Today at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, a Buddhist monk (Mahayana, since he was from Bhutan) tied a yellow piece of yarn around my wrist. Being as this was in a temple, I'm assuming this had some religious significance.

Doughnuts and boiling water. In the 1928 edition of
The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book, a recipe called 'cheap doughnuts (without shortening)' has a bizarre method.

The front porch of my 1926 non-historic house needs to be refinished. It has peeling paint over stain, is developing 3-4mm wide cracks and when I make it down to wood, the boards seem to be damp. Small ants come spilling out when I turn off my orbital sander.

I just got a letter from my home insurance company (US) saying I need to have an inspection. I've been with them for over 3 years, no claims. Should I be worried? Are they setting me up to cancel my insurance? I've not heard of such a thing before. I'm considering calling my mortgage company, and asking if this is SOP.
I live in a working class town, house built in 1926, in decent shape. I've been making repairs as I could afford them (and figure out how to do them). Because of the age of the house, I'm sure they could find something nasty, if they were really looking.

US fridge-filter. I am trying to find a large refrigerator with a very small freezer. My google skills fail me, and I cannot find any sources that easily provides this information (especially since manufacturers don't report usable cubic footage). Suggestions are also welcome, although it must be Energy Star and shelves that slide out are highly desirable.
