Are the actors on Mad Men really smoking? This show seems to revolve around smoking. There are very few scenes without a lit cigarette. I'm wondering if they hired actors who smoke or if they use some kind of stage ciggie?

I'm trying to remember the name of an SF novel I read back in the early 80s. It took place on a generation ship that has lost its way.

I live outside the US but I'd like to watch US based content on my Mac from places like
Hulu. Is there an easy Mac application that will seek out a working US proxy and make all the changes? I'm thinking of something with a big on/off I've played with the massive proxy lists- but most of them seem to not be working. I would pay for an easy solution.

I'm trying to create a Flash based video playlist widget that looks something like
this. I would describe myself as an intermediate Flash user, pretty well-versed with action script and creating UIs. I don't like creating things from scratch though, and I'm looking for libraries that would help me parse an RSS feed in Flash and any example code of displaying video players within another swf file. Any help?

On our Linux web server, for some reason /var/lib/php5 has filled up with files to the point that we can't even get a directory listing. We are running out of inode space for the filesystem. How can we get a directory listing to find out which files need to be removed, and remove them?

Where does the practice of saying "come in Tokyo" while pretending to adjust a woman's breasts like an old radio set come from? I don't do this- but I know someone who claims it's a reference from some TV show or movie.

We are hunting for a new Linux or BSD dedicated host. The one we have now, while good - is oriented around resellers - so they are more comfortable working with Virtuozzo and VPS users. We're looking for something kind of stripped down, on a high-end, dual processor box.

I'm looking for a cheap device to import VHS video onto my MacBook. I've looked at the
Canopus ADVC55 but it seems like overkill for what I need - I just want to turn my old home movies into DVDs.

PollDaddy but one that will let me ask a series of questions. Is there anything out there like that?

When will the next MacBook update happen? I know Apple doesn't tell, but could someone give me an educated guess based on product lifecycle? I'm about to upgrade, but I always buy right right before they update.

Remember that MASH episode that was entirely filmed from the perspective of the wounded soldier? He couldn't talk, but he could nod, and when he nodded the camera would nod, like you were looking out his eyes. I'm wondering if there have been any films created from a 1st person perspective.

Say I was using a Web Content Management System that was covered under the GPL. If I made lots of modifications to the CMS, but only used it for my own site - do I need to provide my modified CMS to the public to download? I'm debating this with a friend - I thought it was only if you are planning to
redistribute the software to others, but now I'm wondering - and certainly don't want to a afoul of the GPL.

I bought an ibook recently on ebay here in Australia. I've just been emailed by the police today, informing me that the laptop was stolen merchandise. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to return the laptop to the original owner. (I would want no less if it was stolen from me) - but do I have a chance of getting compensation from ebay? the laptop was about $1,200 AUD. Any tips on approaching ebay and negotiating this are very welcome.

I'm looking for a simple Ajax commenting script that will allow commenters on a blog-like site to submit comments without actually leaving the page. I've found the one for Wordpress - but it seems to be a little too specialised for WP templates to be easily adaptable for my site's needs (though I will if I have to). Any links would be much appreciated.

I've gotten my 5 year old a 1/2 size guitar for Christmas. I remembered as he picked it up for the first time from under the tree this morning- that he is left handed. I'd like to be able to teach him the basics. Should I restring the guitar for a leftie, or teach him to use his right hand for strumming? What do most left handers do? Should I train him Jimmy Hendrix style?

My wife and I have this crazy idea to start an import business. The notion is to drive a big van down into the heart of Mexico, load up on cool homewares, (pottery, etc.) and drive it back across the border. How realistic is that? Does NAFTA apply? Will they pull out the latex gloves every time I come back across the border?
