Ask post: worst broadway
I saw Mamma Mia in London back in 2000 and, aside from the shoehorning of Abba songs, found the story to be indistinguishable from a very special episode of My Two Dads.

Q. Do you have dsl filters on all the telephone lines that aren't connected to the modem?
posted by zabuni at 2:32 PM on March 1

By DSL filter do you mean that splitter thing (looking at the filter, it's called an "ADSL Filter")?
We only have one telephone; it's plugged into the splitter which is then plugged into the modem which is then plugged into the wall.

Ask post: Slick shoes? ARE YOU CRAZY?
I guess what I really am interested in is the PG rating.

R ratings I can kind of understand—if there's a lot of swearing, violence, a lot of nudity. But PG is more that middle child—the Peter Brady of ratings.

G PG PG-13 R

PG has to be "worse" than the squeaky clean G, but not as "bad" as PG-13 or R.

I can understand the idea of going from a G to a PG, from a PG to a... [more]

The original television remote controls used tuning forks, too. No batteries; they were strictly mechanical.
My brother-in-law used to have one of these old sets. You could hold out your keys and jangle them and the TV would randomly change channels or adjust the volume.

If I remember correctly, in the movie The Island, Ewan McGregor was trying to find some information at this sidewalk kiosk that had some sort of Microsoft-branded search engine. I think he searched for two different names (or something) and the search engine couldn't find either of them. Not the most ringing of endorsements.

Ask post: Where can I find Dark Castle sound samples?
There is a video of the game being played over on youtube, but I think it's the PC version and it has the game music playing so the "nya nya nya nya nya"s are mixed in with the music—maybe not the best quality for a ringtone. There is also a Sega version of the game shown being played here, but the same issue with the overlapping music and nya's. The clips I found from the Mac version (here and here) lack any nya's. I emailed you the closest thing I could find as an MP3.... [more]

Have you tried emailing your bank? (I know often the cards only have the non-intl 800 numbers on the back) I ran into a problem like this in Nepal when my card stopped working. A couple of nervous days before I found out that Wells Fargo was revamping their global network or something meaning that I couldn't access my money. The work-around was to go to a place that did money exchanges, have them run the card as a debit-Visa and then get cash from them.

Zed_Lopez, thanks for the tip.

I wasn't sure what Conroe was exactly, but assuming it to be a processor, I did a quick google search and saw people talking about Conroes or more probably Meroms (what looks to be the laptop version of the Conroe processor) going into future MacBooks. Scrolling through forums I wasn't seeing the specifics jump out as to what would make them desirable or when exactly they might show up.

I use Office occasionally but write what I need and get out (besides I'm used to running it on a G3/600 so I can't imagine a huge hit in speed).

For other people who might check this thread later, Rob Griffiths of Macworld magazine suggests that if you are concerned about getting the latest/greatest Mac, don't buy a new machine a couple of months before the Macworld Expo in January or the WWDC (which this year is in August).... [more]

Ask post: Funny stories about money?
Not really funny but more interesting: I recall reading in Stephen Ambrose's D-Day how the US had wanted to print up (I think it was) 10-franc notes so that US soldiers would have some local cash when they hit France. France didn't like the idea of the US counterfeiting their money and said so, but the US did it anyway. (I think I am remembering this correctly) Anyway, just an interesting historical tidbit of a country conterfeiting an allies currency.... [more]

You might stop by your local art school that has film classes and offer a student a cup of joe for a 5 minute lesson.

I recall from an old film class that loading the film wasn't enough. You also had to go around the edge of the removable plate with black "film tape" which kept any light from leaking in. I'm not sure if it's just that our class had some beat up cameras or if this was a general rule for for everyone.
