Please explain the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s.
Magic The Gathering collectible cards had a similar 'bubble' burst when Wizards Of The Coast re-printed a bunch of cards that were previously printed in very low numbers. Some of this was done as they expanded into foreign markets (and made the cards available in foreign languages), some of it was that they realized that they had printed far too few of some cards and attempted to rectify their mistake by re-issuing them in a new set (Chronicles). This elicited howls from collectors who had... [more]

Table for 6 in Vegas
Nobu, in the Hard Rock, has the best Japanese food I've ever had. I go there without fail every time I'm in Vegas. Expensive, but worth it.

Lightweight gaming.
If you enjoy the Fallout universe, then try the predecessor: Wasteland. You can find it on TheUnderdogs for free (abandonware).

Open World video games
I saw fallout 3 mentioned above, but not the first 2: Fallout and Fallout 2 are both very open world games.
If you enjoy either of them, be sure to look at Wasteland, which is the spiritual predecessor to the series. Commodore 64 - era graphics.

Classic SNL bloopers?
John Belushi cut open guest host Buck Henry's head with a samurai sword near the end of a sketch. Buck Henry had to get a huge bandage on his head, the rest of the cast added them over the course of the show so that eventually everyone had them and buck blended right in.
This is the wikipedia entry, episode 30. I've seen it online before, but I can't seem to find it now. Definitely one that's worth watching the whole episode for.

Beach Volleyball Bikinis
The female players play in leagues that only allow them to wear bikinis, and they practice in them as well, so I suspect that if the Olympics were to allow them to wear whatever they wanted, they would still wear something similar, although perhaps not quite as skimpy. Check out their warm-up outfits for what they might wear (tight leggings, short-sleeve shirt)
The men mostly play without shirts in their non-Olympic play, so they are playing in a more substantial... [more]

Fun with a purpose?
Try playing Dance Dance Revolution. It's workout no matter what your skill level. There are cheap (as in, free) PC versions, all you have to buy is the dance pad (get the $20 at first).
You can give it a try at your local arcade first, if you have one nearby.

Mystery in the fast lane
Some bikers affix magnets to the underside of their bike to get the road sensor to detect them. At least, that's what I read.

right turn on red from outside lane
I don't know if it's currently legal, but the drivers handbook about 6 years ago said that you could only make a right turn on red from the curb lane. That and that it is never legal to drive with only your running lights on (I picked up the handbook to answer those questions for myself).

The current version of the handbook doesn't mention needing to be in turn curb lane though (page 21). So I'm going to assume that since it was removed that it must now be legal.
sadly the daytime running lights thing isn't in there anymore either.

Quarter Life Regression, or how to get back into Magic: The Gathering
Don't forget that the rules changed pretty significantly in 6th edition. You can get a good taste for them by reading online articles or playing the official client online.
Interrupts are no more, you can play abilities/instants after the stack has started resolving, combat damage now uses the stack, regeneration/damage prevention must be played in advance (or at least in response so it resolves in advance), tapped blockers still deal damage in combat. That's short list... [more]

A shocking twist?
The Seventh Son series is filled with this. Famous characters are given secret motives, or odd powers that let them do what they do. Of course, sometimes they just don't do what the real-world version did at all, but that is generally the exception.

Seconding Cosmic Encounter, although it's a little short on backstory, the permutations that can be played are truly staggering and fun. Supports up to 6 people, games can take 30 minutes to hours.
Get the Mayfair version that comes with some of the old expansions included, and buy "More Cosmic encounter" if you get through all the aliens in the core set. Unless you like flashy art, then get the Avalon Hill version ( I haven't played that one). Whoop, looks the... [more]

Picky jerks need a new game
Cosmic Encounter- one of the inspirations for Magic: The Gathering. There's even a flash version you can play on-line. Every player is involved in every turn, so there's no boredom. The rules change every game, and there's tons of things to add in as you get more experienced (multiple powers, kickers, reinforcements, flares, moons, lucre). I started playing it the same time that I played Talisman and I enjoyed CE much more. It's the only game that I've played literally form sunup until sundown.... [more]

Working PC version of old "Virus Wars" game?
You may want to look at Robot Odyssey, which I believe has been ported to Java. It's less fighting and more questing, but I found it vastly enjoyable in Middle School. The main aim is to wire your robots to perform certain tasks which get more and more interesting and challenging.
It's the 'sequel' to Rocky's boots, which, if your kid is younger (3-6 grade?)may be more appropriate. In any case, both games use the same wiring interface and logic gates, so either is a good... [more]

What can you tell me about Cairns?
Just got back from our honeymoon in PD in November- you'd be crazy to stay in Cains if you can afford to go to PD (and for your honeymoon you should splurge, IMHO). We stayed right downtown and had a great time. There are lots of great restaurants, not too noisy, very clean. We ate a different place every night, never needed a car, had lots of nice walks on the beach and great tours that all picked us up at our hotel. I would stay at a small hotel or vacation home in town as opposed to a resort,... [more]

Atheist here, and I volunteer at the Y. At no point in the process of signing up (fingerprinting, background check, lots of forms) was my religious inclination asked.
They do have lots of kids programs, especially in the summer, so if teenagers hanging out in the gym/weight room bother you, then you might want to try to go when they're not there (depends on the school calendar).

Creative ways to distrubute flyers and laws against them.
In some places (certainly many large parking lots) it's illegal to leave fliers under the windshield wipers. And when I find a flier under on my window, if it's a service I might conceivably want, I make a mental note of that business so I can make sure to NEVER do business with them.
If I were going put up some fliers I'd do it on college campus bulletin boards.

Do to Fend Off Attacks From Unleashed Animals?
Most dogs will release when their hind legs are pulled apart. I have a friend with an over-aggressive dog who I've seen use this technique to get it to stop fighting. If the dog has a grip or is attacking something, I'd grab one of it's hind legs (assuming that end is closest) and pull sideways.

Driving Sydney to Perth via Alice Springs in 3 weeks?
Wow, I've done a similar trip (around the perimeter of the country in 2 months), and I would NOT undertake the trip you are describing. If you expect to 4wd at all (meaning, you are driving on "developmental" or unsealed/unpaved road), then you should plan to drive 1/2 as fast, much much less if it's rained recently. You will need to have a vehicle with a Snorkel if you're going anytime around the Wet.
Some people do legs of the trip you are describing as 2... [more]
