MeFi post: Make-Believe Maverick
McCain Plans Fiercer Strategy Against Obama

Alternate headline: When the going gets tough, the tough go negative.

From homunculus' second link:

“If we can be that beacon of light and hope for others who seek freedom and democracy and can live in a country that would allow intolerance in the equal rights that again our military men and women fight for and die for for all of us. "

She's not even trying to make sense with her buzz words.

And as far as her purposely misconstruing what was in the NYT article, at the risk of sounding like an elitist, I have to ask just how many people who turned out at that airport hangar in Englewood Colorado actually read the NYT article to realize that she was less than truthful about what it said.

Character does matter.

A friend of mine in Denmark just sent me this. (It's in Norwegian but the English translation is here.)

It's just a moment in time and really not a big deal but I think that Obama acting as the Good Samaritan does speak about his character.

I've thought long and hard about Sarah Palin and her religious ilk and have come to the conclusion that the Obama/Biden ticket is much... [more]

I was amazed at the ad "Mum" that was linked to in homunculus' Salon piece. They talk about greedy CEOs and have a picture of a black guy. Like most CEOs are black?

WTF?

MeFi post: Sarah Palin may be a better debater than you think
I want to know what is going on behind the scenes at the McCain-Palin ticket.

Well, when asked if he had taken advice from Palin about foreign affairs, McCain replied that he'd asked for her advice plenty of times. It wasn't about foreign affairs, though; he'd merely asked which tie went better with his suit. And there was a little bit of a tiff when he was readying for the Katie Couric interview that he'd blown off Letterman for and she yelled at... [more]

"The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed because no matter what you say you're gonna get clobbered," she said.

Asked by Couric to name the periodicals she reads, Palin repeatedly declined. She also would not name any Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, other than the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

Do people actually believe this crap? "Of course I know all the answers but I wasn't... [more]

Well, thanks a lot, Secret Life of Gravy. I have to fix supper and won't be able to do that now because I will be obsessively hanging out here waiting for IRS dirt to filter down. You betcha I'm gonna have an unhappy family over this.

So Todd uses their home as his office and Sarah uses the governor's office as a residence and they all get per diem whenever any of them visits their home which is actually Todd's office?

We need government to just get out of our way and not go taxin' Hockey Moms and Joe 6-Pack when all they want to do is travel with their family to see the greatest country on the face of the goldarned earth. MeFi post: Sarah Palin's Poujadist Agenda
She's the kind of woman a man's glad to go to bed with at night after a couple of beers, but man, you don't wanna wake up the next morning and find out she's the Vice President.

All I can say is that it's shitty enough that you've called EmpressCallipygos' mom dumb, but this is just a little over the top to say about someone's mom.

So why did these seven employees change their minds about the subpoenas?

...a grass roots group spontaneously emerged, calling themselves Alaskans for Truth.

This group, organized a rally in part to demand the resignation of Talis Colberg for telling state employees that they didn’t need to comply with legislative subpoenas issued as part of the ethics investigation that has become known as “Troopergate.” This smacked a little too much

*Other than when they are being used as props.

Sure, the Republican candidate for Washington governor isn't running as a "Republican" but as "GOP". He is, however, supporting the same old same old as George Bush did and he's wildly popular in the Eastern part of the state, isn't he, Tenuki? How dumb is that?

Nobody thinks that, Miko--or at least they didn't until the McCain group came out with that ad "The One" and people picked up on that meme.

That ad wasn't just aimed at the people who look forward to Armagoeddon; it was also aimed at people who felt "uncomfortable" with Obama and didn't want people to think that the only reason they have this vague discomfort is that he is black.

It seems to me that the McCain camp would very much like a do-over on the VP selection, but they know that if they dump Palin now it will definitely be over.

Maybe. But she could step aside and claim that she's expecting another blessed event and that the duties of VP (whatever those might be) are just too much for her in her delicate state. The religious right could expound on how wonderful that is, McCain could wish her the best, and then we... [more]

I don't think Obama has the inner fortitude to back up his words with tough action when necessary.

And you base this on what, exactly? Did the witches you have tea with devine this through the entrails of chickens or is it your own gut feeling you're going with?

Just something really, really bad, okay? She just wants to find out some bombshell that is so horrendously awful that he will have to slink away forever and the Good People of South Carolina will never have to think of him again. Is that so much to ask???

Palin has spent her entire adult life immersed in this apocalyptic hysteria. Ask yourself: Is it a good idea to place the most powerful military on earth at her disposal?

Actually, I'd go a step further and say that anyone who uses the word, "smite" either in a non-ironic way or when not directly quoting some Old Testament passage should not be allowed anywhere near a foreign policy decision-making position.

How can you possibly have a rational dialogue with someone who deals in absolutes like that? Reasoned discourse requires the ability to see nuances and shades of gray in every situation...

You can't. Witness the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Pressed on why her state's proximity to Russia enhanced her foreign policy experience, Ms. Palin said: "Well, it certainly does, because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of." If you feel the need to feel sorry for Sarah Palin, feel sorry for her when she returns to Alaska. I suspect that she will be a one term governor after this and with any amount of luck she will sink into obscurity knitting booties for the grandkids.

"Box of rocks" is a bit more poetic (cuz it like, rhymes?) so that's a backhanded way of not only calling her stupid but also doing it in an elitist way. Which will totally piss her off.

She does well when she's working from a script--she was really, really effective at the RNC. It's when people are asking the tough questions (like when Katie Couric asked her what she meant when she had talked about her experience in foreign affairs because of Russia's proximity) that she folds.

Having said that, no one has ever gone wrong by overestimating the strengths of one's rivals.

Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

This is a statement from a desperate campaign.

MeFi post: Bottoms up
I listened to the debate on NPR and I'll have to say that as far as delivery goes, McCain had it all over Obama.

As far as saying things that weren't based in fact, McCain was ahead on that, too.

Unfortunately, Joe Sixpack probably doesn't know that part of it and the media he utilizes won't point it out.

Obama has got to do a whole lot better in the next debate is all I have to say.

Oh oh oh, I misunderstood - I thought this was something about how the two GOP candidates were not supposed to interact. I had read about the debate negotiations. I thought this was a new story that they were actually trying to keep McCain and Palin apart, to protect him.

They're allowed to interact but McCain is not allowed to comment on how much makeup she wears or to call her a c*nt.
