Converting a logo to a font
If the logo was created from an existing typeface, it might be easier to simply figure out what the font is. If you send me the logo, I'll take a look at it. My email is in my profile--matt at fandango dot net.

Help me grieve for my pug
My wife and I are probably going to meet her parents at the vet tonight to euthanize her wonderfully sweet and chirpy cat that her mother brought home 20 years ago as a stray kitten. It's terrible, because we're losing a member of the family. I have tears in my eyes as I am typing this, and I just wanted to offer you my sympathies.

Help me find a good Logo!
I'm a graphic designer and art director. I've worked for large design firms and I've designed identities, brands, and websites for several large corporations, and I've done independent work for small companies and groups (like churches) and a few MeFites. I'd be happy to work with you, or I can refer you to another designer. My email is in my profile--matt at fandango dot net.

What would you give someone in a juvenile correctional facility?
I would try to send things that help do three things: to keep his mind occupied and sharp so he's not looking for ways to further his criminal career, to give him hope, and to let him know he is loved.
Seconding A Thousand Words for Joy. I'd add How To Win Friends and Influence People.
I'd also send lots of puzzles and mail-related games (chess). And letters, and photographs.... [more]

Snow Removal
Ah, yes. When I was a wee lad, I too had the same idea. "I'll just hose the snow out of the driveway!" I thought triumphantly, marveling at my own cleverness for making a hard job easy. So I grabbed the hose and turned on the spigot, and I learned some important lessons about physics.
The first thing that happened was the hose shattered into four or five pieces, as though it was glass. This lesson, I later learned, was that as a substance's... [more]

Car Wont Start
The clicking sound you're hearing is the solenoid on the starter--the battery has just enough juice to engage the solenoid, but that's it. Cold weather does indeed kill batteries, but after you install the new battery you may also want to check to make sure the lights in the trunk and the glovebox are not staying on after the lids close.

posted by Brockles Unless your car has one of those odd, US -style systems that always engages the air-con system unless it is pointed to vent, maybe? But even then, it will only draw the same as an aircon system, so even more reason cold weather shoudl make no difference as compared to your summer consumption. There certainly isn't any more load than an aircon system in there, that's for sure.
That's exactly what I thought... [more]

Stop my tree swing from twisting!
You'll also want to make sure the ropes from which the swing seat hangs are not parallel to each other--that is, the width where the ropes connect at the seat should be 3/4 of the width where the ropes connect at the branch. If you're facing the swing, the ropes and seat should form a tall, skinny, inverted isosceles trapezoid.

Ah, I just saw the swing is 20" wide, rope-to-rope. Make sure the rope-to-rope distance up at the branch is at least 60" (5').

How to limit daughter's access to wireless internet
1. If it isn't already, move the computer into the family room where its screen is visible to everyone.
2. Explain to the daughter, "I need to be able to trust you, and you need to act responsibly. When you say you need the computer for homework but you are instead using it for goofing off, you're not acting responsibly, you're breaking the trust I have in you, and you're lying."
3. Set a time limit for computer use, and enforce it.... [more]

Name That Vintage Camera
I'm almost certain your father's camera was indeed an Exacta--here's another view of both the camera and the "doghouse" viewfinder you described.
I know Nikon (and possibly Leica, but the Leicas are rangefinders) made a waist-level viewfinder for its 35mm SLR cameras, but this was a special-order item--that is, it wasn't standard-issue with the camera and unless your father was a professional or very serious amateur, I'd be surprised if he had ordered a... Are you certain they're rats? A rat turd is the size of a grain of wet rice; a mouse turd is the size of a grain of wheat. At any rate--and I hate to be the one to break the news--if you've got rats, the unfortunate reality is that for every one rat you see, you have ten more hiding elsewhere.
You need to contact your landlord immediately and ask him or her to get an exterminator up to your place, pronto. You might also consider buying a few rat traps--here's my earlier... [more]

What to do with all that beautiful stained glass?
For what reasons are you not interested in keeping the windows? By removing and selling the windows, you're severely affecting the resale value of the building. Future buyers will be very disappointed to learn that the stained-glass windows from 1911 are gone forever.
If you must remove them, please keep them in the basement so the windows stay with the building. A future owner, historian, or preservationist will undoubtedly want to know of their existence and he or she... [more]

Would you live near train tracks in a nice apartment?
If both apartments are in the same building, you'll hear and feel the train in both, so you might as well take the larger place. You'll quickly get used to the train.
I live less than 100 feet from train tracks used by both passenger and freight and these days, I barely notice the sound. The freight trains vary in length, speed, weight, and volume, so the sound is always slightly different, but the passenger trains all sound the same. I got used to both within a week of moving in.

I should add, however, that the sound and vibration is drastically different if your train tracks are on concrete or a metal trestle. The tracks next to me are on dirt, so the vibration and sound are cushioned.

If you discuss this with your boss, one thing you might consider mentioning is the fact that Buddy Rich is costing the company money--every time he breaks your concentration with his drumming, you have to start over and redo your work. He's making it impossible for you to do your job efficiently and correctly.

I should add that lots of times, money is the only language spoken by management. An annoying co-worker is not their problem, but if you couch it in terms of costing them money, it's suddenly a lot more important.
