MeTa post: MetaFilter: It is what it is
*stands up, clears throat*

Man, FARK is always taking it in the dumper around here. I'll say it: I check out FARK pretty much daily. Sometimes they have good links. Sometimes they're shit. Just like some other site whose name eludes me right now. (I generally don't bother with reading comments, as they don't do "discussion" well there, which is what I think most people here get shirty about occasionally, which is fine. Though I will occasionally check... [more]

Huh, whenever I think about the word 'void'

For me:

Lloyd, Lloyd, all null and void,
Looking for the truth but trying to avoid, Lloyd
Dissed in the Malibu, not sure what to do

Every damn time.

I came to this thread wondering who Mark Askee was and what we had asked him.

MeTa post: AskMe != AskToBeJudged
I'm probably a bad person, but the original question just seemed like another fine entry in what I like to think of as AskMe performance art. Anonymous poster creates absurd question framed with the most ludicrous possible circumstances; madness ensues. Whee!

I think that we can all agree that only ADHD-afflicted debt-ridden single-mom stripper-lawyers are the only people who get to say anything in that thread, or this one, or, frankly, anywhere.

I don't quite get what's going on here but we haven't warned stinkycheese about anything.

Which makes languagehat's assertions in the thread rather puzzling. I'm not interested in going to bat for stinkycheese (there's a sentence I didn't anticipate ever typing), but allegations of "obscene, threatening, borderline psychotic" behavior are pretty strong, particularly when the Jess/Matt/Cortex are cited as being aware of and interceding against them.

MeTa post: This is chatfilter, AMIRITE folks?
No, I guess not, but it's tiresome. It's dull, it's overwritten, and best of all, it's homeworkfilter. As an added bonus, you've got the whole "we're not really talking about genuine misogyny if we all agree ahead of time to pretend to be clinical about it re: popular culture" thing going on.

I don't know the poster at all, and it's obviously come up before, but . . . ecchh.

MeTa post: Lets not derail obit threads
Nah, he isn't funny because he died of cancer that he got from smoking cigarettes (products he had no genuine use for,) that were marketed to him, and that he bought and used and defended as some kind of icnoclastic "stick-it-to-the-man" gesture of defiance and free thought.

That's interesting. Could you please provide me with some cites showing when they linked pancreatic cancer to smoking?

I'm a little cranky... [more]

Yeah, but some genius is going to go find the links showing the increased risk factor that smokers have for pancreatic cancer and thusly "prove" that it was the evil cigs the whole time. It drives me insane.

God, I want a cigarette.

Yes, well, we are pretty fucking amazing.

Did you bother to read any of the many, many well-linked posts that document the fairly awesome swath this person has cut across the 'net in her very purple travels? I don't have any sense at all as you apparently do that this is anything close to a "real" person, much... [more]

I didn't really dig into either of these, nor did I pin them on one or the other of the two folks involved, but there are at least analyzable artifacts like that.

Relatedly, cortex, all artefacts are palimpsests with infinite layers. Here, settle down--you comfy?--I have a lot of theories on this, and I want to bounce some of them off of you . . .

. . . our greatest defining tool. Yet, the metaphors we evolve to expand the potential of language can themselves only be made to refer back to the language which created them. An infinite loop emerges in most definition.

Cortex? Hey, buddy, stay with me! You looked like you were nodding off for a second.

Anyway, as new technology emerges we use it to 'add' meaning to artifacts which are already partly defined. By looking at the world with ever... [more]

. . . In a sense, I use the word definition as it is used to describe digital photography, i.e. the greater the pixel count the higher the definition. TRUE, PERFECT definition in this sense, can be understood as a digital image with an infinite number of pixels. The only model than can describe the world is the world itself.

I want to uncover the fractal-like capacity of language, metaphor and definition, most specifically in the archaeological examination of texts,... [more]

. . . the thing defined changes in its relationship to the world, I do believe that there is a contradiction in what you have said, Cortex. When the relationship something has with the world shifts we are left with at least two levels of definition, the original and the new. The new definition is not removed completely from the old, the new contains the old within it. To truly understand the Morning and the Evening star, in all its glorious philosophical history, we need to . . .

My favorite--by which I mean "most confusing"-- example of Colin Farrell's acting "business" is at the very end of this clip from Minority Report. To express his displeasure that Tom Cruise is getting away from him, he grits his teeth and punches his own palm. I always like to imagine that he got the idea for doing this by imagining what Mimi Rogers or Nicole Kidman would do in the scene.

Mine does not have an associated full phrase. When I used to play trivia on AOL (I know), BARL was my nonsense acronym that I made up solely so the LOLers and ROFLers would ask me "What does BARL mean?" I would either say nothing or respond something like "I can't believe you don't know that."

AND NOW YOU KNOW . . . the rest of the boring story.
