Ask post: Determining salary and compensation requirements, prior to interview with new employer
If you're switching jobs, you want to make it worth while. I'd try get at least 15% to 20% more than he makes now, plus any adjustments for cost of living, etc, if you're moving.

As far as equity, it's hard to judge. If it's a publicly traded company, they're most likely talking about some number of stock options. For a senior lead / manager, grants on the order of 10,000 options are not unreasonable. If it's private, its more difficult because it's much harder to... [more]

Do their pets get free run of the White House?

I was wondering the same thing. Actually, I was wondering where the first dog poops. I mean, where does it poop? When my dog needs to poop, I let it out into the back yard, or take it down to the park (and yes, I pick it up with a biodegradable bag). Does the President just open the back door and let the dog do it's business in the Rose Garden?

Ask post: Here's your sign
Perhaps they genuinely feel that it does matter who wins and they do it because they love their country and want to make a difference.

I'm not sure about the national election, but I have noticed that in local elections, he with the most signs tends to win.

For what it's worth, I've never been swayed by such a sign because I vote permanent absentee and actually sit down and look at each candidates website and do some research before voting.... [more]

Ask post: Help me spend my company's money on me
Divide up the funds and give everyone $715. That would boost my moral. With such a diverse group of people you're going to end up doing some lowest common denominator type thing. I went to so many of these things, ranging from 20 people to 2000 people while I worked at MSFT and in every single case I can say, positively, that I would rather have just had my cut of the money. Then me and the few persons I actually worked closely with could go out, get a nice dinner and a beer, and do what we... [more]

JaredSeth's comment about a really nice gift is a good idea too. Just make sure you give everyone the option of which version they want if you get something that isn't gender neutral. E.g., if you get a watch, get ladies and mens versions, but ask people which they want first. Trust me on that one.

MBA. Or find a start-up. Or look on Craigslist for jobs. Apply to anything that sounds interesting. The pitch depends on the job requirements. Emphasize projects and/or experience that relate to the job requirements.

Buy buy buy! US stocks are a bargin right now. As long as you won't need the money for awhile, you could do really well investing that amount. Though you should consult with an expert for proper diversification.

There is a section here about the order of non-numerical useage. I don't think there are hard and fast rules.

If you're doing domain specific writing, you should consult the appropriate style guide for your discipline.

If you're just writing, say, a Novel, just use whatever you want but be consistent internally.

Ask post: apples as a side dish
Depends on if you want sweet or savory. If you want sweet, just dice the apples into small cubes (about 3-5mm on a side), the cook on med-low heat with butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Add butter and brown sugar until you get the texture you want--the more you add the thicker and goop-ier it will get.

When I took it, the test spent the first 15 minutes teaching me how to use a computer ("This is a mouse. You can move it!") and teaching me how to use the test software ("Click here (queue big arrow) to choose C for your answer!"). It was quite annoying.

But don't sweat it. It's just point and click.

I spend a few minutes every day in the MSDN IE development forums helping people. I may start answering IE tagged questions at SO. I consider myself an expert in that area (since I worked on the damn thing). I sort of feel like it is my duty to help people who are struggling with its terribly designed and poorly documented extensibility model.

Another, and possibly more important one, is these... [more]

Ask post: Hope me bring enough rope.
Get the nylon rope. Get as much as you can comfortably carry. It's the sort of thing you find uses for. Even if you can't see a need now, it's best to have some around.

I took mine on three trips before I used it, but the fourth trip would have been much soggier without it. Then I loaned it to a friend to use to build a raft on the fifth trip.

Thanks for reminding me I need more rope.

Ask post: Before I buy a new stand mixer...
I personally find the Kitchenaid to be overkill for a single egg. All of the attachments and the bowl need to be hand washed. That's a lot of work for a single egg. I would just beat the egg in a bowl with a traditional whisk. They're easier to clean and you don't risk over-beating it.

But again, if we knew what you were cooking, in the larger context, we may be able to give better answers.

One important thing to note is you do not have to give 30 days notice on the 1st or anything. If you gave notice today, e.g., they would have to pro-rate next month for 10days of rent that you owe.

If you want out, write a letter today and give it to them to day. Keep it short and sweet, include your name, current address, date you will be leaving and forwarding address.

But yes, it's legal. And it always bites you in the ass the first time... [more]

Most of these UIs are prototypes that have undergone zero usability testing. People[1] are just now starting to get the programs-as-windows metaphor and understand right click. It is very difficult to make new UI that doesn't follow established conventions. You have to make how it works so obvious that people don't even realize they're learning something new.

And future glass? I'll give odds that doesn't ship in the next 20 years.

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, what is true is that new technology is often invented before anyone really understands it's proper use.
