Ask post: Husker Du?
Oh, just skip the Hüskers and get yourself some second-rate Nova Mob (or Bash and Pop if you really want to punish yourself.)

Lou Reed by the Little Willies is great.

Ask post: When it's Springtime in Alaska...
The winters can be cold, yes, but it's really not as bad as you think it will be. The temperatures stick around -25°F for most of the winter, but there is always a week or two in February where they drop to -45°F or colder.

Wow, now that's an optimist. A mere week of subzero temps in MN almost kills me every year.

My impression of the city from the people I spoke with when I visited was that it requires a certain mix of... [more]

Ask post: My nose looks like a dalmatian!
Wow these tips sound much better than the pushing I've been doing for, oh, 20 years. So will these techniques also work on the whiteheads that plague the spots where my nostrils meet my face?

Ask post: wow! wolfman has nads!
I should ask my dad if he still remembers when I hit him square on as he walked past the pitchback as I was throwing a ball at it. I just remember him stumbing into the house, collapsing doubled over onto the landing on the stairs with my mother laughing hysterically at him and me getting a talk about testicles and their sensitivity on the way to school the next day.

Ask post: How do you motivate without being a nag?
What do you care more about: his profession or his level of happiness? What if he was the world's happiest garbageman? Or cable installer? If his career and level of success matters more to you than his level of happiness, he's probably not the one.

Granted, he's not happy now, but if he's not settin' the world on fire or at least trying to make a change by this point (and he knows that it's important to you)...

Ask post: Flexing my dating muscle
Thanks all. Sometime the simplest answer is the hardest one to think of on your own (in my haze of not being able to get over myself).

I'd love to meet her outside the gym, but wouldn't even know where to start with that one, so a wink and a smile it is.

I just thought of something...
I work out 2x a week with a rowing team that has a few women on it. What it I had one of them do the dirty work for me? My beard, so to speak, in a non-threatening manner.

There are no alternatives to the trusty Levi's!

I'd say work pants by Carhartt, but they don't seem to market much to women.

Ask post: GET OFF THE COUCH
"Your revolution is over, Mr. Lebowski. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir."

The one thing that stands out to me: "Didn't find anything that met his standards."

Tough luck. Does he even have the qualifications to meet their standards? Does he know employers choose you and not the other way around? Tell the poor boy to grow up and stop leeching off his folks... [more]

Ask post: Twin Cities housing recommendation
The VA is right by the airport. So if you rent in that area make sure you ask if the place has been soundproofed.

For your price, I think you're better off renting in Mpls or buying in Richfield. Minneapolis will cost you 20-30% more for the same house in Richfield.

Cats in general are no problem around here.

You could also live right over the river in St. Paul, the Highland neightborhood is quite nice.

Ask post: Google question and Minneapolis question.
They should have a info desk in the big wide open space in middle of the joint where you can ask, but...

I know specifically there's a bus shelter outside that is in between JCPenney and the empty anchor store that used to be Mervyns. You can barely see it on that little map.

If you google maps 6901 France Ave S, Edina, MN, you'll get the mall. Zoom in on hybrid view and you'll see that you need to be on the York Ave. side on the northern side... [more]

Ask post: What's the middle ground between "F.U!" and "Welcome!"?
How much more anti-social can you possibly get?

The chance to do someone a favor is always welcome.

The whole point of having a home is that it's place you can call your own. Emphasis on the you and your. It's up to me who I allow in it and when.

The welcome mat faces the opposite direction at my stoop.

Ask post: What sort of condiments go well with a hard boiled egg?
Worcestershire sauce has always been my family's default flavoring. It absorbs right into the yolk and if you put enough in there's a nice pool by the time you get to the bottom of the yolk.

Ask post: How do I milk a lemon?
Right. I guess I should have said, "how can I break the camera further since it's already broken."

Eseentially, when they look at the camera, they'll say "Screen's cracked, not covered" and I'll counter with an "I know, but X doesn't work now. Please replace."

Puh-leeze. You don't hate to point it out or you wouldn't have. Tell me you read every "NDA", "terms and conditions," "terms of use" and "end-user license agreements" you agree to.

I'm merely looking for a way to act that satisfies the legal guidelines that have been established between myself and said big evil corporation.

Ask post: Recommendations for Clark/Ely/Hiatt/Lovett?
If you are so inclined, I recommend going over to All Music and take a gander at what they have to say about those artists and look at the in-depth reviews/bios.

I found Guy Clark just last year really, at Merlefest. He forgot some words and was distracted easily, but I still thought he was great. I picked up Old No. 1 and haven't been disappointed. Desperadoes Waiting for a Train and Texas, 1947 are fantastic songs.

Good luck!... [more]

Ask post: Alt-music choices for black teens
For the record, I am the OP and am a mid-30s white guy. I'm not looking to buy anything for anyone, I'm just curious if there's a general consensus to the question(s). Everyone I've asked in the past month (all white guys in their 30s) give me a blank stare and shoulder shrug.

If I had to use my own experience then I'd say some of us delve into the jukebox for the classics, but there's new music you listen to as a teen that truly defines that time for you and you can... [more]

Ask post: Looking for a lodge in the Boundary Waters
Do you want a remote area or something populous? On Superior or in the woods? I went to Grand Marais this past summer. I had never been there in my 25 years of living here and was blown away. Really cool small bay town. There are a few rustic hotels in town that aren't chains. Don't know about lodges.

Lutsen is in between Duluth and Grand Marais. Went there as a kid and stayed in a cabin on what must have been a resort type place. That was neat too from my recollection.... [more]

Ask post: Comix 4 kids?
Kingdom Come and Red Son? Jeez. The kid's 6. Heck, why not go all the way and recommend Lost Girls?

Both Marvel and DC have lines for youth. Whether they're imaginative and complicated, that's another story.

Is he too old for illustrated books? (Where the Wild Things Are, Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish). As an ex-retailer, I found out pretty quickly whether kids (or more often the case, parents)... [more]

Mark Millar on Red Son: It's...a very, very mainstream project aimed at the same people who picked up the first Dark Knight book. (via)

Ask post: Excellent, creative (and creativity-inspiring) music for children
I've been working on an FPP for about a week on the popularity/reemergence of alt-kids music - there's just so much to choose from! Look for it soon. I'll be sure to reference this thread too.

In the meantime, I guess it depends on how old your children are, because some of it gets too infintile once they pass a certain age (when bodily fluids are of more interest than the wheels on the bus).

Not to give too much of my research away, but The... [more]

Probably too weird and call-inny for your tastes, but I always enjoy and strongly recommend the Mischke podcast, which is just his daily show minus the ads, except the ones he does that are brilliant. All advertisers should follow his lead.

I only wish I had a sliver of his creativity. And he does it day-in/day-out.

Ask post: Why can't they just leave well enough alone?
I've been in the same situation before. Go for the diplomatic solution first. Layout why it would be a step back - get support from co-workers - make a good case. If that doesn't work start raising your voice and take it higher up. Document everything.
Unemployment's not everything it's cracked up to be and there's no guarantee you'll get a job in the time you get benefits.

Ask post: When an actor dies, does their character live on?
I remember that Sesame Street episode too. At the end Big Bird says something to the effect of, "well, I'll sure miss you Mr. Looper." To which Maria exasperatedly said with big tears welling in her eyes, "Hooper, Big Bird, Hooper."

The running joke on the show when he was alive was that Big Bird could never say Hooper's name right and he'd always have to be corrected. A fine sendoff.

Ask post: Interesting Ads?
I second the Gametap (one of my favorite spots of the year), but also the Virgin Digital print and video are pretty damn neat. Those are a great example of getting people to spend a ton of time looking at your ad. Highly engaging.
Or if you wanted to take the route of laziness in advertising there's a site out there that has scads of ads that rip each other off. I wish I could find it, but the name escapes me now. I think it's French.... [more]

Rockit by Herbie Hancock. Not necessarily about robots but had a cool video with a robot vibe.

I have a GE Superadio III. Never had a problem with it.
I bought it because steel, florescents and computer monitors in office buildings seriously screwup an AM signal. However, I had to put it in a window and use a wireless headset/FM tramsitter that so I could get the crystal clear signal from the window to me some 50 feet away without disturbing my cubemates.

Nope, I looked at that too. I googled this up and down before I posted, which makes me think I've got the wrong story, but I'm so sure of it.

I think the funny comes from the wordplay and delivery and being 13. Probably one of those things that's hi-larious as a kid but the jaded adult just gives it an "eh".

Ask post: Challenging Graphic Novels for an 11 year-old?
markesh - That's a load of crap. Escapism's escapism. There's room for Mark Twain and Stan Lee.

With comics you either get it or you don't and you find out almost right away if the medium works for you.

I'd give the lad some Marvel essentials - the black and white collections of early Spider-Man and mid-70s X-Men. Excellent stuff. DC just came out with their Showcase series of B&W comics but started with Silver Age Supermans that might be... [more]

Ask post: For every one comic that's "worth"...
For every one comic that's "worth" something, there are 100 that aren't worth cover price. Look in the yellow pages for comic books and start shopping them around. After 2 or 3 offers you'll have an idea of what you've got. I wouldn't spend any more time than that. 70s & 80s comics are pretty common as that's when the idea of collecting became the mindset instead of disposable entertainment, which is what they should be.

DO NOT shop them over the phone. As... [more]
