MeTa post: Quarters for PhatLobley!
Sorry I missed this thread. I got busy this afternoon, but samph did bail me out with a roll of quarters. I repaid him with Oberon.

Happy birthday, bettafish.

I'm in for a meetup whenever. I must say I've been very impressed by the generosity and willingness to help of AA Mefites. I'll buy a round to say thanks. Let's set a date. This weekend? Late on Fri or Sat evening works for me.
posted to MetaTalk by PhatLobley at 10:19 PM on June 4, 2008
Hmm, John, I think bettafish's arguments for Ann Arbor are, at this point, more compelling than yours. Care to respond?
Saturday sounds like the day. Location TBD. I'm gonna sidebar this.

ABC sounds good to me, so does Dominick's. Sat night surely works. In the interest of starting to start creating a consensus, I'll say, yep, HB, ABC. 8:30?

That makes 2.5 of us. Huron Bob, you in? Lentrohamsanin? ulotrichous? John of Michigan? Bueller?

Hope to see a lot of you there.

I'm at the end of the bar on the left when you walk in, for anybody else checking on their phones.

I could probably make it to Detroit sometime that weekend.

MeTa post: Cultural Biases In Education
Oh, come off it. When kids see a picture of a guy in a speedo, they'll perk up. They'll be engaged. Then the teacher is free to teach whatever lesson he/she wants to about Castro. Just because he didn't introduce the unit on the civil war with a picture of Abe in his skivvies doesn't mean the teacher is some kind of Rah America John Birch Society member. I'm all for examining the mindsets of teachers (mostly interested in their believing that their students will fail/ succeed), but this... [more]

There's nothing useful to be learned by seeing Castro in a swimsuit.

Good god. You feel compelled to declare someone an ass based on one tiny, tiny nugget of insight into his pedagogical approach. All we know is that he might show a picture of Castro in a bathing suit. If you knew for a fact that he was going to put up the picture, laugh maniacally, hand out a "Fuck Commies" word search, and take a nap for the rest... [more]

MeTa post: What are MeFites listening to?
I have this theory that some downbeat/ambient-ish artists get a Last.FM advantage because people fall asleep listening to them and it runs on through the night.

I can tell you that Guster is in my top ten most played artists because one summer at camp I got in the habit of listening to Lost and Gone Forever when I was going to sleep. I use it frequently to cure my insomnia, but haven't listened to it while deliberately conscious... [more]

MeTa post: Self-linkage
MetaTalk threads that efficiently serve their intended purpose make me quite happier than they should, in the grand scheme of things.

But I don't care. I'm taking what I can get.

MeTa post: Neat comment!
Am I the only person who is annoyed by sidebar-nomination MeTa threads? It's a very cool comment, but don't we have "fantastic" flags and favorites so that very cool comments can float to the top? I don't like the idea of every comment somebody thinks rocks the house being made into a MeTa thread.
posted to MetaTalk by PhatLobley at 8:31 AM on April 17, 2007
We'll get through it, Dave Faris. As for my comment being nominated for the sidebar, however... That may not be something I will be able to live with.

MeTa post: St. Louis meetup (weekend of 3/9-3/11).
Horseblind's weekend works for me, the next one doesn't.

I like the idea of Blackthorn. But I'm in for any place.

I'm in for wherever on the 9th. Blackthorn is closer to my home, so I guess I vote for there.

I'd love to split a pizza with somebody, though I typically prefer some type of flesh on it. If nobody offers to split with either of us, horseblind, I'll go for a more humane pie.

Any photos up on flickr or anything, just out of curiosity? It was such a huge meetup full of rockstars I think it would be a shame not to publish photographic evidence of it.

MeTa post: I have to take issue with Brandon's "but what...
I (the original questioner) addressed atomly's comment in the thread. I don't think he/ she was out of line- I was really enjoying the discussion that was going on. Brandon, I still think your answer was great because, as I said in the thread, it got me refocused on the kids, the real reason I'm at the school in the first place. I think atomly's point was valid and I addressed it. Not sure it needed a call-out, unless you just generally have an issue w/ somebody arguing over whether an... [more]

And geekyguy: Redundant? Other than one atheistic, which I misguidedly used to convey the message that I'm not a complete atheist in the sense that I feel 100 percent sure of it, when did I overuse that suffix? Public? Perhaps you mean redundant within the word. Point taken. There are certainly more eloquent ways to convey the impression of my slight agnosticism.

All of my students were compelled to sign... [more]

MeTa post: Homophobia is not acceptable, period.
So if I'm not allowed to call him homophobic ...then why the gibbering fuck are you all allowed to call me stupid?

Caddis has pretty well answered the charge that he is a homophobe. When are you going to demonstrate your lack of stupidity?

On preview, Tiddles said it better.

Much like most of us here have opposed anyone who calls gay men "uppity fags," but you had no trouble putting that in our mouths.

MeTa post: Sleazy romancefilter update, please?
I met horseblind, the vegetarian entering the White Castle-eating contest at the Saint Louis meetup. The contest has not happened yet, but it will. He said the most likely date for it is Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping to be there and he certainly got enough encouragment and interest from those of us under the Arch that I'm sure he'll follow up.

MeTa post: User Sighting on Jeopardy
Weird! I honestly watched Jeopardy! tonight and wondered to myself when the mefites I remembered having mentioned that they'd be on the show were going to appear. I think I'm psychic.
Also, as a Jeopardy! vet who missed one final J question and was offstage without any money for another- and someone who's living in a certain 2-word college town- boy did I feel for everybody on that last question!
Great job, Dreama!
