Ask post: Need a Cheap Guitar
Do not go to Costco. Do not go to Best Buy. Do not go to Guitar Center. Do not go online.

Do go to your locally owned music store. Buy a used one. That way someone else has eaten the depreciation for you, and you get a $250 dollar guitar for under a bill.

Ask post: Cheap amp with great clean tone for stereo effects
Man, I can't recommend the Roland Cube enough. Get the largest one you can afford. I have four (two bass, one guitar, and the mini-PA). Each one is for a different type of job. I don't know where to start--they're just the best small, budget SS amp ever made. They will cost you a bit more than a Fender Frontman, but so does anything else.

Oh, the Cube 30 (aside from slaying all else at the price in tone) sounds much louder than its wattage would lead you to believe.

Ask post: Beck and the Question Marks?
I think Roger Manning of The Jellyfish is currently with him.
posted to Ask Metafilter by sourwookie at 10:12 AM on September 21, 2008
Damned if I can remember his name, but back in '98 I playedva few gigs with Beck's keyboardest at the time. He was (Asian) Indian.

Aha! Just remembered his name. Theo Mondle. It was a pleasure gigging with him.

And I guess Beck just uses Roger Manning in the studio, not on the road.

(sorry about the awkwardness of my earlier comment--posted from a phone while watching a roller derby).

Ask post: Help us stay dry!
As far as keeping yourself dry, I've always subscribed to the little and as light clothing as possible philosophy. It only applies in warm weather though.

Wear good sports sandals. No shoes or socks. Wet footwear is misery, though skin and sports sandals dry in minutes. Wear swim trunks. Lightweight, they dry in minutes also. A super lightweight synthetic shirt. Really open weave, one that won't cling to the skin (much) when wet. Avoid cotton, denim, socks, etc. They... [more]

I agree that I would never hike in sandals but the original poster didn't say they were hiking, just camping.

BTW, old Boyscout (Life, sacrificed Eagle to join the local symphony) and avid camper here, too.

Boy, that $5.00 poncho works better than about anything you could score for $50 from a boutique camping store when used in conjunction with the clothing advice I gave earlier.

If you can bring a "Living Room" tarp, do so. Just learn your Taught Line Hitches (for easy adjustability as the tarp gets heavy with water) and a Sheep Shank (so you... [more]

Ask post: What the heck is wrong with my laptop??!!
Oh right, before thinking about a reinstall, run Spybot, Adaware, Housecall and maybe AVG. That should take care of most common spyware issues.

Sounds a lot like Spyware. Spybot is a good removal app to start with if you can get it to download.

When it freezes, press Ctrl-Alt-Del, open task manager, sort processes by CPU. What's grabbing the most resources? That's your problem, start from there.... [more]

Ask post: DAG Nabbit
You can take the D A G from Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See" and superimpose the extended outro to The Beatle's "Hey Jude" over it.
posted to Ask Metafilter by sourwookie at 6:45 PM on August 9, 2008
ludwig_van: Sorry. When I was thinking F, Eb, Bb, I was locked into a V, IV, I MO in terms of Hey Jude. The I is the F, therefore making it a I. vii, IV, progression and you are correct.

Damn: my ears translated that as an F V chord, Eb IV chord and a Bb I chord .

Still, the Marshall Tucker parallel holds.

I've started using a hotplate with a Dutch oven and woodchips inside the bottom of my Brinkman smoker. Just perfect. All the smoke I want as long as I want and a constant 200 degrees indefinitely.

Ask post: Smoking Foods At Home
I don't know how you would smoke cheese in a gas grill. Too hot.

I smoke cheeses quite a bit. I use a cylindrical Brinkman smoker, about 6-8 briquettes on a cool day, with lots of wet wood chips and a pan of ice water in the middle.

The trick is to not break 90 degrees.

Ask post: Line 6 X3 Live?
I 'd belore inclined to get ME-50. No menus, editing mode, or annoying "drill-down" parameter adjustment.

It's layout more closely resembles that of a traditional pedal-board, without pedal-board hassle. Everything is tweaked in real time with dedicated knobs.

Oh. I missed the part about using it to ditch the amp.

Not related to that specific model, guitarists I know who have tried going without an amp on stage and using a modeler through the PA generally found it kind of unsatisfying. Like a level of detachment from your instrument.

Ask post: Faster Than a Speeding Gas Pump
I had it on good authority that some stations will re-calibrate the pumping speed of the pump when prices are high in order to reduce the chance of people pumping more gas than they could afford or intended to.

Ask post: How to license my songs to a student filmmaker?
Negotiate for points. Either neither of you make money, or you both make money.

I've been there before, we treated it as fair (and I've never made anything off the documentary we appeared in).
posted to Ask Metafilter by sourwookie at 10:26 PM on April 19, 2008
1. Ask for points. A super tiny percentage >1% of DVD or online sales of the movie, a higher percentage for soundtrack sales (should they release a stand-alone soundtrack).

2. No license to alter the tracks, unless you're a CCL kinda guy, then let them.

3. Demand a link to your website.

4. Make it clear you own the song and can release it in any context you wish, no matter how the movie fares.... [more]

Ask post: Neat instruments for guitarists
If you go the Uke route, get a Baritone Uke. With a Soprano or Tenor, you have to deal with the shorter scale length and that oddball high string in the bass position. With a Baritone it is merely the high four strings of a guitar (tuned as a guitar is also--no readjustment). The scale is also closer to what you're used to.

You'll like it. Your G chord is one finger (no low E or A string), the C major and A minor chords are the same, but context makes your intention... [more]

Clarification: I have no reason looking at the pictures to think the cello is Chinese. But statistics...

At this point, you can't tell by looking. I stress this again: When it comes to orchestral strings; the best these days are really coming from China. This isn't the type of thing made by 9-year-olds in a factory. There is a serious "Luthier Culture" happening. We are talking about tradespeople trained by tradespeople in a series of apprenticeships.... [more]
