MeFi post: ...for players and plastic surgeons
<offtopic>
Yup MeFi via MemePool; back then I liked MetaFilter more because memepool had this habit of posting big long winded posts with lots of random links in them.. MeFi was more succinct and to the point.. I mean catscan - genius. Sigh...

(Now I've turned to reddit for all my simple linky goodness)

Thing is this still won't detect a stick of dynamite shoved where the sun won't shine. So it's useless.

MeFi post: Abortion as Art
This is a hoax for no other reason than she claims to have been using herbal abortifacients to do the deed... Quite the grimly provocative hoax though.

"Many herbs and plants sold "over the counter" today are claimed by herbalists to act as abortifacients if taken in certain doses or mixtures. Examples include brewer's yeast,[2] vitamin C,[3] wild carrot, black cohosh, slippery elm, pennyroyal, nutmeg, mugwort, papaya, vervain, common rue, and tansy.... [more]

MeFi post: Adventures in Rechargeable Batteries
I don't believe he is dissing the Sanyo Eneloop, it is a precharged hybrid battery even though it doesn't state that in the name, he was just referring to Energizer type.

MeFi post: The takedowns were for free whores.
My take on why people in public office seem to be drawn to such things is that separating from your partner is political suicide. So people that ordinarily would have drifted apart and divorced end up staying together for the sake of appearances. They can't be seen having an affair so these guys end up going the private, discreet route, and this is where it all hits the fan.

MeFi post: haramaki, waist warmer
If you keep your torso warm your extremities don't get cold.
posted to MetaFilter by zeoslap at 7:48 AM on February 28, 2008
To expand, the reason your extremities get cold is that when your core starts getting cold your body restricts blood flow to the extremities in order to keep your major organs warm. So if you keep your core warm your body doesn't need to restrict that flow and the fresh warm blood keeps you warm.

MeFi post: Britain: we discovered the queue
bitslayer: My grandmother and her sister came to the UK shortly after World War II and both learned English. My friend recently moved to Japan and learned to speak Japanese. So first generation immigrants haven't always just muddled along and not learned the language and I agree with Malor that it should be a priority to learn your host countries native language.
