Ehh. Practically all artwork copies or outright steals to some extent; Picasso famously condoned it, and Shakespeare was notorious for it. Van Dijk's picture is good in a completely different way than the original photograph is, and in this day and age I don't see anything inherently more corrupt about massaging in a... [more]

Dersins: This word you keep using, I do not think it means what you think it means.
I don't want to speak for Zachsmind, but I think it's quite possible for someone to be intellectually/politically convinced that it isn't right to discriminate against LGBT people, while still getting freaked out/made uncomfortable by the thought of hot steamy homosmexings.... [more]

Buzz reloaded
Ahhh, heh... man, I used to play around with Buzz all the time. I found the visual layout of the machines page, where you can move them around and link them up in endless combinations, really helped create interesting sounds and feedback loops and such. After a while I tried FruityLoops and a couple of others but although they had a lot more features and you didn't have to program anything with hexy-codes, somehow it just wasn't as fun to mess around with. I'll definitely be watching this with... [more]

Tiered internet use
Yeah, I think someone must have got their articles mixed up at some point. The majority of ISPs, here in the UK at least, currently offer some kind of deal where you accept a monthly cap, and pay less in return; I can only presume it's the same in many other countries too. For casual "check email and the dailies" use, it's never really noticed - end of the internet this ain't.
Rather more worrying for the future of the net is the precedent set by Virgin Media... [more]

A 5 gb monthly cap works out too about 2,041 bytes per second. Barely faster then a 14.4 baud modem (unless I made an order of magnitude mistake somewhere).
I don't think you did, but that would only apply to someone who was using the net every second of every day. 5GB a month is about 170MB a day, or about 240MB a day if you take a couple of days off per week. That's plenty for the average email-checking, MSN-browsing parent.

Detaining people without trial for any length of time is a shameful and uncivilised practice no matter how many people it's done to, but the scale of this is especially horrific if it's even within several orders of magnitude of that 26,000 figure. Hopefully the US will soon have a sane leader who'll pull the curtain back and expose this kind of abuse -- enough that the public will no longer be able to wilfully ignore it, and other nations (including mine) will no longer be able to support and... Although a Tory win is probably pretty inevitable, I think the Libs could find themselves in a much stronger position, at least relative to Labour, after the dust has settled.

Firstly, even if it is on novelty value alone I don't think that would mean people were "not actually" enjoying it. If the content itself was unremarkable and it was just a technical excercise, it would still be a valid and impressive piece of work.
But secondly, why would a novel technique... [more]

I don't know, if he'd done that I think it would have looked more like it was just CGI or projection or superimposition or something. The fact that each shot is done manually makes it clearer how the motion/animation is arising out of a long and repeated public act, which gets integrated into the piece itself. I like... [more]

Although, like any one person's experience, it's drowned in the sea of tragedy that is a world war, I can imagine how the guilt must have been heart-wrenching for Rippert.
