Medics face death in Libyan HIV case

Death by firing squad is imminent (timeline) for a Palestinian doctor and five Bulgarian nurses accused of infecting 426 girls and boys at the al-Fatah Hospital in Benghazi with HIV, after having the sentence lifted a year ago and sent to retrial. Libya stands accused of using the children as diplomatic pawns and torturing confessions out of the health workers. Nature has published a series of articles refuting the dubious evidence provided by Libyan researchers, which many think was concocted to cover up the poor hospital hygiene that likely caused the infections in the first place. Biomed Bookshelf

The National Center for Biotechnology Information Bookshelf. I was searching for an online version of the CD that came with my Neuroscience, 3rd ed. (Purves, et al). What I found was pretty amazing - a full, searchable online version of my book (albeit the older 2nd ed.), including full-color diagrams. The NLM under the NIH has a division called NCBI which hosts a horde of other cool books. [Other aspects of NCBI covered previously; book archive previously on AskMe; more inside]

Legends of the Examining Room

The doctor is in. Featured in the LA Times and The Guardian, Dr. Charles has self-published a collection of his writings. His style is florid, fluid and absorbing. But you don't have to take my word for it. (25% of book proceeds go to the Red Cross Katrina relief effort.)

Don't make us march freedom south

Containing subversive Latin America [via]. The Bush administration hasn't forgotten the troublemaker to the south (or if you prefer, the "Anti-Bush"). The US will be taking a tougher stance (that tough?) with Venezuela because they say its leader is a subversive force in the region, destabilizing surrounding countries. Is Chavez a hero? A threat? For anyone who has seen the Revolution being Televised, it's hard to say he's a villain. I suppose it depends on who you ask. (As previously discussed.)

What's a boringcake?

Because "honky" is fun to say, and a lot of us could use some angry, profane, hilarious, and well-intentioned advice.
