I'm trying to find information on a physics seminar/lecture/colloquium series that was a tradition at a certain school where the colloquium was always given by a member of the faculty whose name was drawn out of a hat before the start of the talk.

I am currently a visiting professor at a liberal arts college. Our department is conducting a search for a tenure track position which I intend to apply for. I need letters of recommendation which address my teaching abilities. The people most qualified to write these letters are my colleagues that are on the search committee. Is it appropriate or inappropriate to ask them to write letters of recommendation for this position?

Does anyone know of a passenger ferry service which leaves from Chicago and goes on Lake Michigan to ANYWHERE? I'm looking to get away for a weekend to somewhere in maybe Wisconsin or Michigan (think Door County or Mackinac Island) and would like to not have to drive much, if possible. I thought it would be fun to take a boat ride to my destination starting from the lake in Chicago, but so far have not found anything online. Chicagoans, let me in on your secrets!

My wife and I may be relocating to the Orlando area so that I can start a new job. She currently has a great job (start of long career) as a system analyst at a top-notch company. She earns more money than I do, and probably always will. This year she gets 4 weeks of vacation. She is concerned that if we move to Orlando she will not find a job she likes for the same pay and with the same benefits (e.g. vacation). I had been told (once upon a time) that if you move to another company, you move up in pay, not down. What is the more likely scenario?

Either I'm way too sensitive to the phenomenon of having an oncoming car's brights flashed at me, or it actually is happening too often to me. So, my question is: who out there is flashing their brights at other cars and why?

A few years ago I recall reading a website where lyrics to several popular rap and hip hop tunes were posted with a line by line translation of the slang terms. It also had annotations of some of the more obscure culture references that were in the lyrics. I have searched on Google to no avail. Anyone know what I'm talking about or have seen something similar?

I have been hired to layout a newsletter for print and for publication online. There is an editor who compiles the articles, edits for length, and etc. In this situation, who should be responsible for the copy editor duties? I find that it is a pain to finish the layout and then hear back from the editor that there are several spelling, punctuation, and line break mistakes that need to be corrected (which is generally hard to do in DTP software). Is it unreasonable of me to expect that the copy-editing should be done by the editor and not the layout person?

Is there a way to sort del.icio.us links by order of overall popularity? For example, I know if I go to
del.icio.us/popular/css/ it will show me recently popular links with the css tag, but what I'd really like is to sort
all the css links in descending order of number of people linking to the link. Is this possible?
I googled with variations of "sort|order popular del.icio.us links" but did not come up with anything remotely like what I was going for.
