Mickey Jupp
There were a bunch of guys around that time who nevvvvverrrrr quuuiiite crossed over to the burgeoning punk/new wave thing in the UK. Restless Eric and Ian Gomm were a couple of others. A lack of radio-friendly singles being the main reason for that.

Me and my 424
I can't imagine what it was like to produce recordings when there was no waveform to look at.
Yeah, it was pretty tough. We had to use our ears.

Compression to me is the hardest thing about mixing.
I get it, I know what it does, but I'll be damned if I can figure out anykind of systematic way of applying it.
That's 'cos there is no system! Every sound has its own unique qualities, and a compression setting that works on one kick drum may sound awful on another - even if it's the same kick drum in a different song, or the same kick drum in the same song if you change the... [more]

New Zealand Champion dead
I spent some time on South Island
Kolloquial Kiwi note: For some reason we say "in the South Island", rather than "on South Island". We don't say "go figure", but if we did, I'd say it.

sea forts
I'm sure an episode of the 1960s Patrick McGoohan TV series "Dangerman" was shot on one of these forts. Anyone remember?

Counter-terrorism by trial and error
Not to derail the thread, but with the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior this week it should be pointed out that the French also do terrorism. It's still a sore point and any talk of French counter-terrorism is sure to produce many a suitably Gallic raised eyebrow down here in the South Pacific. Given the less than satisfactory results of that operation, I wonder whether France's ability to perpetrate terrorism has improved as much as... [more]

Walking memory lane
NZ. Anyone else notice how much that sounds like a state code?
But please, it's pronounced "En Zed", not "En Zee".
(And the country itself is pronounced "Nyuh - ZILD".)

The nuggets may be packed full of beaks, the burgers may be, mostly, squashed intestine and the chips may be soaked in beef flavouring, but there are rare, if no, cases of food poisoning.
"...the McDonald's brand to suit local markets..."
Here in New Zealand, some years ago, we had the McDonald's KiwiBurger. It was, IIRC, a cheeseburger with a fried egg and a piece of tinned beetroot. It did very well I believe, which says something about either McDonald's, New Zealand, or DDB Needham.

Is copyright killing culture?
31d1: it is implicit by law that the crap song i sampled a half second of is worth everything, and the week or so of effort i may have put into transforming it into something entirely new is absolutely without value
Of course it's worthless now – who's heard of 31d1? – but with luck it may not be worthless in a little while. And if it does remain without (commercial) value, would you be happy in the future to see someone else take your sound,... [more]

Huygens Makes it!
Isn't it amazing how we can take a probe the size of a compact car, send it on a 7 year journey in the most inhospitable environment imaginable, deploy a sub-probe that has been dormant for that entire time and land it where we had planned on another solar body so far away that it takes 67 minutes to get a signal back and forth...
But we still can't make a toilet that doesn't back up.

When the New Zealand soccer team (the All Whites) played in Singapore as part of the 1982 World Cup qualifying campaign, long-haired players were required by Singapore immigration officials to get haircuts.
