Ask post: Funes the Memorious
Clarification: When I said "Is this true?" I wasn't quoting Umberto Eco. I was questioning the idea of information being lost because it isn't regarded as important 'at the time'. The Calpurnia thing still carries (as an example).
posted to Ask Metafilter by tellurian at 8:26 AM on June 28, 2008
Calpurnia in her irrelevance, I mean.
posted to Ask Metafilter by tellurian at 8:29 AM on June 28, 2008
Despite the 'magisterial takedown of Eco's pretensions to erudition' being a great read (thank you) is Calpurnia's fate unresolved? I'm disappointed that there are no scholars researching.

Ask post: Why are pirates allowed to eat oysters all year round?
If you really want to get the full story, you should read the wonderful "The Big Oyster" by Mark Kurlansky (transcribing errors, my own).p 79 "In the fall, the oysters would be pickled and shipped out. Although New Yorkers ate oysters all year long, it was believed that the oyster in the months without R – May, June July, and August – were of inferior quality and so they waited for the better oysters to come in the fall. This is an ancient and somewhat... [more]

No, you're not the only one that has noticed.

My mom and probably your mom too wears the same hairstyle today as she did when she was a high school senior.
Maybe your mother, but mine certainly doesn't. I suspect many others don't either.
TEST: Drag out high school photos and look at reactions about how they dressed and their hairstyles. My bet is that it would be all 'OMG, I can't believe I had that hairstyle/wore those clothes'.
Why change if it works? FASHION.

Ask post: Rubbing hands together
rubbing hands together used to be a sign of deference
Wouldn't that be the wringing of hands, not rubbing the palms against each other?

Convoluted with keeping your hands warm, I've found this discussion. Looks like it's not universal. The Alexander the Great angle is interesting.

Ask post: Quick! I need a Quickbooks Wizard!
Put it in 'miscellaneous income'.
Later, reconcile it as a 'credit' on a future invoice. [The 'help' menu will step you through this].
If a future invoice is either unlikely or doesn't occur, issue a cheque back to them (preferred in my book, credits are so ephemeral).
My account keeping is so much better than anyone else's - [not trying to big note myself here but…] - I say this because I have had to correct clients and suppliers accounts occasionally,... [more]

Ask post: Software/instructions to make a photo/music slideshow?
How can I change the interval for this set (all at once) in iMovie?
You can set the timing of each set of pictures as you import them using the slider - see below*.
You can also adjust the timings after the pictures are imported:
1. 'Shift' (if they are all together) or 'Command' (if they are scattered throughout the show) 'Select' them.
2. In the top right hand (where you see the preview) use the hare and tortoise slider to... [more]

Whoa! Yes, that's a really different view. I'm at home right now but when I get back to work tomorrow we need to compare iMovie versions. I suspect I'm in the 'easy to to use early version' that doesn't have a ton of features but it's what I'm familiar with and use. Sorry for the misdirection if that's the case.
I do see that you have non-contiguous shots elected though. What's available under the 'Edit' when you do that?

Heh! As an aside. Is that a Pamplona... [more]

Not so jcdill. I took time and effort to help you. It seems there is a reduced feature set in your version of iMovie. So I suggest you investigate this option and quit your whining.

Ask post: What should I know about living with someone from Japan?
I have had many Japanese roomates live with me over several years. They have had varying levels of English. In all cases it has been an absolute delight. Take your time to speak slowly and clearly and your communication will be reasonably trouble free. All of my roomates have had pocket translators and I'd be surprised if your candidate doesn't too. One area where you'll be able to share and communicate is in the kitchen. Food cuts across all barriers. Explore and embrace your differences,... [more]

Another Moosewood fan here. The 'Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant' (also dog-eared) has a 'Hopping John' recipe that's dead simple and fast:
_________

Prepare brown rice.
Boil black-eyed peas/beans in salted water until just tender, strain (reserving juice).
Oil, Onions, Allspice, Paprika, Soy sauce blended over a low heat in a large frying pan (skillet).
Mix in cooked black-eyed peas and some of the reserved juice to taste.... [more]

Ask post: How do I figure out mortality statistics for people born in 1890?
On this page you'll find reports of mortality statistics by age. Note: 1917 weighs in at a hefty 72.8MB. All the age related tables (except for the one on page 11*) have this rider on them though: [This table excludes the deaths of soldiers and sailors after the United States entered the war.], so I don't know if it will suit your requirements.
*This table says - Death from all causes in the 25 to 29 years bracket was 41,732. Incidentally the deaths of... [more]

do you think the under 5's would be similar for 5's in 1895?
The next set of figures available on that site are for 1900:
Death from all causes in the 5 to 9 years bracket was 36,748
Death from all causes in the 10 to 14 years bracket was 24,500

Looking at the material behind her, there are two clues:
1) A flyer for DPG 2005, which places her in Seoul, Korea.
2) A poster for M/V (a Dutch television show). The poster also has a web address with the nl (Netherlands domain suffix), placing her in Holland.

Thank you for the PDF, pluckysparrow, it was an interesting read and yeah, 'way more complex' indeed. This caught my eye:"Although detailed historical information on changes in dress throughout the 19th century is not available, we do know that during the early 20th century urban Ayrnara women wore the so-called Panama hats, which were actually produced in Ecuador. These hats were subsequently replaced by the contemporary derbies sometime after World War II. The most fashionable... [more]

Ask post: I made a gun with leaves!
You can make a canon out of a palm tree."A canon like the ones used everywhere here during festivals and similar occasions. It consists of a coconut palm trunk which has been split open, hollowed out, put back together and bound up with wire. A small hole is bored at the bottom end and water and a few pieces of carbide are put into it. Once the gas has developed you put a piece of burning wood in the hole, and the canon goes off with a fearful noise.... [more]

No by jove, it is not a Manx cat. It is a normal cat that lost its tail when it was run over by the bloody five-fifteen train.

Ask post: Surfing Sydney
i may have to check out Tamarama
Not while the flags are up, boogie boards only (the beach is too small to accommodate swimmers and boards). That's why it's called Glamarama sometimes, it's a place for sunbathing, hanging out on the rocks and looking glamorous. Sometimes there's a short break at McKenzies (the next [very, very small] bay) or inbetween Tamarama and Bronte (which also has a good break). After hours you're sweet though. Okay, lets get this into some sort of perspective.
As an English immigrant, many years ago, I loved the idea of being able to surf. I read Tracks magazine [I'll be fucked if I link to an ninesmn site]; I was a Captain Goodvibes (snort) fan; I saw most of the surfing movies. I gave up learning to surf (at Bondi, even though I ended up living there twenty years) early on, because of the anger, antagonism, abuse and territorial... [more]
