Frenetic in concert in Cambridge, MA
Hey awesome, it'll be sweet to meet some MeFites.
As far as I know the opening band goes on at 10:30 and I'm up 45 minutes-ish later. No cover and I'm told it's only 18+ for the bar but you may want to double check that. I'll probably be there early sound-checking and using my complimentary drink tickets if you want to hang and swap Matt Haughey gossip.
I'll also be at Harvard doing a Q&A and a few songs on the 11th which you're all welcome... [more]

FYI: If you want to come to the Harvard interview thing on the 11th you need to RSVP. Info is here.
Anyway if you're there be sure to say hi.

I should mention this will only be my second solo show with this whole laptoppy contraption so I hope you like disasters!
I should be there earlyish. I'll be the guy lugging around a bunch of bags and a guitar and looking Canadian and/or bewildered.
I'm looking forward to meeting y'all.

I wish I had gotten a chance to talk to the folks at the other end of the table a bit, but all you guys were super nice, interesting and fun. It was kind of a drag playing the show as I'm sure I'd have had more fun talking to y'all. Boston/Cambridge MeFites get a solid thumbs up!

no fans my ass
Man, you guys are nice. I thought I had nerd-peaked at having the experience of checking my email and seeing album orders from William Gibson. But this goes even further.
Greg: I've done zero touring in the US but if there's enough demand I hope to start once I put the new record out (which should be in the next few months).
Anyone who has a joint they would like me to stink up can demand me here.

taz: Certainly. Though I'm unlikely to spring for the plane ticket to rock one person no matter how much I would like to.
jessamyn: I think the words "blaze" and "stink" should be interchangeable in pot culture.

(And if you happen to actually be in Ottawa, I'm at the Live Lounge tonight at 9.)

If you have sex to my music, you will die in seven days.
Accelerando is on my to-read pile here though my girlfriend (who is infinitely more patient with books than I am) has complained it's a rough read so I don't know.

Is it wrong that seeing Metatalk in my referral logs made my heart skip more than being New Music Canada Track of the Day? I thought I was in trouble.

The thing about the MeFi titles sucking is probably mostly because the titles serve basically no purpose. So horsing around with them doesn't seem like you're doing the site a disservice.
I think there's more incentive to play along with keywords. It helps the site, gets your question read by the right people, helps you find your old questions, etc.
(on preview) Matt and I are the same person.

Or, am still i the only one on the internet with a jonesing to have a not-entirely-tech-headed online songwriting forum other than Songfight and y6^3's apparently stalled project? There's the homerecording.com bbs and of course rec.music.makers.songwriting.
I've looked for songwriting discussion boards and IRC channels, but I've never really found anything I love. I'm really excited to see where this Metafilter music thing goes.... [more]

In light of the new resident musician showcase,...
Right now I use a combination of Cubase SX, Reason and Sound Forge.
I can't honestly say I'm 100% happy with it. Rewire is kind of annoying to deal with and I would prefer an all-in-one synth/multitracker solution. Cubase has VSTis, but I haven't really found any I particularly like and VSTi latency is a whole other upsetting problem. Cubase crashes occasionally, but usually just when I'm pushing my system pretty hard.
And to agree with what the... [more]

Incidentally, I've never really enjoyed Fruity Loops much. It IS a very cool tool and I'd recommend it to people looking for an affordable drum machine type thing. But whether it's sample choice or my inability to sequence properly, back when I was giving it a shot (maybe a year or two ago), I could never get anything that sounded remotely natural out of it. It all sounded like robot computer music to me.
But I haven't tried it in a while. This just came to mind while... [more]

There are a lot of different factors to consider when starting with home recording and it can be a bit bewildering when all you want to do is rock.
My two cents are that for introductory multitracking you should go with Cool Edit Pro or Acid and if you find yourself wanting more then look into a more professional multitracker such as Cubase or Logic (for the mac, anyhow).
Acid is intended for short loops and eventually starts to buckle under the... [more]
