The New York to Los Angeles Metafilter Goodwill Caravan 2008
I really gotta make a better effort to get out to this one, and I will chime in to say the Indo Cafe is REALLY good, but as a communal ordering type place, might be impractical depending on how many are showing up. Or posssibly actually totally practical, as they actually do the risjtafel smorgasbord-type thing for a large party. I actually like the Irish pub around the corner on Motor, which has pub grub of Irish and less Irish persuasions. The karoake place I usually find even more... [more]

I may try to swing by the museum but I'll email klang for info on post-museum drinks, which is a slightly higher probability.

Astro Zombie, if he had said he was McCarthyist, it would be similarly odd-tasting to me. If he said he was a child slave, and it turned out he had to mow the lawn as a teen-ager, I'd also be offended.

Ethiopian + Molly Malone's (if there's no cover) sounds pretty good for me, but I'm only at about a 50/50 - my usual, at this point...

Dang. Looks like fun... Now that I have missed two (three?) LA meeups within 3 miles of my house, the next one is likely to be in Anaheim!

Writing posts that adhere to MF style/content rules
He's been a member for two years, but the only comments he has ever posted were made a half-hour before he made his first FPP a few days ago. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'd say he's just an axe-grinder. With less benefit and more doubt, I'd say he's trying to drive traffic to his blog.

languagehat, all the supporting links were links in the original article. The only change from the article itself was a link to it in the first word.

Still not really plagiarism, but it's not a single-link/multi-link issue.

Oof! I was looking at September... I'll be coming from The Valley if at all, and chances go up if it's near my home, which is near Klang's, which is near Culver City. On the other hand the last one was a mile from my house, and I didn't make it, so I would not make any plans based on me, if I were you.

Corrected link
This is not a typical one-link youtube post. Watching the video is a chilling and fascinating experience. Frankly, its power would be diluted by including other sources, which certainly would have emerged in the comments anyhow. Seems like a hairtrigger deletion, though probably not for the reason ortho implies.

I want my askme back!
The only real concern seems to be this: Matt & Jessamyn feel the need to moderate all questions, remove sarcastic and off-topic answers, etc. And there's only two of them, so they have to cramp down on the volume.
Are you saying you have the secret answer that has never before been shared? Because I don't think that's case. I am almost positive that they are trying to make AskMe optimally good, not easier to run.

Ironically Non-Descriptive
I don't read by RSS. I suspect that if I did read by RSS, I would only use RSS to read those sites that are regularly readable and non-annoying when read by RSS. Otherwise I'd get annoyed. If I persisted in reading sites that are sometimes annoying to read by RSS, I don't think, however, I would try to solve my problem by imposing on anyone else.

You might think before laying on that much snark, I'd check and see who the OP was, just in case I might actually know them personally.

The way the site works now, there is unfortunately no way to tell conclusively if a question that stays on the front page for some X longer is more likely to be answered. Looking at my own questions, there are 6 stumped, and all the others were answered in less than 12 hours. So maybe it's ok as it is. But I think it must be clear that with questions hanging there longer, there is a greater likelihood that the more esoteric ones will get answered. To my mind, it is the esoteric ones being... [more]

One thing I think would help would be some more intrusive category views, like tabs near the top for each category. If it was a single click into a filtered view of any category, the experts might head over there. Those who just like to browse can continue to do so, but perhaps motivated answerers will dig deeper into their areas of interest.

I think you misspelled boring. You don't really meet the author, given that about 20 posts in after her 2nd or 3rd post, she's banned from the site.

Self-link. Brian, you're not supposed to link to...
This is a perfect example of why the rule is in place. The main reason I spent the 30 seconds looking into if Brian was involved is because the post is so uninteresting, only someone connected to the project in some way would bother to post it.
I find it a little amusing that neither hybernaut nor commonmedia are able to correctly construct a link. Or are hyperlinks too Web 1.0.3?

Daniel Pinkwater wrote about experiencing Art. The gist is that if you want to see Great Art, you need to see a lot of not-so-great art. But you can't just skip the art and go to the Art.
The web is big, so big that you can't actually expect that every post on this site will be the Best of the Web. You have to settle for all these things that are maybe not even best so you can experience all the Best ones.
