Taco trucks are yesterday's news anyhow. What you really want is a cemita poblano truck.

I rarely see a bacon wrapped hot dog much westerly, but at the Thursday La Cienega Farmers' Market there is one stand that sells them. But then you can't have the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Burrito.

I just want more episodes of Metalocalypse
One bone to pick about that SFGate article - It may be news to people outside the guild, but there isn't a single thing in there that would surprise the writers. They knew they were putting their jobs on the line, and shows get cancelled in the middle of every season, strike or no strike. If the strike ends it will be because the contract is good enough for more than half the membership (maybe even just half of those that submit ballots, I'm not sure), not because anyone needs to get back to... The Boss of It All
Though I don't love von Trier's work, this looks good. But more importantly, in David Bordwell I finally found someone else who thought "The Departed" wasn't edited particularly well.

Ubuntu Studio Released!
And it's foh-oh-foh. How am I supposed to snark when the single link is busted?
What the hell, I'll give it a go!
This is good news for free-source zealots who happen to be home-studio tinkerers and for no-one else. And it's probably not even that good news for them! They already found the apps they need to do their artistic work.

I hate Mac fanboys telling me this. I can't afford your beautiful and overpriced hardware.
Do you hate that you can't afford it? Do you hate that there is a lot of design work put into Macs as compared to grey-box PC's? You can buy an expensive but ugly Windows machine to do a lot media work if you prefer that, I guess. Or you can pretend that the tools available on Ubuntu Studio afford a creative professional (or even a hobbyist) a comparable... [more]

Actually chrominance, I didn't say it was better designed than anything - I said there was a lot design work put into them. And I'm actually not talking only about the aesthetics. I've been inside of computers for twenty years, and I've always found that Apple does a hell of a better job for access to components (on the systems with expansion capability, anyway - the iMac is another story) than any other case I've had the displeasure of cracking.

This is pretty cool - They don't seem to document the step of adding media, though - Seems like that would be one of the more difficult problems.

You know, you don't have to read anything.
I'd be pretty surprised if the 400 page abridgment is of any more use in terms of "cultural literacy" than a 70 page Cliff Notes (or even a wikipedia precis). So anyone defending these abridgements on the grounds that longer==smarter is a fallacy is probably falling for the same fallacy.

"We" don't get mad because a director doesn't have final cut, "we" get mad when commercial considerations trump artistic ones. It's a fine line, and plenty of people like the originally released version of "Blade Runner" more than the director's cut. But there is a reason for the phrase "Hollywood Ending." When the studio cut versions of films are more interesting and satisfying than what the director wants, more power to the studio. The idea that... [more]

Heh - I guess I should have checked out his bona fides before making that flip remark!
The list does come off as pretty douchey, but after that first reaction, I sat back and wondered if I believed that he could have received so many poorly though-out proposals as to make such a list meaningful. I decided can believe it, and it makes me more sympathetic to a prickly demeanor.

Coolest tables evar
That is truly slick. My guess upon seeing it was in the order of $30,000, but I'm not surprised I guessed low. Is it worth it? To the folks who buy it, I guess. If the tables move as smoothly and the tops fit as tightly as they seem, I can't imagine it being truly mass-produced. I'm sure you have to tune the mechanism of each table individually.

Soup
I made a huge pot of turkey broth from the remains of the 21-pound bird from Christmas Eve. I am thinking I'll make about a third of it into a thick stew by adding about a third a cup of rice and simmering until that's mostly dissolved, adding some sliced chicken sausage and maybe some canned tomatoes towards the end. That still leaves a couple quarts. If I were at home instead of out of town at the inlaws, I'd freeze half of that and leave the other half in the fridge to be eaten slowly over... [more]

Postapocalyptic Bleakness
I saw La Jetée on a double bill with 12 Monkeys at the excellent Castro theater in San Francisco. I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned Terminator - I've read that the writer acknowledged the French short as a direct inspiration as well.

I wasn't able to get myself through all ten parts without skimming, but it seems to me that the journalist failed to conclusively prove the source of the chocolate, rather they found that one of their speculations jibed with the taste test. Maybe Noka is lying about the countries of origin...
Maybe they buy from that company, but get a special batch made just for them, and its indistinguishable from the regular stuff.
If someone from Noka or the supplier confirmed their relationship because the journalist brought enough pressure, that would be one thing. If the journalist had dug up import paperwork or a customs declaration or any actual proof it would be different. Instead you... [more]

Impossible Watch?
Unclench, people. Randi is awesome. This is a puzzle about that ad image. He knows it is a photoshop, and he is saying there is something wrong with it. In the last paragraph, which starts with the word "incidentally," he gets into some silly speculation that the whole thing is a hoax, but that's not really the crux.

How do you know he's wrong? He hasn't said what he believes is wrong with it yet. There is speculation about what is wrong with it, but nowhere has Randi said what he identifies as the problem.
Do you think that image is an unretouched photo of the actual watch? The four images you linked above aren't even identical to each other in the details on the watch.

The challenge is 100% to spot the parts of the image that are inconsistent with it being a photo of an actual object.
For the record, here are the things I think he is referring to:
1. The second hand fails to cast a shadow consistent with the other shadows in the image.
2. The bezels are inconsistent.
3. The shadows at the top are inconsistent.
or possibly
3. What... [more]

petsounds, not only do you not value the industry of art, you don't even value the art. If the writers of the works you want to read in the New Yorker were not paid for their effort, you would never see them. Because in 99% of the cases, if they could not actually earn money creating it, they would not have time to perfect their craft. They would be too busy earning their livings. There are already distribution channels in place for authors who have not been accepted for publication in The... [more]
