Then She Begins ...
edlundart: A fair part of that could be the electric ukulele. I haven't much experience with amps and pedals and such, and it has a limited range, so it generally ends up sounding kinda lo-fi by default whenever I use it. It sounds much better when soloing as opposed to playing rhythm. Also, I'm sure the hum from the motor on the reed organ doesn't help, either.
arcanecrowbar, after a few listens through the finished product, I, too, though it could use a little more... [more]

micayetoca: This was all just me. I did the multitracking with Cubase, starting with the drums, but I wasn't working off a click track or anything, so the rhythm in the first part is a little shaky. We've got those going through a PreSonus Firestudio. From there, I recorded three tracks of ukulele, then the five vocal tracks on the chorus. After that came the bass, three tracks of electric ukulele (because the thing sounds so damned tinny), the toy piano, then the reed organ. Then, I... [more]

Well, for the first part, I was just trying to keep in mind that whatever I did, I did it four times. I'm used to that, so it's not too hard for me. For the second part, yeah, I was pretty much playing along to the tune in my head. As for counting bars, I don't really, I've just been getting pretty good at feeling out when I've done something either twice or four times (to be honest, other numbers of repetitions get pretty difficult for me to keep track of).

What influenced your musical taste most... radio, tv, film or literature?
I'd have to say that some combination of all four of those affected my musical tastes, though radio and literature both a bit less than the others. More specifically, the Muppets had a huge impact on me while growing up. Colourful, humorous, inoffensive, often bizarre, occasionally avant garde, they strongly influenced my taste in ... well ... most everything, really. As did Gilbert and Sullivan operettas with which, while not sure which of those four categories they fall under, I have always... [more]

Reveal your secrets
My secret is booze.
Aside from that, most of the stuff I play without drums is done to a click track for the first track I lay down (usually the uke). After that I base the rhythm of the rest of the tracks on that one, including any sort of rhythm instruments I play afterwards (like the egg or beatboxing or whatever). Otherwise, I record the drums first, without worrying about a click track at all.

Where does everyone play?
The band for which I play drums has gigged a few times. It's been alright, though we're having trouble getting any sort of following. At least, any sort of following that isn't really creepy. So, most of our shows are pretty dead, which is, for the most part, fine by us.
We played an event at a Chuck-E-Cheese type kids venue once for some festival they were having. That was traumatizing. We had to change the lyrics to most of our songs, since, in general, we're... [more]

The Bitter with the Suite
I, too, am quite fond of the fact that the folks in the music section are all very polite, helpful, and supportive. I'm not quite sure if there's anything I dislike about it ... maybe it could get more love from the rest of MeFi, but that's about it.

Colonel Roger (is a Soldier from the Future (is a Cover))
Drat! 15 minutes late. Oh, well. I tried.
Also, just after uploading the song, my internet connection went down. I stepped outside for a cigarette, ended up in a discussion with my neighbor across the street, and headed over there for a little while. Both his cable and internet services were also not working. Therefore, I concluded that this song had broken the internet.
That's what I like to think, anyway.

Wow. That brings me back.
And, no, I never had a Genesis.
I played Columns the real way ... on a Sega Master System.

Karlos, Columns is a similar sort of game, so the feeling is appropriate.

Ha! I wish it was anvil. But then the whole song would probably have to be about something else. Like online remote blacksmithing or something.

I'm sure the Great Big Mulp is blastin' it through giant speakers in the main square of his home town, playing it over and over.
I would but Providence's main square is a sketchy place.
So I just blast it at work, instead.

Flyball's Lament (the better one)
Damn. Thanks for all the compliments on the drumming! I feel really self-conscious about them, 'cause there are some mistakes, and, because I had to record them first, else the drum mics would pick up anything else playing, I didn't realise until later that I'd switched into a different time signature for the chorus.
I don't know this Polyphonic Spree, but I suppose I should look them up, yes? And I didn't really do much mixing, aside from levels, with the vocal mics.... [more]

There also seems to be a certain amount of arrogance in the angst. Well, I suppose that's who I was, to some degree. Thank goodness we're all ever-changing.

i love the warbly synth noise.
And that's the uke, with some distortion and a wah.
Well, alright, I'll try the not doubling my voice with the next song I make. I don't know why I like it so much, I've just been doing it for a while, I guess. Next time, just one of me per melody/harmony/whatever.

The mic? Well ... it's a crappy little $5 computer mic. I have access to a whole slew of better ones down at my band's practice space, but, sometimes, going there to write a song puts too much pressure on me. Somehow it's easier just to slap something together at home.
