MeTa post: Music Talk and Charts and Challenges, Oh My!
By the way, on the challenges page, the current challenge is very hard to read with the plain text theme.

MeTa post: Oh shit, it's a walk-off!
B, but I would prefer it in two columns.

MeTa post: Self-link/Spam fighting
Maybe it would be easier, like somebody suggested long ago, to put the first time FPPs into an approval queue?

MeTa post: Mumbai (India) meetup in May?
another Mefite who happens to be a chef

If you're talking about Madman, I think he's in Bangalore.

MeTa post: Canberra Meetup
I might be in Canberra around that time, but can't say for sure yet.

Yeah I'm still in Canberra. If you canberrites (?) want a repeat meetup, I'll gladly make it. (I'm here for another 15 days, bees willing)

MeTa post: I come here not to praise favorites but to bury them
Gmail calls those emails that you want to track as 'Stars'. But I guess a star is too loaded a word as well around these parts.

MeTa post: Raising the level?
I think snarky comments are fine as long as they are not among the first few, since they can so easily derail the conversation.

What happened to Contacts' favourites?. Has it vanished or moved somewhere else?

MeTa post: Is the MeFi Writer's Group still alive?
I reckon the only way a writer's group would work on Mefi is if it was part of Mefi. Somehow. A bit like Music.
posted to MetaTalk by dhruva at 5:29 PM on November 5, 2007
How about this: A member makes a new story/piece/whatever (Maybe there should be a word limit of some sort, or even a link to a blog where said piece is presented). Then the rest of the subsite would operate more or less along the same lines as the rest of MeFi i.e., people comment/critique/favourite. It probably won't get much traffic, and given Matt's reluctance to implement this as part of MeFi...I don't know if it'll be feasible.
posted to MetaTalk by dhruva at 7:39 PM on November 5, 2007
Well, the most successful iteration of the Writers group here had only a handful of members, so I don't think volume will be a problem. A lack of volume might be one. And if there are themes to write on, then the volume is likely to be even lower/constant. And I'm firmly of the opinion that it was the blog format that felled the previous two attempts.

MeTa post: Guy Who Posted That one Funny Comment has added Total Frikken Stranger as a Contact!
stavros: I reckon Metafilter and its subsites have become so big that there is a need for something like this. A filtered view of Metafilter, so to speak.

MeTa post: The demon lived at Mach 1
It's pretty much a hardwired rule of Metafilter: if you say that you like X, many many people will come along to say that X is crap.

MeTa post: Meetup in Sydney
I'm keen. Either day should be fine. Of course, unless something dramatic happened at the last meetup which seems to have reduced the rest of the sydneysiders to silence.

Not a bad idea. Abandoning the Alfred. I mean. I recommend the Lord Nelson near the Rocks, but Newtown should be more fun.

MeTa post: I LOVE YOU ALL PLEASE LOVE ME TOO
I kinda agree with Stavros: the problem with favourites being a dual purpose thingy is that even though I know that maybe somebody is just bookmarking them, I instinctively give more attention to any comment with a favourite, and in cases like this, it is annoying.

MeTa post: Santiago, CL, meetup.
8 is fine with me...but i´m staying in Londres, and hopefully I´ll find a map of the city that i can use to get to wherever this Normandie is. I guess it can´t be far, and maybe i´ll just have a channel to cross :)

I reckon I´ll walk . Just to reconfirm, the normandie, 8pm, and I´'ll be the indian (de India) guy speaking bad spanish. For the love of god, somebody please put a card or something saying MeFi, I've previously had the totally demoralising experience of asking random strangers if Metafilter meant anything to them...

MeTa post: How about a MefiFiction?
I reckon the reason the previous attempts didn't pan out so well was mostly because of the interface... and because it was essentially separate from MeFi. And cortex, neither projects nor music or even Jobs for that matter get posts all the time, so the amount of posts is no argument against a subsite.

So where exactly do we meet? Hyde park fountain?
posted to MetaTalk by dhruva at 5:10 PM on March 4, 2007
If we're looking for old fashioned pubs along the Rocks, I recommend the Lord Nelson. Since I live in Marsfield and it takes atleast an hour to get back home from the CBD, I hope you guys decide on someplace in the city instead of some god forsaken holiday town halfway to Jervis Bay just for the sake of a meat pie :)
posted to MetaTalk by dhruva at 4:57 PM on March 5, 2007
Fine, then. Since the Alfred is fast becoming MeFi HQ down under .... And since I know my way there, it's fine. I propose we meet at the Alfred and then wing it.
posted to MetaTalk by dhruva at 3:16 PM on March 6, 2007
I'm wavering as well- much as I like the Alfred, I'm getting a bit bored with it :)
