretty chilly)aspirin, bandaids, toilet paper & wet wipes (the portapotties usually run out of paper & water on Saturday night & then Sunday morning when you're packing to leave is pretty unpleasant)food, beverages (no glass bottles), a way... Like one of these? one | two

I'm not sure how those compare to the script yogajournal is using. You could compare them if you want. (Look for "/* show and hide elements on poses page */" to find the relevant part.) I don't recommend just copying their code, but you can certainly learn from it. :)... [more]

Ask post: I'm an idiot about uploading stuff to the web
Are you using a FTP program or some web-based upload system provided by GoDaddy? Why are you trying to zip the file? (In my 9+ years of web design, I've never zipped a file in order to upload it.)

FTP is very easy to use. Download something like Filezilla. Type in your server info, username & password. Then you just select the folder you want the files to go into, select the files, and drag them over.

If I'm in Filezilla or on the godaddy.com file manager, is there a place I can see all my files and then click on one to see how it's working live on the site?

No, I don't think so.

Maybe I'm not understanding, but you can bookmark your main site & then type in the folder name at the end of it when you want to see the stuff you just uploaded.

Ask post: Help us with a syntax question (buffalo buffalo buffalo.)
Interestingly, German has something very similar, though it's slightly easier to parse since nouns are capitalized.
"Wenn Fliegen fliegen hinter Fliegen, fliegen fliegen Fliegen fliegen Fliegen hinterher."

The literal translation is "when flies fly behind flies, fly flying flies flying flies behind."

Ask post: Will Langerado burn my "bun-in-the-oven"?
I went to several festivals while I was quite pregnant, though they were only 1.5 hours from our home. In fact, I went into labor at one (10 days overdue - we decided we might as well go & have fun, rather than sitting at home wondering when the kid would appear). I've seen many (very) pregnant women at them, too.

My thoughts: Yes, portapotties are yucky, but if she can deal with them when she's not pregnant, she can deal with them pregnant, too. I found skirts were... [more]

Ask post: How do I make myself want to go to bed earlier?
I used to have my living room lights on a timer. When they went off, it was bedtime. If I wanted to stay up, I had to get up & turn them back on, which made staying up later a very conscious decision.

Ask post: Can you name any non-violent movies for 2-3 year olds?
Despite the recommendations above, I'd suggest you avoid Babe. It opens with him losing his mother (she's taken to be slaughtered), which still makes me anxious & teary-eyed, even though I'm 35 and have seen it a dozen times. If you can skip that opening part, the rest of the movie might be appropriate.

This happened to me about a week ago. UPS claims to have left the package on our porch, but it was nowhere to be found. I called Amazon & they shipped a replacement, no questions asked. They even upgraded to next-day shipping, so it arrived on Christmas eve.

Ask post: Pregnancy is Weird, isn't it?
Congratulations!

I had all the same thoughts & feelings, even though the kiddo was planned. One of the hardest adjustments for me was accepting that I was not one of those glowy, earth-mother pregnant women I had always thought I'd be. I was sick & sore & exhausted & the feel of the baby moving made my skin crawl. I hated nearly every second of pregnancy (except the last 2 weeks, when I felt pretty darn good) & birth, but the 5-month-old smiling &... [more]

Ask post: Ring thing
When I used nuvaring, I specifically asked the pharmacy about the "keep refrigerated" stuff on the label. They told me not to worry unless I was keeping it in the cupboard for more than a few months. Of course, they also said to use common sense and not store it directly over the stove or a radiator, etc. where it would get too hot.

The other thing is cats don't drink much of ANYTHING at one time. I can't imagine a cat imbibing more than a tablespoon of water at a time, and with other liquids (had a cat once that liked cold black coffee) they'll just have a few licks for a taste. I think it would take quite a bit of red wine to actually make a cat drunk.

My parents had a cat that LOVED beer and would get staggeringly drunk when they had parties.

Ask post: baby straight jackets?
We swaddle our 4.5 month daughter because if we didn't, she'd flail her arms in her sleep and wake herself up every 30 minutes. She sleeps better & is much happier swaddled than she is the nights we let her sleep without the blanket (because it's still in the wash or something like that). When we wrap her up she gets a huge grin on her face. It's certainly *not* a case of learned helplessness.

My husband says that overtones are usually from the drum not being tightened enough. You might also have a bad skin or have put it on wrong. So the answer to most of your questions is "maybe."

Morgan has never seen the rings shift that much during drying. The target is 3/4" down, but your 1/2-1" tilt/placement should only be a cosmetic problem. 2" is too much.
