Ask post: Chances for ex-lawyer to enter clinical psych PhD?
Thank you very much, Silvertree. Just to clarify, I wouldn't try to complete my master's program in 9 months, just apply to dotoral programs after having been in a master's program for 9 months. I'd be hoping to finish my master's program in 1.5 years (starting spring of 2009 and ending BEFORE the Fall of 2010 when my PhD program would start).

Ask post: How to effectively teach law students legal research and writing?
Two things:

1. Give them interesting bits of real legal and non-legal writing.

2. Have them practice in class. Have them do as much writing as they possibly can, and give them feedback on as much of it as you possibly can. Have them give each other feedback.

3. Please don't waste your time giving boring lectures to the class, which is very easy to do in a subject as dry as legal writing can be. You can tell if you're... [more]

Ask post: How to un-accept a job offer?
I wonder if you've really investigated all the options for living in Big City A without a terrible commute. Even if, for example, Big City A was New York City, a very high cost of living area, there are places in Brooklyn, Queens, parts of New Jersey, or even in Manhattan where two could live relatively cheaply if you don't need a trendy area or a gorgeous apartment. I know a public interest lawyer who is living on a relatively low salary just fine in Spanish Harlem. There is certainly no need... [more]

Ask post: How strange it is to be anything at all?
You, I, and everyone else are only blips of existence. We have no inherent importance to the universe.

All assumptions, of course. We have no way of knowing this.

They're the best inferences we can make given a body of collected evidence.

No, I don't think there's enough evidence to even come close to a valid inference. We don't know where we came from, or what (if anything) happens after death. We don't know the origin of the universe, if there is one. We don't know why there is something rather than nothing.

There's no way with our tiny knowledge caught in a vast web of ignorance... [more]

Ask post: How do I get motivated despite feeling that everything is pointless?
I think the really interesting question here is: why do you want to feel differently? Why, indeed, do you want to do anything differently? Why not just accept your feelings and behaviors as they are, including your sleeping a lot and reading old books?

I think your internal mental reply will be something along the lines of, "I want to be happier, and being active and interested in new and exciting ventures is the path to that." But then the question is: do you... [more]

Ask post: How much should I pay my lawyer to settle a wrongful death claim?
Well if you're interested in a settlement, and the other side is amenable, you might also consider a good mediator, perhaps at the American Association of Arbitration. Their point is to generally to get parties to a settlement, and they are quite cheap compared to the costs of going to trial.

Ask post: Identifying forums on specific subjects
Yes, I think asking on other forums has got to the best means (a Google search is a quick start, though not always very accurate). I would suggest trying to find a larger board on a "parent" topic at a place like Big Boards and then going there and asking for more specific discussion places.

There are several issues here:

1. Where you want to go.
2. Which fields of study can get you there.
3. Whether you can enjoy field B.

Though these are interrelated, they also have some independence from each other.

You need to think widely about (i) what kinds of vocations you might enjoy if you could do anything you wanted to, (ii) what areas might use Ph.Ds in field B, (iii) what areas might use... [more]

Mugabe has been a rat-bastard for a while now, at least since the 1982-84 timeframe

Agreed. From my limited reading, Mugabe seems to have been a vicious, paranoid thus (albeit a very well-educated thug) from the start. It's very sad that he was charismatic and ruthless enough to come into power and help devastate the nation.

Put more broadly (and yes, I know, Libertarians will argue this--let's take it as read that I understand and categorically disagree with your arguments, so no need to go on about them), we pay taxes, some of which revenue goes to helping the weaker. Logically, those who are incapable of making rational healthcare decisions are weaker in some sense. Follow that to its conclusion.

You have much less "freedom" because you are tied to a massively inefficient system that is trying to deliver a service that the vast, vast majority of people in this country consider essential.

Except, you know, in every democratic polity that's ever put a single-payer or nationalized health care system into place. But apart from all of them ever, yeah, this is a real danger.

I already talked above about the fact that in Canada you can't legally seek private medical care, and how this exerts pressure on you to take care of yourself, since you may be waiting a long time for many procedures in Canada.

There are no Exercise Police forcing you to jog, anywhere.

Actually, yes there are. Mandatory military service in countries like Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Norway come to mind. Yes, of course they are instituted for other reasons too, but I'm sure public health benefits are on the short list of reasons of why they maintain these programs.

I understand that you don't think the WOD is necessarily good, but it really doesn't have anything to do with the cost of addiction to society.

Well, sure it does. The idea is that drug addicts are a weight, a burden on society. The (maybe mistaken) thought is that they are bad workers, bad drivers, bad parents, bad citizens. They injure their bodies (which needs to be paid for), are unproductive, and their judgment is screwed up. So the naive War on... [more]

Are you high? This would be a spectacularly stupid thing to do to lower health care costs -- take a population that's almost entirely healthy, and put them in much greater danger of the single greatest risk they face: accidental trauma. Not to mention that this clever public health plan misses a few people. Such as "women." And "pacifists."

Physical education classes in grade school also expose kids to "accidental trauma.... [more]

I like the idea of running for state rep. But you might want to take a course or two in economics (or read a reputable economics book from a conservative point of view, like "Free to Choose"), so you learn other points of view & see that situations aren't as black and white as you think.

Ask post: How can I bring myself to like doing something?
I think the simple answer, based on my vast experience with this topic is: you can't (easily). It's a lot of work and bears uncertain results: you're better off discovering and pursuing what you actually like. Instead of trying to make sport x lovable, find sport y that you like better.

If you have no choice but to do something, then of course you should try to find those aspects in it that you most enjoy and focus on those. But that's tricky, so you're better off seeing... [more]

Ask post: Should I go to law school?
Don't go to law school unless you are certain you want to be a lawyer. It will saddle you with debt and you'll be pigeonholed into legal jobs it will be difficult to escape. Nor does law school teach you "how to think like a lawyer" in a way that you couldn't pick up from reading some books.

The only caveat I would say is if you don't think you can or would do the necessary work. No point in being the guy who failed out of a top 10 law school. Go there, spend the 3 years, and do what it takes to succeed.

Not much need to worry about that unless you're truly irresponsible. It practically takes effort to fail out of these schools.

Ask post: Why are dead gnats appearing on my bedroom windowsill?
Hrmm, thanks...

This is a bedroom window, a triple-window setup where to pull either of the side windows open, you push them towards the center, and they are right in front of a center window.

I don't see any ventilation ducts or gaps in the wall, either, though maybe they are small and I'm just missing them?

Perhaps there are gnat eggs that I'm missing in the tracks for the windows? I try to clean all the dust there up, but maybe I haven't been successful...

GilloD, thanks for the disgusting story! The weird thing is, they're really just on or around the windowsill and the floor underneath. And the floor is clear. They're nowhere else in my room... so it's got to be something in that area, and there are no containers I can see near there.

So I don't really get the whole "ethical" question there.

There's a perceived conflict of interest. Where someone might judge a case where they have a personal stake, they are ethically supposed to recuse themselves. That's the argument, at least.

But that's unrelated to the article, to McCain, and to my point.

Your point was that Obama should not be blamed when two noncontroversial candidates could be confirmed and a quorum formed. The Republicans may or may not be willing to do that. Thus, whether or not that is feasible given the political environment, arguably Obama should not be the lynchpin holding the status quo in place. My point is that, if recusing himself, Obama should not be withdrawing decisions long made.

It's a good point. But there's a question about whether the hold is a "decision[] long made" or is a continuous sort of decision, akin to, for example, jailing a journalist for contempt for refusing to reveal a source. No one would suggest that once made, such a contempt order should not be withdrawn if the judge suddenly suffered a conflict of... [more]
