My high school self is devastated by this news. Current me is a little sad, too. So it goes.

MeFi post: Chemistry without those blasphemous isotopes!
I wish I could unequivocally think that this was a good idea by UC. I just feel really bad for the kids whose parents forced them to attend one of these schools. They never stood a chance.

I was about to post these, after reading them and crying my eyes out. Glad I searched. Glad people are reading them. Thanks, BTGOG.

MeFi post: Flipper? Is that you?
Brainy: I remember reading a long time ago that elephant skulls were the source of cyclops lore, that the trunk hole was thought to be an eye socket.

Oh man. I read that too, growing up, but had completely forgotten it until this very moment. I'm pretty sure it was in a Zoobook about elephants. Regaining this memory has made me bizarrely happy. Thanks, Brainy.... [more]

MeFi post: Go to Your Room
My anecdotal evidence proves these conclusions truer than true. My sister did the same stupid shit I did in high school, but she didn't get punished for it nearly as severely as I did, because by the time she was doing it I had gotten into a good college and shown my parents that your kid doing stupid shit in high school won't keep them from fulfilling the dreams you have for them. Parents learn too- as they go, even.

MeFi post: That's that-there yell.
I was wondering the exact same thing, miss lynnster. How he went about knocking his teeth out with a chainsaw while keeping his head attached is just one of the many things I can't figure out about this video.

I can't wait to go to my friend's wedding in Kentucky next month.

MeFi post: Lies I've told my three year old recently.
It's really great to lie to kids when you're a camp counselor because you're not responsible for any long term effects that your lies may have. In the summer I'd say right around 40% of everything I say to campers is a bald-faced lie. It is a long-standing camp tradition and, really, tons of fun.

I teach skin diving and can dive pretty deep into the lake- farther than any of the kids, at least. The reason that this is important is that nearly every kid under 12 at... [more]

Excellent. My favorite part was when he stopped playing the ocarina but that version of him stayed on screen for a while and just kind of bobbed his head to the music. Utterly charming.

MeFi post: A Shot of Bleach Ought to Dew It!
In a bizarre confluence of two of the myths mentioned in this thread, I knew a kid in high school who drank a capful of bleach because he thought it would help him pass a drug test (he had been smoking pot).

Sys Rq: You mean the earth isn't flat?

Please be respectful of my religious views.

Also, that Dunder Mifflin game (thanks, brain_drain) was really fun because it was tricky to translate the info I've gathered from watching (too much of) the show onto a map of the office, which is a way in which I'd never seen it presented before.

Every time I hear about the golden ratio, I think back to 6th grade and "Donald [Duck] in Mathemagic Land." Cool stuff.

Head to about 6 minutes in if you'd like to see the "golden proportion," as they call it, explained in a way a kid (or an adult like me) can understand and enjoy. It's mainly about the golden rectangle.

MeFi post: Minimalist Sky Diving
The 250 ft ski drop is insane. Just because you've got skis on you can jump off of whatever you want? Yeesh. I broke my hip on a blue slope in January. Makes me feel pretty uneasy.

Also, the no-parachute guy freaked me out. I was nervous for him the whole time.

Maybe I should watch fewer videos of people doing crazy things.

MeFi post: Trebek: the glue that holds television together.
When I was on Jeopardy! I got to watch some of the other games in my tournament. During commercial breaks Trebek would take questions from the audience. If anybody got the microphone and said "Um," before asking their question, he would interrupt them to say "Don't start your sentence with 'um.'" and refuse to take their question.

The most surreal moment, however, came when some poor woman in the front row lost control of herself and called out an... [more]

MeFi post: What would Darth Joker do?
I used to have an old comic where Superman and Supergirl were in the core of the Earth, tossing nuclear weapons into the molten part. They were both smiling and one of them was saying something to the effect of "Our invulnerable bodies are no match for the heat of the inner earth, so we can help out by destroying these nuclear missiles where they won't hurt any one else!"

The lightsaber doesn't stand a chance.

Detroit depresses me too. But it's a city that can be saved. And writing it and its seven year old girls off because it's a "violent shithole" just contributes to the problem we're so anxious to blame its savage residents for.

On preview, brevator, I agree.

Ah, "BDM" (as my professor called him). His international relations textbook was the first one I read in my undergrad poli sci major. I liked it a lot. Made good sense. Never got too far into his line of thinking though, because I preferred Plato to preference orders.

MeFi post: Squaring the square
From what rudimentary understanding I can gain of all this at this time in the morning, it's looking to be pretty neat indeed. If I wanted to decorate a wall like this, would I need to hire a mathematician as my interior decorator?

MeFi post: Serfs of the Turf
I get the feeling many of you were picked on by football players at some point.

they ought to just stop calling the players "students" (because, let's face it, that's an insult to actual students)

But let's not confuse the people who are there solely to participate in those spectacles with the people there to actually get a diploma.

Why can't universities admit students... [more]

I missed the part where anybody argued that varsity sports help all students stay active and healthy. They raise awareness for the school. They provide a unifying force and sense of pride among the university community. they're fun. They create well-balanced individuals. And they most certain do not, at least at my favorite team's school, take resources away from the majority of the student body, unless you count charging for tickets, and that's totally optional. Here at Michigan the... [more]

In encouraging spectators to identify with one side or the other, it helps perpetuate the us/them false dichotomy which leads to racism, nationalism, classism, colonialism, exploitation and war.

You must have missed this.

So I did. I liked the video where he strips nekked and then rips off his skin and muscles. Is dressed up as a member of Kiss the iconic image of Robbie Williams held by people all over the world who don't miss things?

Because mine is pretty much the stripping thing.

My whole family saw some bastardized incarnation of the Monkees when I was 11 or so. I couldn't believe how loud they were. My mom insists that, upon leaving the concert I declared, "I don't care how old they are! That was awesome!" This does little for my street cred.

It's interesting that on many of these questions the poles (i.e. "strongly agree" and "strongly disagree") have many more votes than the middle-ground answers. At least there are a lot of people out there who believe "strongly" in the same things I do.
