malevolent: Good point.
Thanks for the answer's I'm pretty sure my server can handle the requests, it's just the data I was worried about. But twiggy's DNS option is probably the smartest so I'll have to look into that.
As a followup: are there any decent guides for setting that kind of thing up? I know it's how the majority of large sites do it.

Similar music to Brad Sucks?
Wooo. I want to give a helpful answer but I'm probably exactly the wrong guy to say. I have no idea who I sound like.
I can tell you though that people often tell me I sound like Beck, John Vanderslice or Folk Implosion. To the point where I feel kinda weird about it.
Maybe someone more objective will answer!

Please help me find an LCD monitor
My BenQ FP937s has the most faithful color reproduction that I've seen on an LCD. Most others I've seen (like the Dell I have beside it) have issues with light grays being nearly indistinguishable from from white.
Dells have really nice stands though. If you're not web designing or anything, I'd probably just get a Dell.

Help me make music for MuFi
Are you using compression on the vocals? Compression is super super important for anything even close to a "pro" sound. You'll want to squash them pretty good so they stay loud and proud on top of your mix.
Other tricks I use: doubling (two separate vocal takes), doubling and stereo pan (take the two separate vocal takes and pan them left and right, making it sound super wide). I also usually shelve everything below around 250hz or so to clear out some of the... [more]

Background Music: free/cheap
Might want to check out Magnatune (full disclosure: I'm an artist on Magnatune.) Lots of music with liberal and cheap licensing options. I'm not even sure if you'd have to license it for what you'd be using it for. They're real personable, so I expect if you emailed them about it you'd get a response.
Lots of different genres to choose from in order to suit the atmosphere of the store. Classical, new age, electronica, rock, etc. And definitely no DRM hassles to deal with.... [more]

Do I need to check gmail's spam box?
I get more false negatives (maybe 10-20+ a day) than I did using Spambayes in Outlook before. But the only false positives I've noticed have been mailing lists or other spammy looking things. I almost never check my spam folder anymore.

Prozac. Is it making me "average"?
Yeah, talk to your doctor. It varies so much from drug to drug and person to person it'll be hard to find a consensus.
If anything, going on antidepressants made me feel like I got back to being creative and complex, not the reverse.
Maybe you're getting a sedating side-effect from it? What you describe isn't the way they're supposed to work, so I'd hit up the doctor.

BitTorrent + Donations = Viva la revolution?
The idea is decent but I think scarabic might be right. Why not find a way to hook donations into all the trading activity that's going on right now?
It would be interesting if someone would build a verified directory of where to donate money to artists. Have an open API so torrent trackers and other music trading sites could implement it as a feel-good gesture.
That way if someone's on some torrent tracker and is grabbing my album they could... [more]

The laptop's always plugged into the wall and the laptop power is fine. And it'll do it as I'm sitting there hitting reload back to back so I don't think it's idling or anything.

Gilgad: DNS is what I originally suspected as well. But the TCP/IP settings on both machines are set to obtain the IP and DNS servers automatically. Could they be getting detected incorrectly?

Why is XP taking so long to reboot?
Most times I've had a stupidly long boot time like that it's been from some poorly set up network connection that it kept trying to connect to when Windows started.
I'd head to Start -> My Network Places -> View network connections and check in there. Or go to your device manager and see if there's anything funny in the network adapters section. Try disabling things and rebooting and see if that speeds you up.

How do I ignore one of a blog's authors?
I don't know of any way to exclude authors off the top of my head. But you can get the posts of particular authors like this:
http://www.cosmicvariance.com/feed/?author=6
And you can get the different author IDs by visiting the contributor pages linked on the right sidebar and checking out the 'Posts by [author]' link.

$7000 ebay fraud
Someone I know got burned on an eBay purchase and months later after many complaints and dead ends eBay gave him something like 75% of the item price. I'm not sure how many hoops he had to jump through for that, but I was shocked he got anything at all.

Should I start using iTunes?
Maybe a week ago I decided to give iTunes (for Windows) a shot again. But it was a total resource pig and not something I feel comfortable running 24/7 like Winamp.
Winamp's memory usage was something like 5mb when idle, 15mb when playing. If I remember correctly, iTunes was 40mb all the time, plus it had some iPod detecting service running that I couldn't disable (as I don't have an iPod.) It's been uninstalled and probably won't get tried again without hearing there's... [more]

Backing up
If you get a 100-120 gig drive, it may be simplest to just back your 80 gig up onto it. I only do specific folders, but I have a smaller backup drive.
As for software, I use Syncback Freeware -- it's a nice simple backup utility. I have no idea about the software that comes with the drives but I'd take a guess that it's not very good.

Adsense ebook worth the money?
I was curious about the book when Chris Pirillo recommended it, but it smacks of a get rich quick scheme. And while I'd love to get rich -- and quick -- it doesn't inspire me with a hundred dollars worth of faith.
From looking at the examples, I assume it boils down to: "make a site that ranks highly in Google searches for decent keywords, now completely choke it with ads so searchers who wind up on your website will leave via a Google ad. Each time you attract and... [more]

How can I WANT to quit smoking?
'Wanting to want to quit' and 'wanting to quit' sound like the same thing to me.
The only difference I guess is that as long as someone insists they only 'want to want to', then they have a pretty good excuse for not doing it.
Most ex-smokers I know quit because they knew it was really bad for them combined with it becoming inconvenient to smoke socially. I don't know anyone personally who had one clear moment or reason that made them quit, and... [more]

Firefox extension to inspect fonts?
I do use the web developer toolbar and I'm not too bad with the CSS. These tips are cool (especially smackfu's, that'll come in handy) but if there's any inheritance going on, you're stuck having to trace back through the CSS to figure out what's going on.
I was kind of hoping for something more like ColorZilla.

shoepal: I want the CD player (super loud buzzers just make me shut the stupid thing off real fast and go back to sleep) and other than that I'm not sure what other killer alarm clock features are out there.
My girlfriend has this RCA one which is okay but I can imagine a lot more stuff I'd like. The CD player itself is noisy when it starts (so you get 5-10 seconds of mechanical whining before any music kicks in), it would be nice to have a random function so it doesn't... [more]

One thing I've heard a lot is that if your knee gets swollen, normal knee use will agitate it. A regular regimen of icing will keep the swelling down and allow it to heal. Whether that's true or not I don't know, but athletes seem to ice the hell out of their joints.

I had the hiccups last week for like half an hour. While I had them I did a google search for hiccup cures and read to eat a spoonful of sugar. I figured it was a tasty enough cure and tried it and it worked instantly. I can't believe I was just enduring the hiccups like a dumbass in the past and also not eating sugar! No more!
