Post a joke, go directly to jail
I think some responsibility for the arrest should go to the blogger who turned over the IP address of commenter. He wasn't legally required to turn it over, and he must have had a better sense than the authorities that the comment was sarcasm.

There once was a girl named Lenore
next to some lovely white hens,
I spotted a cart that had been-
glazed by the rain,
causing me to proclaim,
upon this, so much depends!

The Great Failure of Wikipedia.
airguitar, sounds like you're describing blogging. ;) Why do we need a centralized service like wikipedia when we have a million experts and search engines? You can "edit" anyone else's work on a topic by linking/writing your own and building an audience.

Girl power!
hmm, George Lucas filmed American Graffiti in Petaluma, and now Lucasfilm executives are negotiating with teenagers there. I think this new movie could be a sequel!

How To Deconstruct Almost Anything
This article has been around for at least five years. I know I linked to it in '98. That's why it feels so out of date.

Check out the new $200 bill.
With this story attached maybe the cashier could get $200 for it on eBay. And wouldn't that make the bill worth $200?

Fahrenheit 911
It's a catch-22 for lefties. If they make money on their project, they're attacked for being self-serving. If they do it for free, they won't reach a wide audience and they won't be able to do it for long. Do other filmmakers get attacked like Michael Moore for self-promotion? It's the film business...it runs on promotion!

There are lots of documentarians making lots of great films and showing them on PBS and lots of others venues. But no one doing that gets rich.
Once again I think it's the catch-22. If Moore would be a good liberal and keep his leftist beliefs in the tiny public spaces we have provided for leftists all would be fine. But the minute he makes a wildly popular film using many of the tactics of popular filmmaking (right or wrong) he is condemned. Michael... [more]

halliburton
This article doesn't mention Halliburton's oil firefighting contract...which was awarded well before the war began. (March 6, in Forbes.) Don't feel too bad for Halliburton, I'm sure they'll still get a cut of that supplemental $74.7 billion the President asked for.

God bless those courageous stars
I know it's easy to take shots at rich celebreties when they speak up for causes, but that's the crappy way things work. Janeane Garofalo sort of summed it up, "I would much rather [the media] talk to Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. I think that would be fantastic, and they certainly know a lot more than I do, but I have access to the media." I appreciate it when they speak up for a good cause...however ironic that is.

if you're going to quote someone, quote the whole statement, not just the part that makes you look good.
pxe2000, here's a transcript of the show where I heard the Garofalo quote. It doesn't have anything to do with clinton, and I don't think I quoted it in a strange context. Anyway, you can read the whole thing for yourself.

Ode to Ode
I always assumed that the heroine of the song lured Billy to the bridge and then pushed him off because he put a frog down her dress at the picture show. And after all, the preacher did see a girl that looked "a lot like her" around the same time Billy was up there.

what's worse, costas, not transfering because they might screw it up, or leaving it with them longer where they might re-sell it to someone else? I clicked on a link at my current registrar, and they handled contacting NetSol and everything. It was very painless. Waiting the 10 days or so for the transfer to finish was the hardest part.

to get Bush to condemn the statements of Falwell...
I think Bush has already condemned the statements, though maybe not in public. According to this article, "...a White House representative called him Friday while he was driving to the National Cathedral memorial service in Washington, and told him the president disapproved."

I can't buy the argument that Nader shifted votes in New Hampshire, Florida, or anywhere else. Who is to say those voters would have gone to the polls at all if Nader wasn't on the ticket? Also, Nader voters brought more liberal voters to the polls. In races where there wasn't a green party candidate they probably voted with the democrats. I'm glad there was a voice in the election saying things I believed in. The two major candidates weren't talking about issues I cared about. I happily... [more]

For the last several months, music consumers...
If they put clicks and pops in the music, someone can write some software to take them out. But if I was an artist, I'd be pissed at the music companies for messing with the music. No matter how "all but inaudible" the distortion is.

I had this idea a long time ago too. I wanted to create cheap barcode scanners, and bundle this sort of software with them. When Palms came out, I thought it was a killer app for them. When the cuecat came out, I could finally afford a barcode scanner. (free!) And now I can actually build it if I find the time. I'm glad that people have meticulously documented their efforts, it will make my project easier. And I'll do the same.

I can see this scenerio: Little billy's favorite cartoon is Clerks. He just loves that wacky Silent Bob. He's at Blockbuster with his Mom when he spots "Clerks: The Movie". "No Way!" he thinks. So he screams and begs for Mom to rent it. She looks at the box while billy explains that they must have made a "real life" version of his favorite show. Mom shrugs. Rents the movie. Little billy learns a lot that day.
