I seem to recall people in the thread calling for firings and a disbanding of the organization and such. And then when all those things didn't happen, people were shocked, shocked!! How dare they not take us seriously! I had a metatalk page that bombed during the outage and then when I refreshed it was an old MeFi page from 2002. I am assuming the switch occurred during the outage, but I wasn't really watching the navigation bar.

That's because the subsites were redirecting to the equivalently numbered thread on MeFi.

So why can't Metafilter become part of a coalition of sites which compare addresses and posted links of contributors and, say, flag the ones that appear on a minimum of four member sites within a brief period automatically to all members of the coalition?

I think it was established recently that MeFi is the only link site that cares about self-linking.

Can I attach my own earmark to this pony? The system considers my friends to be dullards and/or losers, as they are rarely able to reach its goal of 10 favorites. While I wholeheartedly concur, I would nevertheless like to be informed of their pitiful attempts at joining in that only attract, say, 5 favorites, if only to make them feel special. We could all then coo over their achievements like so many kindergarten cortexes.

Between the 7 frontpages, the sidebar, the meetups sidebar, the contact activity sidebar, the activity on my posts page, the activity on threads I've commented in page and now the activity on favorited threads page, not to mention various other subpages, it's getting awful hard to keep up with MeFi.

delfeugo was describing the inability to serve 304 not-changed notices because the data would be constantly changing. An RSS reader that marks items as new every time a byte changed would be genuinely useless to the point where I doubt anyone's using one. So it's about bandwidth, not user experience.
