MeTa post: Iowa!
Due to the format, I would want to be Edwards. He's the almost universal second-choice; the best position to be in in a close three-way race.

I think Edwards pulls it out. Followed by Obama. Hillary trounced.

Oh, and I don't care who wins the Republican side.

And, Virginia Tech beats Kansas. :)

Me, too! I got three flavors. My wife bought them online the same night I went on and on about them after reading about them on the Blue. Cool.

MeTa post: Poorly constructed or blatantly inaccurate.
The "we've driven off all thoughtful conservatives so now we're left with Dios a plate of beans" is funnier:)

Casting aspersions on the political "intentions" of a poster is mental masturbation at best. Agree with the poster, disagree with the poster, or ignore the post. What's so difficult with that?

Thank God Dylan put out a great one this year, or I'd be totally fucking clueless. Enjoy you're hipness today - it passes.

Being hip isn't something you have, it's something you do.

That's why I used "you're" instead of "your" (not really). And I'm still a very hip guy - in my age group. Unfortunately, doing at (close to) fifty what you did at twenty mostly just gets you stared at.

I've been accused of having a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of popular music from the fifties through the nineties, but I only recognize four or... [more]

If you like the 2007 version of Killing the Blues, you should check out the original John Prine version from 1979, and the Shawn Colvin cover from 1994. They are both excellent. I couldn't find them quickly online, but if you hunt....

Another testament to the quality and good breeding of Mefites in general.

I've used FF for so long now, I just started a new job where all I can use is IE and it took me ten minutes to figure out where everything was in IE. (It still sucks.)

Metafilter: Your cup of tea sucks "Metafilter:" slogan annoys me so I'm replacing it with something I mistakenly believe will make everyone think I'm insightful

I wasn't trying to be insightful, thanks. Nor was I correcting anyone; I was stating my opinion.

So is he a hypocrite because you think he's not acting like a normal Christian conservative, or is he a hypocrite because he's not acting like a normal middle-class American?

He's a hypocrite because he (supposedly) didn't act like a conservative Christian preacher. His job was to lead by example. If anyone can seriously claim that this man would stand up on Sunday and preach the virtues of BDSM, then the charge of hypocrisy... [more]

A lot of you guys have cartoon images of these people that leads me to think you've never spent any time with them.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Be the martyr. You got us - it's all about hate. But you seem to have forgotten one little thing: we (who are harping on the hypocrisy) didn't start it.

The right, and the religious right in particular, have latched on to a political program of hate and intolerance for a long time now. They insist on telling us how to live, not the other way around. Being nice and excusing their behavior has done nothing but allow... [more]

Yes, as soon as we completely lack empathy for a whole group of people, things will get better. We just need to get rid of the group of people we don't know who are scary and different and things will be better.

I didn't mean to imply that one group should sink to the level of the other group. Calling people to account for their inconsistencies is perfectly acceptable behavior, however. Talking the talk but not walking the walk is a huge... [more]

EB, I am in complete agreement with you, and if everyone was that cogent the world would be a better place. By necessity, we use a lot of generalizations and mental shortcuts when dealing with issues that don't affect us directly. There are simply too many subjects and too much information to parse everything completely.

Are the opinions of the hypocrisy-claimers part blowback due to the political machinations of the religious right? Probably. Is it fair to judge one... [more]

MeTa post: Over the Line
cortex:

With all due respect, I think the deletion of delmoi's Gonzo post was a little premature. The first FPP was definitely about Gonzales being a dick, but the new post was pointing to the whole thing taking a more sinister turn. Contempt charges, subpoenas, and a perjury investigation are all flying after this little episode.

I understand the newsfilter concerns, and I appreciate and support the administration of this site. I just think that post had some legs.

It's not like deleting posts to avoid flamewars actually stops flamewars - it just moves them here.

The commentary on this site is just as important, if not more so, than the links. Otherwise, what's the point? We could all just find our own favorite posts from our own little caves and not have to deal with others' comments and analyses, cogent or otherwise.

Reasonable people will differ on what's important or interesting, but here Matthowie,... [more]

here are many civilians for whom handguns are daily-use items: hunters, farmers, ranchers, back-country campers, security guards, rent-a-cops, etc.

I very strongly disagree. If long guns were "a more accurate and efficient choice" for rent-a-cops and security guards (not to mention police), they'd carry them as their primary weapon.

That's why I said in almost every situation. They carry sidearms for portability (and note that they are holstered and in the open). But I guarantee you, if a cop has time, he's gonna grab the shotgun out of the... [more]

The military Times papers speak for the military...

Both statements are just wrong.

That ellipsis deletes the second half of the sentence, which kinda completed the thought. The Times papers are targeted publications and, by necessity, spend most of their time preaching to, and about, the choir. I stand by my statement that they would not do this if they didn't believe they had the troops on their side. Jim Webb... [more]
