Fungi are weird
and poop ozone as well
No, that would be bad, since Ozone at ground level is bad (or at best not helpful). If it could poop it into the upper atmosphere, then that would be good.

Duke Nukem Trilogy
I call bullshit. Now instead of one game that's never going to ship there are three games that are never going to ship? I sat through that trailer and its four minutes of total wasted time. Not a single in-game shot? They make great trailers, but they're not even working on this game any more. They just showed up with this to make fun of E3 and everyone who cares about the never ending saga of the best game ever that never shipped.

There must have been a game at some point. I worked with a developer that I respect quite a bit and he left the company for which we both worked at the time to move to Texas and work on Duke 3D. He was really convinced it was "almost done." I think this was about a year or year and a half ago.
I mean, he wouldn't have left a really good job and moved halfway across the country without to work on the most notorious piece of vaporware ever without seeing... [more]

Searchme - Visual Search Engine
Why is Google better? I just tried it out and here's what I found:
1) The search results were very relevant. If anything, it seemed to have less noise in deeper results than Google.
2) Being able to see the snapshot of the page saved me from lots of click-and-back actions. In fact, I read most of them from the snapshot and never left searchme.
3) Being able to see the metadata the page publishes by hovering over the little info panel at the... [more]

Google is better because...
Yeah, most of those are true. Though it is Beta, so we can forgive #1 and assume they'll fix it. As for #4, I've used it to help me find a site that I know what it looks like but can't find it in the long list of google results.
I think it is a good tool for some situations. I think #2 is the most important point--it's just too slow to really compete in the 90% case with google.

Traffic Scorecard
This list is obviously compiled from some list of bullshit statistics that someone thought up. Having lived and driven in many of those cities, I can safely say that Seattle is by far worse than San Francisco, LA, Chicago, Dallas and Houston and NYC.
Why? Because in those other cities you have options.
Options as in you can get there in some way other than driving; maybe take the subway or hop on a bus. Options as in you... [more]

Place matters
St. Louis: You should be like everyone else or leave.
Seattle: You should make more money. Also, you should care less about money.
Palo Alto: I dunno yet. But the whole TV-glow vs. Books-on-shelves thing kinda bothers me. If you walk past my house you'll see the glow of the computer monitor, which sometimes is a TV and sometimes a Visual Studio machine and sometimes both. You won't see any books on shelves because my apartment is too small... [more]

My "Seattle" should really be "Seattle's Eastside Suburbs." Gurple's "Seattle" is "Seattle City and Freemont."

Want a Kaffiyeh with that Donut?
Man, I dislike Rachael Ray as much as the next guy, but this is just silly. A society where Dunkin' Donuts and Rachael Ray even exist is bad enough, but this silly posturing and finger pointing over something so incredibly stupid and obviously secular doesn't even deserve acknowledgement.
Crap. I have just contributed to the problem.

This is very cool. It really shows what you can do in 3d with Flash, as well as what it's limits are. It works pretty well on my high-end workstation, but on a Mac Book Air, it gets choppy when looking at the globe of pictures.
It isn't the best UI ever, but it sure isn't the worst!

Annoying Software : A Rogue's Gallery.
People. It isn't hard. If you want something to not start on boot:
1) Install the debugger to c:\debuggers.
2) Create HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\[process-name.exe]
3) Put a reg_sz value in your new key called "debugger" and set it to "c:\\debuggers\\ntsd -c "q"".

For those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in july.
I'm still of the opinion that Trent's interesting musical output peaked with broken, but I love the direction he is taking things financially. I'm glad the industry finally has a mainstream (it feels funny using that word to apply to NIN) artist who is willing to throw off the shackles of Big Music and prove that good music and honesty and integrity in dealing with your fans can be just as profitable.

But if the record companies aren't making any money, those companies won't do what they've done in the past to make music a central part of youth culture.
Good. Great. FAN-frickin'-TASITIC. Music companies should not be dictating youth culture. Youth culture will do just fine without them.

When I was an active Youth Culture Participant, I learned about new bands by seeing them open for other bands I liked. The best way to promote art and culture is to get people out there participating in it.

Well, whatever the OP intended, I think most people took it as first: look at this cool distribution model (that we've talked about before) and second: also you can download the new NIN.

Stuff nobody likes: blogs about stuff people like
Heh. I hate it when the Internet is wrong about stuff I like.
To all you haters: this site is just a bunch of guys who got bored and started talking about how silly the "stuff * people like" sites are and decided this might be a way to subvert them and make fun of them, or at least something to pass the time. I suspect beer and/or other substances may have been involved.
So just, like, relax and take it for what it is.

I've seen Berry at Blueberry Hill in STL. It is actually what I did the night of my 21st birthday (BH is 21+). The man is ancient, but he can still rock. His finger agility is ridiculous. The man has a 7 or 8 fret reach... no mere mortal can play the guitar like he does. He can still sing pretty well too. He still invites all the ladies in the crowd to come up for the final song, which is kinda old-man-creepy.
But if you're in the area, I'd recommend going to see... [more]

Chuck seems to have developed a much more sophisticated harmonic sensibility since he wrote the song
He's notorious for making shit up as he goes along. If you watch Hail Hail Rock and Roll, you'll see interviews with band members saying things like "yeah, we rehearsed it all day yesterday in G but during the show he decided randomly to play it in B." When you've been doing it that long, I guess you gotta do things like that to keep it interesting.

Cheika Rimitti, Mother of Raï
I'm not sure I would describe it as badass, unless that term has taken on a drastically different meaning since I last thought about it. Since I can't understand the words, I can't really judge it on it's lyrical merits. But the beat is simple, the melody is vaguely eastern and the guitar isn't really all that earth shattering. What is the appeal?
