Feel Free! Plastic Surgery! (demo)
uncleozzy: I sometimes forget to post my stuff on here. Also I get stuck in Glenn Beck threads on MeFi.

Effigy2000: Well, these are just demos so who knows what the final thing'll sound like. I'm trying to weird it up a bit more though.

MajorDundee: if you ever want to take a shot at mixing it to show me what you mean, drop a line.

Using Live as a multitrack recorder
Lack of takes in Logic makes it nasty for any perfectionist recording work. It's a good rough/spontaneous tool but I wind up hopping over to Reaper (www.reaper.fm) for real editing.

Why did I write Logic? I meant Ableton Live. Maybe I have brain cancer.

Raw Anxious Hands
The lack of panning is an issue -- the first track has a sense of space, a band playing in a room -- but there's barely any low-end on the mixed track as well. On the raw track I can hear the bass guitar and a bit of kick and on the mixed track there's far less.

Maybe post your raw source tracks so people can take a shot at mixing?

I Command You to Be My Woman
Dan, that is my regular human voice, you know this.

How do I start a band?
Also "Hang out with music people. Go to shows. Post to craigslist." kind of covers any advice I can think to give.

Maybe you can tell us what else you're looking for? There's nothing really magical to it -- try to find some like-minded musicians then practice, practice practice. (Then replace the ones that quit.)

Monitor speakers
I've had Event 20/20bas monitors for years now. I like them a lot. I've noticed they can hide some bass frequencies on me (when I do checks on other systems sometimes the bass is louder than I thought it should be), but nothing that isn't easy to compensate for.

MixingFilter: Do you 'play' the Fader
I basically never ride the faders, though it's something I've been thinking about more lately.

How does Tunecore make money?
I was on a panel with Jeff Price from Tunecore a few years ago and he was a cool guy so I fired this question off to him to see if they wanted to say something. Peter Wells sent me this and I will now post it:
You hit the nail on the head: we make our money on single, up-front charges kept ridiculously low (we like to say "the price of a pizza and a six pack"). We cut margins tightly to make the service affordable to everyone, and we don't take any back-end (your music... [more]

Hating music
I've never hated music but I went through a couple years of feeling I had stopped liking music. I was deeply critical of anything I listened to or tried to write, couldn't find anything to listen to that moved me. Went on some antidepressants and started liking music again almost instantly, nice!

Punch 'Em In The Dick (NSFW lyrics)
Finally another entry for my all-dick Mixtape next to My Dick.

CD or not CD?
I wrestled with this question while working on my next album. CDs have been dead to me as a consumer for a couple years now, but I realize that's not the way everyone feels. Not having a CD at all would be a weird barrier to many people in the really real world.

A lot of media are hesitant to write about anything without a CD (unless you have a super strong hook) and selling digital files at shows is still hard to do. CDs still give your music the stamp of... [more]

What influenced your musical taste most... radio, tv, film or literature?
It seems impossible to decide.

I guess I'd pick radio and TV, tied. Video Hits with Samantha Taylor got me obsessed with pop music. Local late-night alternative college radio got me obsessed with electronic and industrial music.

But I'm sure the biggest influence was the classic rock my dad played around the house and the little kids' turntable and throwaway disco records I was allowed to ruin. Everything else just steered that foundation in... [more]

I should probably also give a shout out to song lyrics. Long before MP3s came along, as a broke teenager music was scarce. I'd buy some, copy some from friends and tape a lot off the radio.

There was an FTP site of lyrics (and I can't remember the name) that I regularly swiped lyrics from. Besides getting the words to songs I had, I'd grab the lyrics for songs and artists that I thought were cool and read them. There are still tons of songs I've read but never listened to.

Fake It
Thanks dan. It's weird, even though the changes were subtle, this was the hardest track on the album to mix. Mostly getting the big electric guitars to sound right (they sound thin and awful in the demo).

Good recordist reading?
I wish there were more decent recording sites/magazines. Most seem to be 90% gear advertisements and 10% worthwhile information. Lately I've been experimenting with keeping an audio forums page in Netvibes as forums seem to be the best place to keep your finger on the pulse.

Here's what I subscribe to, though I'm looking to diversify a bit (and many good forums don't have RSS which is SO annoying):

How do you use signal pre-processing when tracking vocals?
I don't pre-process at all. But I have problems with commitment.

Out of It (singalong demo)
snsranch: Beer song is sorta what I'm looking for at the end. Big sloppy crowd thing.

Thanks guys, glad you like the song. (PS: I've extended the deadline.)
