Self Link?
Isn't this the time on MetaTalk when we do our rude and crude search engine optimization?

MeFi and antisemitism
I ain't never heard, seen nor smelled an issue that was so dangerous it couldn't be talked about.

The funny thing is, these two comments right in a row? I agree with both of them!
This fucking thing again?
Taking three sentences out of the Mishne Torah and asking Jews to defend them, as though they have some obligation to do so is one of my all time favorite exercises.
There are tens of thousands of pages of Jewish law and there's a lot of fascinating and beautiful as well as anachronistic, cruel and mean... [more]

I also was going to buy a gift account earlier this week, but balked at PayPal. It took me a month just to get them to close the account I created to get my own MetaFilter account. It's mostly having the account with them that bothers me. They also do straight out credit card processing now, which is more trustworthy to me.

delmoi: No. I set up the credit card processing with PayPal at my last job. It works just like it does at other sites with no indication it's PayPal and no signup with PayPal process.

Metafilter: We Love Taglines!...
When I first got to MetaFilter, I thought that there was some script running on the site which caught the taglines people made up and displayed them randomly as the taglines below the logo. Boy was that a stupid idea.

Of course if another student's parents (whose own parents were Nazis made rich from stolen Jewish gold during the war), paid for them to have an expensive tutor in mathematics each week (perhaps a member of the Columbia Mathematics Faculty), then that would be completely fair.

My invisible sky wizard told me to eat apples covered in honey tonight after a nice dinner of braised lamb, then say some prayers and do some thinking over the next ten days, at the end of which I'll do some more organized thinking and prepare for the next year. He also told me to apologize to a bunch of people.
One of the most important things my invisible sky wizard told me was not to use him to stick my nose in other people's fucking business, and to give other... [more]

It's not a bad idea at all, but does this happen often enough to warrant it? Even if it's preventative, though, still worth considering.
Over at the Ambrosia Software boards and irc channel we have some moderators/ops from Europe and Australia to spread out the coverage and it catches this kind of stuff in no time.

All of my discs went out way before the deadline. So far I received only 1 disc from scodger, but the fact that's it's full of New Zealand stuff I have never heard of makes up for the fact that no more music has arrived yet. Good on you scodger.

As long as no one was familiar with his YouTube account name, bob sarabia.
The situation described is not self-linking. Eideteker did not have any involvement in making the video nor knows anyone connected to it, gains no monetary, traffic or other tangible reward from it, and was conscientious enough to ask.
Of course had Eideteker simply created a throw-away YouTube account, posted it and then linked to it, no one would be the wiser.... [more]

I got PayPal a long time ago to buy a bunch of rare music on eBay on a whim. I hated it. Whether it was so or not, I always felt my information was insecure, and that all the phishing attempts were a total bother. It was also a bother cancelling the account.
Knowing all of that, I registered again just so I could get a MetaFilter account. It was also a pain in the ass to get rid of. I've been wanting to buy an account for my girlfriend for some time as she reads the site... [more]

eustace, the easiest way out of this is to go back to the source. Write your own melody over the chord changes.

cortex, last time I checked this wasn't Ask MetaFilter. I don't have to "answer the question." The question of covers has been pretty well covered. Someone gotta be paid. I'm not going to go into offering advice on this because even though I'm heavily involved in digital distribution, all the necessary information has been offered.
Playing over the changes with a new melody was how many jazz greats got around this issue of somebody gotta get paid back in the... [more]

Obviously the best system to control this is a personal honour system of demerits. Open a spreadsheet and start yours today. Every time you pee in the MetaFilter pool, give yourself a demerit. Every time you do something truly wonderful, take away a demerit. Oh, I think I've found a flaw.

It's been a while since I visited my profile page....
What if every MetaFilter user got a nice sheet of card-stock paper, a number 3H pencil and a white mars plastic eraser and copied down the information on their user page?
Then, every time they changed something, they could add those changes to the piece of paper or erase them as the case may be. The paper, pencil and eraser are easily transported. In fact, the paper itself can be folded and placed in a pocket, hand bag or bicycle messenger bag.... [more]
