Electric dog fence

Electric dog fence: My parents have a large farm property next to a busy road and want to keep the dog from crossing into the road, but otherwise unrestricted on the rest of the property. Most electric dog fences I have seen form a large circle, with the dog inside the circle. However the property is too big for that, is it possible to have a wire just along the road, activated only when the dog crosses the line?

What is in "punch", England early 19th C

In many of Dickens' novels he talks about "punch". Hot steaming punch on a cold night around the fire. Cold punch at a summer garden party. A ruffled character smelling of tobacco and punch. How was "punch" typically made, what's in it and why was it the popular drink of choice, indeed almost a "punch culture".

Need a library card number to access online databases

I need a library card to access online databases, in particular JSTOR, OED, Author databases and generally the more the better. My state library sucks so I guess I need to buy an out of state card. San Francisco, New York City and Boston seem to have a decent database selection. Any reccomendations for an affordable out of state library card?

What goods from the US should I sell in the UK?

I currently sell stuff (gun accessories, scopes, targets, etc) purchased wholesale in the US retail in the UK through Ebay. I want to expand the product line - what other items would be good to sell in the UK? Preferably something small to ship of high value that is not super competitive like computer parts or cameras. What would UK buyers like from the US?

Image posted on MeFi

Someone posted an image on MeFi a few years(?) ago (in a thread) that was a parody of patriotic images, like an American eagle, US flag, movie stars, popular culture, and tons of other stuff all mixed together that left one wondering what the message was. Sorry I can't be more specific but it was very funny, does anyone remember?

Book scanning business

Business idea feedback. Scanning copyright books into PDF format and lending those books out for a weekly rental fee, similar to what is being done with DVD movie download rentals. A DRM enabled self-destruct system, such as Adobe Digital Editions, would provide the technical framework. Since libraries lend books, why not lend a digital copy of the book. One digital copy out on loan for every paper copy kept in stock. Legal, or publishers nightmare?

ISO dates

Where can I find good quality dates? I recently went to a local Islamic temple open-house and they had free dates which were so good I realized I had never had a decent date before. Thanks to God I am now a date convert, but the local stores carry a pale shade of the real thing.

Airbus will announce their new "flying cruise...

Airbus will announce their new "flying cruise ship" (see pictures) this week and it will probably be beyond the cost for most people. But it made me think that we all ideally want to travel like that, but put up with crowded planes because they are fast and relatively cheap. Ships used to be the way to travel across the Atlantic, is it possible to travel by ship across the Atlantic without spending a lot of money? It seems the choices are high-end cruise ship, or low-brow freighter travel. Does an affordable, middle-market quick human transportation by ship service exist across the Atlantic?

Well, for $125,000 you can now buy a book scanning robot that will scan 1000 pages an hour of any rare book w/out damageing the book (which has always been the hold-up in the past requireing manual labour and shipment to India). Can anyone think of a business model for providing the content of old rare books online and/or DVD?

I recently signed up for Peerflix, a DVD tradeing service. So far my confidence level is low, seems like a lot of DVDs are listed but not available. Some DVDs (the better ones) require huge amounts of peerbuxs making them dogs for tradeing and difficult to earn enough peerbuxs. Activity level seems low and theres no one home at support and no community support group. Anyone have any experience with it?

I drive a truck which is great for long distance, car camping and off-roading and hauling stuff but I estimate about %70 of the miles are done within a 30-mile range of home. As I recently switched home electricity to a Wind Powered utility provider (delivered via Pepco the incumbant local utility) I could now theoretically charge an electric car and be %100 pollution free. But I know nothing about electric cars reliability, maintaince, cold weather, etc... Does anyone have any experience or suggestions to offer? Ideally I'd like a car that can go 50+ mph for 40+ miles and cost under $10,000.

I need a phone answering machine that will forward my messages via email. If the email connection is down, it will have a way to play the messages mechanically like a normal answering machine (blinking red light, press play to hear messages). Other than building one from a Linux box, and not paying a monthly fee to a service, is there a commercial solution box available?
