The dear green place anyone?

I can't do this weekend, but I can do next weekend, definitely, barring anything extremely important that I've totally forgotten about. Friday or Saturday (15th or 16th) would do me fine. In terms of where – I'm hardly in Edinburgh at all, but how about the bar in the Cameo?
Oh, and By The Grace Of God – are you a Dundonian native, or a transplant? Only I was efter a nice peh, not to metion a few words with jenleigh ...

if they still sell horrible tall cans of nasty cheap Tennant's Lager with the boobie-girls pictures on the back
As jack_mo says, sadly not. But the Scottish Brewing Archive, part of the University of Glasgow's Archive collections* has a whole bunch of them – I went there to photograph them for the magazine I used to work for a few years ago. If I find the pics, I'll print them out and roll them up to make new fake Tennents cans for us to... [more]

I have seen exactly zero Fringe stuff. I spent oh, about eight or nine years reviewing awful comedy and theatre at the Fringe; not reviewing any of it this year has been absolutely great. (Though I hear Jane Bussmann is very good)

The First Annual Metafilter Edinburgh Festival...
I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I'm about in Edinburgh three or four days a week at the moment, as is Jack, and there's always time to kill between reviewing one godawful comedy fringe show and the next. Should we do it some time next week?

Next Sunday would suit me fine. Where do we want to have it? I'm partial to the Villager on George IV Bridge* because it's central, it's nice and it's not full of tourist twats. Although I am open to suggestions from those who actually live in Edinburgh, because they know the place far better than I do. Or: if we want that true Edinburgh radge feel, I suppose we could have it in the Penny Black. At eight in the morning. Or the Phoenix (if it still exists; it's years since I've been in there ...)

Jack: The Villager is the pub you, I, Elanor and Nadine spent a refreshing afternoon in, so essentially, yes.
If everybody's up for it, I say aye. We can introduce any non-Scot MeFites to the delights of the 'Burg, and the rest of us can soak up the atmosphere.

Maybe Len could blag us in to a gig, though?
Well, I just had a look at the T on the Fringe line up, and the only gig on the 20th is godawful fake indie pricks The Automatic, and I'd rather boil my cock in gravy than go see them ;)
Actually, hang on – just checked another listings site, and the rather ace 1990s are on at Cabaret Voltaire on the 20th. I should be able to blag at least a couple of tickets (maybe more; depends how... [more]

Fuck. on further inspection, it looks like the 1990s have cancelled and it's the decidedly less ace Flying Matchstick Men playing instead. An I'd rather go and see The Automatic than see them.

Marquis – why the 1990s hatred? (I'm genuinely interested; wasn't aware that they could inspire actual loathing ...)

Actually, there's a bug I noticed earlier on today with favourites that could do with being fixed: when you click on a "X people have marked this as a favourite comment" link in a thread, the link to return to the post on the resulting page doesn't take you back to the post; it takes the last bit of the comment URL as the last piece of the thread URL (example; I clicked to see who marked this comment as a favourite and the Return to Post link pointed to http://www.metafilter.... I'm not so fussed about fonts. But can we please, please, please not use the term "OP"? I've no idea why this neologism bugs me more than all the others that get flung about, but it does. Is it really so much effort to type those extra letters?

You understand the abbreviation, so it's not causing confusion, and you can't even articulate why it bothers you. And the rest of us should change our behavior...why?
Point taken; though I meant I'm not sure why it bothers me more than other neologisms. The reason all of them bother me is maybe just being cranky about violence done to language for the sake of abbreviation and expediency. Maybe that's being stuffy and prissy about it,... [more]

In AskMe in particular: Because the OP is often cited to distinguish a response that is an attempt to answer the original question vs. responses which are comments in an ensuing derail-y (or just evolved) discussion.
Did you not read what jack_mo said? It's like Highlander, but without Queen on the soundtrack and Sean Connery spouting cod-philosophical nonsense: There can be only one. And anyway, what's wrong with using the person's name to distinguish... [more]

cribcage, you've got your analogy arse about face. Europeans pointing out that not all of us read the NYTimes (I do sometimes; not always) isn't the same as you pointing out the obscurity or otherwise of Le Monde, but if all the British people on MeFi started whining about how "[story x] was on the front page of bccnews.com/ The Guardian / The Times, so why are you bothering, because we've all read this?" then you'd have a point.

Hahaha. That were fun. I'm now regretting deciding to head home from the Art School at 2, instead of hanging around for further debaucheries. Incidentally, I just met said pharmacopeia-equipped hairdresser down at Optimo. And he said: "too much of that music which sounds like records skipping, and not enough Kylie."
So when's the next meetup?

Is that some kind of euphemism that I would rather not know the real meaning of?
Being biased in these matters, I'd obviously like to meet in Glasgow, but I'm willing to cross over to the evil east. Maybe we could all meet on Magdalen Green, and eat an ingin peh, as a tribute to current MeTa controversies; if not, I'm more than happy to hit the capital, so long as nobody makes me go anywhere near the Royal Mile ...

So, to summarise: editing Washington Post articles is okay [I think we all agree on that]. But complaining about deliberately lying about editing Washington Post articles is just partisan bitching. Jesus. No wonder your media, and your country, is so fucked.*
