Advice on solar hot water systems in the UK? What do I need to know?

Solar hot water and central heating for dummies? I'm in the UK, our (gas, combi) boiler has been rubbish since we moved in, and given that we're now looking at a new boiler we're thinking of complementing it with some sort of solar panel based solution. What should we look out for? What do we need? Can we reuse our existing radiators? What questions should we ask installation companies?

What song should I learn on the guitar first?

I've just bought my first guitar & amp. I want to teach myself. What songs are easy for a complete newcomer to pick up?

How do I fix my shed roof?

Our shed roof is falling apart - the underlying wood seems fine, but the waterproof layer (felt?) has in part blown off in a recent gale. I plan to buy a roll of something on the internet, strip off the remaining waterproofing, and then attach the new stuff. So my questions are: What do I need to buy to put on the roof, and how do I attach it?

What sort of garden shredder should we get?

We've got a garden. We don't have a car. Soon, the garden is going to change and produce a lot of waste vegetation (that hedge has to go, etc. etc.). So I'm looking at purchasing a garden shredder, and I realise I know nothing about this sort of thing. Is a petrol powered shredder that much better than a good electric one? Is there anything else I should know about these machines?

Is there anything like fun-runs, but without the running?

I liked doing fun runs and half marathons. Are there any other sports which offer similar events? Are bike races as beginner friendly?

Help me get to the garden! How can I unlock the patio doors?

In our new house, I can't work out how to get out of the double glazed sliding patio doors. They are locked, and I think I have the key (well, I have a key), but they just won't open. What am I missing?

I want an exercise bike which can charge my phone. Does such a thing exist? If not, could I make one?

Is it possible to buy an exercise/stationary bike which generates electricity? If not, how hard would it be to build one or modify an existing exercise bike?

What can I get as a leaving present for my good neighbour?

I'd like to get a gift for my neighbour, as we're moving out soon. They've invited us over for "A Banquet" to say bye (which is fab!). Pertinent details: she's friendly, about 60ish, Islamic, from Bangladesh, she likes growing vegetables. She's been a good neighbour over the last 7 years, but partly due to the language barrier, I haven't a clue what she likes to do. Any suggestions?

Highlighting the original questioner's comments in Ask Metafilter - good idea or bad?

Often in Ask Metafilter the original questioner chimes in with clarifications or extra information, but answerers don't necessarily read all previous comments before chipping in. Do people think it might be a good idea to highlight the original poster's comments in thread? (Obviously this only makes sense for Ask).

What's the NHS smoking cessation program like, and how can I prepare for my first meeting?

I'm going to see the smoking cessation nurse at my local GPs surgery next week (UK). I have a 2 part question about this. Firstly, I'm interested in trying Zyban as an acquaintance said it was really good for them - is this easy to get on the NHS? And secondly, what's the smoking cessation program actually like and is there anything I can do to prepare now (for example, keeping a smoking diary or similar)? I'm fed up with my frequent unsuccessful solo quits and am really serious about making this one stick, so want to go prepared.

Is this an ebay scam?

I'm selling an item on ebay (large, collection only thing) and two people have now mailed me asking if I would withdraw the item and they could pay cash right now. This smells fishy to me. Am I being unduly paranoid?

Help me boot into windows with a broken bootloader and no installation media...

I've messed up my boot loader. I have a (working, legal) XP installation, but it won't boot, and I don't have any Windows installation media. How can I fix it? Linux, Windows and general stupidity feature in the creation of the problem, and getting the computer ready to give away in time for Christmas is the aim.

It is... The Woles! Ho-o-o-o-o-owl!: Name that song.

Name that poorly remembered song for me - something about wolves, maybe by 3 Mustapha 3 (but maybe not). It existed on an old mix tape from (I think) about 10 years ago, which may help date it.

Worst violence in Hungary since the fall of communism...

"We lied in the morning, and we lied in the evening," ... "Evidently, we lied throughout the last year-and-a-half, two years. You can't show me any significant government measure that we can be proud of, other than, in the end, we managed to drag the government back from the brink." 150 injured in rioting. brought about by the leak of a taped speech by Ferenc Gyurcsány wikipedia

The inline image debate revisited: I know this has been discussed before, and I know that images are sometimes useful in AskMe, and I know that I may have had a sense-of-humour bypass... but isn't it time we got rid of them in MeTa and MeFi? I don't think that "bloke being shagged by a robot" gif adds anything to the site at all. Or the "this is not an appropriate front page post" one. Or the "elephant poo" one. Or any of the other pictures in the thread below this one.

From an ethical perspective, should I go for platinum or gold?

Gold has all sorts of ethical problems, but I have not heard anything about platinum. Is this just because it is rarer and more expensive (so I'm unlikely to come across it), or is it actually a morally better choice?

Yeah but just try and find a hotel room...

The Edinburgh festival is the largest arts festival in the world. Some 1,867 shows will be perfomed during the month of August, ranging from well known names and faces that many of us Brits will know from the telly, through to puppet shows and people reading the phone book live on stage. Hundreds of other lesser-known shows are on in the smaller and weirder venues. Some performers are blogging, and of course there are other bloggers telling us what's what.

Jane Tomlinson

6 years after being given 6 months to live , Jane Tomlinson has raised shedloads of money for charity. In doing so, she cycled from Rome to Home (yorkshire - 2500 miles), was the first terminally ill person to complete the Florida Ironman Triathlon, has completed numerous marathons and half marathons (she's the first person to have completed the London marathon whilst on chemotherapy). Her current challenge is to cycle across the US finishing on the 6th anniversary of her diagnosis. It's not all fun. Yesterday, she had a bottle thrown at her, was followed by a cop, and sprayed with road chippings by a lorry.

arrested abroad?

Ever wondered what to do if you end up in a spot of bother far from home? Fair trials abroad is an organisation campaigning for the fair treatment of Europeans arrested abroad. They deal with campaigns like the Free Craig Alden campaign. Unlike the famous bloke there's no history of child abuse and no real evidence of an offense, but there is a history of standing up to authority and evidence of legal incompentence. If you're from the US, you have to rely upon these people instead.
