Oscar Night In Hollywood
"If we can huckster a President into the White House, why cannot we huckster the agonized Miss Joan Crawford or the hard and beautiful Miss Olivia de Havilland into possession of one of those golden statuettes which express the motion picture industry's frantic desire to kiss itself on the back of its neck?"
The Atlantic reprints an indispensible Raymond Chandler article from 1948.

Cruelty.
(.swf file) Via the NYT Review of Books. Felix Jung hijacks your cursor (briefly) for a poetry break.

102 Beats.
For its third anniversary,
Freaky Trigger is trying out a neat project: You write exactly 102 words about a bit of music. Then someone else will do the same. More inside.

Ouchy the Clown!
He's a disc jockey! And a meeting facilitator! And . . . eh . . . a pro-dom! Did I mention that he's a clown? Terrifying, yet mesmerizing. WARNING: go deep enough into it and you'll see nudies. (Via

Does This Website Make Me Look Fat?
Tired of websites that showcase weird kinks and fetishes? Me neither. This fellow enjoys photoshopping female celebrities so that they look fat. Ooookay. (Everything I saw was OK for work, but beware irritating Angelfire popups.)

Mathematician Bums Out Entire Scientific Community
His "Omega" number--infinite and incalculable--guts hopes for pure mathematics, physicists' hopes for a Theory of Everything, and is just in general kind of bafflingly cool. Builds on the whole Godel/Turing foundation of hopelessness!

Gentle, Strong Woman Seeks Doormat
Read about Mary, who is looking for that special somebody who can fulfill all of her needs and then some. ALL of them. Example of phone etiquette:
"I have a personal preference for not being interrupted while I'm talking. So please don't step on my words. Although I appreciate the sincere intentions of listeners who are used to interjecting verbal nods such as "uh huh," "hmm hmm," or "OK" when the speaker pauses briefly between statements, please don't do so with me. I'd rather you listen silently so that I can know that you have the best chance of hearing every word that I say. Don't worry, I won't be longwinded. ;-)" Riiiight.

Wrongwaycomeback?
Is Wetlog really going away? Neale has been a prankster in the past, but with his recent re-styling as a memory bank and the tone of the message, I worry about one of my favorite blogs. Someone say it ain't so.

They're Not Playing Your Song.
This is just mean. Mean, cruel, and awful. Heartless. And, I'm sorry, very funny. I laughed and laughed. I know, I'm a bad person. Are you too?

Sonic Death Monkey!
Somebody obviously is a fan of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity," and has either invented a one-man band or invented a website for a one-man band. This site is worth it for the pictures alone, although the half-mad text ain't bad either.

The Privacy Space
In every MeFi thread about personal privacy in the digital age, the comment inevitably arises: "You already have zero privacy. Get over it." The article even quotes it. But someone else in the article says, "The idea that technology and privacy are intrinsically opposed is false." Great article (from a non-techie standpoint) on the coming promises of privacy tech.

She Hates Music.
All music. A cranky Brit named Tanya Headon (hey, I dunno) frags everything you might like (well, mostly rock). Professional crank or insightful satirist?

Sunlight: It's What's For Dinner.
This guy claims he's been living on nothing but water and
sunlight for about a year. :::Cough::: He also exhumes the hoary myth about using only 10% of your brain. My favorite is the author credit: "By A Staff Reporter."

So the election is over and you're sad. Right? Right? Er, well, anyway, check out this hilarious (and as-yet-unfinished) online comic featuring the guy we all secretly wanted to vote for. If we didn't already. (Features naughty words at times.)

What a delicious fedora
you're wearing! I guess I'm adding to my growing body of stupid, inconsequential links, but hey, everyone needs a niche.

CAUTION: VERY NAUGHTY WORD AHEAD
(Via Obscure Store) You can't say I didn't warn you. This is perhaps the funniest "news" story I've read all year. I have to believe the (female) reporter was cackling madly as she wrote it.

A Chronovore
is what this site is. Don't freak out as it takes over your browser for a second, but if you're easily spooked, a little square in the upper right will resize the image. I only say that because I'm a jumpy little man myself.
