Pyramid does a kolsch-style pilsner called Curveball for summer. I like it, but other more beer-snobby types don't.

Writing without reading?
You pretty much described my 4 year old, except she doesn't run away, she just says "I don't know." She can spell her name and other people's names and sometimes can recognize the names of her daycare friends, but she certainly can't read.
Her daycare class has been working on phonics now. Why? Because her daycare teacher feels like the class is ready for phonics. And in her opinion, my daughter is one of the brightest kids in the class -- she "gets it,... [more]

Flying to the USA - What should i watch out for?
First off, don't go on about how bad American beer is until you've had a microbrew or three.
Boston is pretty easy to get around thanks to the T. No need to rent a car, and you probably shouldn't, since the street system is a nightmare to get around. You'll be milling with the summer tourists, but it has a lot to do and see, lots of history, great museums. If you have the money, buy a Red Sox ticket from a broker.
If you want to get out of Boston,... [more]

Mickey Mantle Baseball Card
Expect to pay a heck of a lot for one.
Cards are graded on a scale with Mint at the top, then Excellent, Very Good, Good, and on. Anything below good is virtually unsaleable, save really old cards.
The 1952 Topps Mantle card is one of those Holy Grail collectibles; even good condition cards go for thousands. Prices go down from there as the years progress. You can get a 1959 Topps Mantle for a few hundred bucks.... [more]

You might need more than 5% for a conventional mortgage in some cases.
Housing prices in Tulsa have been going up, as have Oklahoma City's. They're still pretty low over all. Rest of the state has been flat or declining, though the smaller towns around Tulsa and OKC are big-time bedroom communities now.

A real economic downturn, or not so much?
I don't think I've seen much of an impact here in Seattle or personally.
Food prices are up indeed. A week's groceries used to be $90. Now it's $120. And we've adjusted -- less meat, more pasta.
Gas prices increases here have slowed. If we had a longer commute I think we'd feel the pain, but I usually only need to gas up once a month as is. I'm considering whether to replace my car or whether I should even replace it and go to an all bus commute.... [more]

I want to argue that rent is rising because there are fewer available units, not because of demand, but but because so many units have been converted to condos and now sit unsold and unoccupied. Same with rental houses, many of which were recently put on the market and now also sit unoccupied.
In Seattle, all the above is true, but there's an added factor of Seattle still being a place for younger people want to move to, so there's still demand for... [more]

In some parts of the western US, people are hoarding rice and stores are limiting how much customers can buy.
This has been overblown. It's Costco and Sam's that have put the limits on purchases, and it was mostly due to hoarding by a small group. Smaller stores and Asian food stores have reported no real issues.
Most of the supply problems have been with imports, e.g. basmati and jasmine rice, since the export market is getting curbed by government restrictions.

You're going through northern Kansas and southeastern Colorado? That's some boring country. The Four Corners is, well, this marker. And then you're off into Utah.
If it were me, I'd do some research and drive some of the old Route 66 alignment. There's a huge tourist industry wrapped around it, and it's (mostly) tasteful. So much of it is going away now, though.

Children's Museum was fine. Came in and set up; they did the cleanup. Had an hour party and then loosed the kids upon the museum. The rooms have small fridges and busy boxes on the wall, so that kept a bunch of 3 and 4 year olds well entertained.
The one drawback -- it's in the Center House, and the Center House is a long way from any parking. So you're schlepping all that party stuff from the car with the kid, then schlepping it back at the end of it.

Nthing take your time on this. If you don't know what it is, then you're going to get taken.
The baseball memorabilia market is very cyclical. For example, baseball cards went through almost a "speculative bubble" in the 80s and 90s, only to see a drop in value in all but the rarest of the rare. However, other forms of memorabilia, especially the one-of-a-kind items -- signed contracts, letters, ephemera -- have held up pretty well.

Yup, Thermapen. But that means opening the oven and stabbing the meat repeatedly. If you're doing a roast, you want something like the Polder.

When I was a kid I wanted to take piano, so my mom a couple blocks to Saied and asked them where I could take lessons. They pointed her to a woman on the other side of Yale who taught. Perfect, because I could ride my bike there from the house. That was in 1980. I think, a generation on, Saied can still make recommendations.

Also, ATL is the main hub for the entire Southeast now that US Airways shifted most of its operations out of Charlotte. So, if you're flying to Birmingham or Nashville or Columbia, you're probably flying through ATL.

A lot of people underestimate how large North America is. On the train, you can get from Berlin to London in ten hours.
Well, European trains run much faster than Americans drive, so it's probably better to think in distance:

Well, just depends on what you order. There are a load of other non-sausage options, like sandwiches.

You could always park at the Northgate Park and Ride - an exit right off the freeway - and catch the 41 into town. It runs every 15 minutes or so and takes 17 minutes to get there. Parking is free, of course.
They do tow, though, and there's been occasional crime sprees there.
