Low light photo tips
Try a couple shoots with a tripod. I know they are big, scary, and slow at first, but be patient and you will start to make better pictures. You will be able to shoot at a lower ISO speed and choose whatever aperture you want (as long as you can get your subjects to be still). In the process of adjusting your tripod, you will begin to pay more attention to composition. You will also open the doors to countless experimental methods that simply aren't possible handheld.... roundtrip NC to WA by Train? how bad an idea?
Huh. I make this trip back and forth regularly, as my family is in Raleigh but I go to school near Seattle. When I think about doing it on trains, my thoughts quickly move to killing myself. It will not be fun. It will not be a good value. Buy airplane tickets.

making podcasts easier to hear with dynamic compression
It would probably help-- though the compressed tracks will sound worse in a quiet listening situation. And keep in mind that you'll be amplifying and re-encoding the mp3 artifacts, so save them at a higher bitrate if you can.
The free audio editing program Audacity has a built-in compressor. Try a ratio between 4:1 and 8:1. Set the threshold to a value about 6 dB under the peak values of the quietest voice. Keep the attack and decay on the short side. Start there... [more]

Not to mention the countless fonts, colors, indentations, and boxes in the article. And they're reminding us not to ignore typography? Isn't typography, like, the most important skill for a designer to master?

The successor to TimeCube?
My favorite part about this site (and others like it) is the detailed explanations of everyday events. Something about them makes me happy:
"My employer sent me into a store in a region where I don't usually travel. Guess what I found on the clearance rack? Frames for $1/each. And the receipt printed a $2 coupon off of my next $2 purchase. (I bought shampoo with that.) These frames are 4-inches high and 12-inches wide--very unusual. These are silver-color and... [more]

The Price of an 'e'
I have a last name that is virtually impossible for Americans to pronounce correctly on the first try. I have dealt with mispronunciations since I was a little kid, and they no longer bother me. I wouldn't change it, because my respect for my family heritage outweighs my desire for a simple name. A first name is different though... you have to hear people say it a lot more, and it often doesn't carry the same ancestral baggage. If it really bugs you, change it, but keep in mind the identity... [more]

Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?
Cookout season is upon us! Grill your chicken for a whole new world of flava. Charcoal imparts tons of flavor and tasty charred bits. Propane is a good substitute.
Marinate your chicken overnight. It's easy and will soak all the way through the meat. Instead of a recipe, here's some basics for a good BBQ marinade:
It should consist of roughly equal amounts acid and oil. Acid is essential to a marinade; it penetrates muscle fibers and... [more]

Photo of the Rising Sun.
What Knave said, and I'll add that it's exacerbated by the sodium-vapor light source. That type of streetlamp puts out a single wavelength of light, so it makes the effect more dramatic. If it were the sun, the different wavelengths that compose full-spectrum light would diffract at different angles, and you would end up with a softer flare shape.

Most economical way to make your house smell good?
I got some incense from an Asian supermarket. 400 sticks for $1.25! It is distinct from head-shop incense, and I have been complimented on the smell. You may or may not have an issue with the hippie connotations.

Oh no! Not butternut squash risotto again.
Channa Masala. Cheap, delicous, you can make a lot at once, and it makes great leftovers. Plus it gives you that health-power! feeling.
Cook soul food, just without the usual pork element. Cornbread takes about 10 minutes to mix up the batter, and 25 to cook. Steam some collard greens, heat up a can of black eyed peas. Throw some sliced up sweet potatoes with herbs and butter in the oven; might as well. Instant grits, surprisingly good for a 1-minute... [more]

Healthy chips and dip?
Hummus has some (healthy) fats from olive oil, but also much protein. You can make it yourself if you have a food processor. PM me for a recipe; it's time consuming but easy. I am of the opinion that good hummus is a gift from God.
The proper dipping vehicle is pita bread. Grocery stores will rip you off on pita, but you may be able to find a middle eastern market or restaurant and get a good deal. If you want that chip-like crunch, you can toast them. This place... [more]

Lights on in the Darkroom
I really like these. I work for the photo center at my college. Our darkroom is well equipped and pristine, so it's cool to see someone's grimy basement darkroom with all the quirks.
Surprisingly, almost all of the photo students still use film. We have an amazing digital setup with great scanners, beautiful monitors, and epson 9800 printers, but something draws students to the wet darkroom anyway. Maybe it's our old-school faculty. I'm learning how to print color... [more]

man, what a loss. Pimp C was an artist, not some fake record company persona. He was multitalented-- like he said in "Life Is 2009", he could write your rhymes, sing your hook, and make you a beat. UGK were just now getting their due after 10+ years in the rap game. He should have been around for many more albums.
Bun B is going to record something amazing to honor him, I can tell you that.

You gotta make the tea extra sweet and extra strong. That way, once all the ice cubes melt in the hot hot sun, it will be perfect.
Sweet tea is the perfect drink for the south- the sugar gives you energy, the ice keeps you from overheating, and the caffeine makes you sharp.

How to get the most mpg out of a 5-speed?
Driving manual is great. You'll be bored with automatics once you start. I think there's some common mental ground amongst manual drivers-- we like to be in control, efficient, and effective. I'm not sure about the chick diggage factor, but I know that any stick shifter will respect another stick shifter a little more because of it. Plus, one day you may have to drive someone else's manual-transmission car in an emergency.
As far as MPG: work with the road. Use... [more]

The large center square appears to be either raised or recessed... if it is, then there would be some kind of noticable beveled edge running through the three smaller squares and their dials. They appear to be floating.
