"If someone ever asks you to describe the Internet to them in four words look them straight in the eye and say
“cats morphing into croissants.”" May not apply to black cats, unless you like badly burned croissants. Croissants are good for
breakfast, but so is
bacon. And
waffles. And
cereal. And if you include "civet cats",
coffee (
via). And maybe even
Pop Tarts.
Seriously. (Sadly the
t-shirt has been discontinued.)

Yeasayer's first album was so deeply
'World Musicky' you'd be forgiven if you thought they were from Kathmandu or Uzbekistan rather than Brooklyn. Their second album is somewhat more accessible, but their videos...well,
"Ambling Alp" is full of people without clothes (semi-blurred
NSFWness!) or without faces or made of clay or liquid metal, and
"O.N.E." is a visit to a sci-fi rave and a game of tetra-dimensional-backgammon with a CGI morphing dude. But their newest,
"Madder Red" features Veronica Mars' Kristen Bell and her pet... uh... welll... WTF
IS THAT THING?!?

Those wacky New Scientists are reporting on a
"new challenge" to part of Einstein's theory of special relativity that changes the relationship of
Space to
Time. No, this has nothing to do with
Conservapedia's laughable challenge to the theory*.
Petr Hořava** won't replace
Einstein*** in scientific importance in this new Century, but maybe
Hendrik Lorentz whose theories on symmetry apparently take a beating****. Remember kiddies, Science (especially Physics) doesn't have Absolute Truths, it just keeps getting closer to them. And even ol' Albert E. can and WILL be improved upon.

Pop music in the '60s ran the gamut from Bobby Russell's
"Saturday Morning Confusion" to
"Come Saturday Morning" (from the soundtrack of
"The Sterile Cuckoo"* and performed by the same guys who sang of
"Guantanamo -mera"). And they still write songs today about
"Saturday Morning" (with pancakes! and vampires!).
The first thing Disney did when it took over ABC was
"One Saturday Morning"**. But then there are the
"REAL Saturday Morning Watchmen" (remixed from
previously on MeFi). (
other Saturday Morning video posts)
*yes, that is a very young Liza Minnelli
**I'll never forgive them for canceling "Reboot" and "Bump in the Night", the only Saturday toons I still enjoyed, because they weren't produced by Disney

"Scenes from a Multiverse"* is a brand new webcomic from Jon Rosenberg, the Lonely
Goatherd, developed when he recently realized that when his
absurd magnum-opus reaches its pre-destined conclusion (
on the Mayan-designated Dec. 21, 2012), the
impressive bound volumes of the story were not going to pay for his kid's college education. So here are
daily visits to
random levels of
existence (if you assume all those levels of existence contain strange beings a lot like people you find annoying) without the bothersome story arc. PLUS the opportunity to
vote for the alternate universe you'd like to revisit! (bonus previ-eewww content)

Jimmy Dean (Aug. 28, 1928 - June 13, 2010) is best known to Mefites for his
brand of
sausage, although he sold the company in the '80s, and was
dropped as its spokesman in 2003; its current owner is
Sara Lee*. But his musical legacy is sealed by his 'country rap*' classic
"Big Bad John" (performed live in 2008), often imitated, but never parodied better than with
"Big Bruce"** (info). But to me, he was the guy with the variety show where he spent several minutes every week
bantering with the
muppet Rowlf****.
Here's Jimmy in Esquire Magazine's "What I've Learned". His final resting place is
music-themed, NOT sausage themed. "Here lies one hell of a man."

"And This Is Where We Leave Our Annie: For Now" After 86 years, several artists and a major makeover,
"Little Orphan Annie" the comic strip has ended... in mid-story. Leaving a hole in the comics page of less than 20 newspapers, the 'Princess of Pluck' already has a comeback planned with
a revival of the "Annie" Broadway musical. So, once more, let's all sing that wonderful song... no, not
THAT one... this one:
"Who's that little chatterbox

A perfectly
cromulent new word:
Collapsitarianism. Apparently coined by social critic
James Howard Kunstler when he declared
"I've never been a complete collapsitarian,*" comparing himself to
Dmitri Orlov, who uses the term Collapse in his writings -
a lot. It failed to be popularized by
blogger Kevin Kelly in early 2009 (during the fifteen minutes after Obama's inauguration when optimism came back; bad timing), who defined it as an umbrella term for a diverse collection of dystopian groups, but specifically the ones looking
forward to whatever Collapse they expect.
Analyzed by Mother Jones (and
semi-rebutted by Dmitri Orlov hmself), the term has even been used by such semi-forward-looking entities as
The Tomorrow Museum. The word appears to be due for a comeback (if it has anything to come back to) as the
New York Times used it in an article about Peak Oil. Finally,
premillenialism for the non-religious!

Most people don't realize that Betty White was
awesome nearly 60 years ago. In 1952, she was already TV's first female talk show host, and she became the first woman on TV to star AND co-produce her own sitcom (without being married to one of the other producers),
"Life With Elizabeth", and the show is (IMO) a Lost Classic. (less lost now, with the help of YouTube; MLYT follows...)

Don't like those commercials that run before the movies in the theaters? Well, this weekend, Kraft Foods is introducing something new to screens across the U.S.,
"two- to three-minute branded-entertainment vignettes" that promise NOT to "knock you over the head with a bat as a brand commercial", but instead they... well... here's an example: Lunchables kids' meals present:
Alien Field Trip* (Warning: more artificially cheesy than Cheez Whiz). Kraft and other big advertisers are betting that
long-form ads will be "the Wave of the Future", and the perfect audience for them will be the folks who have already paid to see "Iron Man 2", "Sex and the City 2" or "Toy Story 3". What could possibly go wrong?

Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrance at Owl Creek Bridge" is considered "
one of the most widely read, widely anthologized, widely taught, and widely admired short stories in all of American literature." As well as TVTropes' earliest example of
[SPOILER] a
Dying Dream. An Oscar and Cannes award winning short film was made from the story,
"La Rivière du hibou" that was aired on American TV as an episode of "The Twilight Zone" (part
one,
two,
three). Since then, it has been read by
'Front Porch Al' on the CBC's "As It Happens", and been the basis of umpteen
other short films. Recently, the original film was 'mashed up' with
Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick", and now the story has gotten the full Music Video treatment, for the (not really related) song
"Unlovable" by Babybird, directed by Johnny Depp.

Anders Loves Maria, the funny, dramatic, romantic and quite NSFW webcomic, with its distinctive visuals, often frustrating characters and very Swedish attitude, has concluded after 3 years and 3 months (ending with a difficult delivery in more ways than one; the last 3 months were an excruciating wait for the last two extended chapters). A tale of semi-fidelity, baby birds, hitting the wrong hole and grown-up responsibility forced upon those who never grew up, A♥M was a favorite among other webcomic creators from day one, and, hey, they ought to know! For the 75th birthday of Elvis Presley (yesterday in most time zones), here is an Elvis Impersonator doing famous TV theme songs:

Rawhide,
WKRP (opening theme, wish he'd try the end theme),
Danger Man (Secret Agent Man, the full-length Johnnie Rivers version),
The Brady Bunch,
The Love Boat and
Cheers (maybe next time Frasier's 'scrambled eggs song'?).
Other wacky musical repurposing from the same silly singer includes David Bowie (celebrating his 62nd birthday on the 8th) doing Elvis'

Arnold Stang has passed away at the age of 91. While best known as a movie 'milquetoast' (co-owner of the gas station Jonathan Winters destroys in
"It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"; sidekick to 'Arnold Strong' in
"Hercules in New York"), he was also a cartoon voice actor who was the pugnacious mouse 'Cousin Hoiman' in in the repetitive

The New Oxford American Dictionary Word of the Year is.... UNFRIEND. That's right, the negation of the verbification of 'friend'. Well, it's not quite as cringe-worthy as some of the runners-up...
Teabagger?!? And previous winners of this honor were
Hypermiling (2008),
Locavore (2007),
Carbon-Neutral (2006) and
Podcast (2005) (links include each year's finalists, including frugalista, staycation, bacn, mumblecore, Islamofascism, funner, lifehack and squick). Best comment about the WotY (so far)?
"an unreliable yet fascinating barometer of tech". But, at risk of over-editorializing, these look more like candidates for the
Banished Words List. Clearly better is the recent list of
"A Word a Year, 1906-2006" from Oxford's website (if only for the invaluable perspective of time).

Demand Media (not to be confused with Media-On-Demand) is a
success story in the "on-line content" business creating 4000 text or video pieces
a day with an
assembly-line formula that includes an
automated editorial algorithm and
an army of lowly-paid freelancers (but, hey, they're starting to offer
health benefits!). Their own sites include the mind-numbingly practical
eHow (and
eHowUK for the non-US-centric), the .com affiliate of Lance Armstrong's
Livestrong and the infamous (at MeFi)
Cracked.com (link goes to parody of parody). They're syndicating content through their own domain registrar
eNom (better than 'parked pages', right?), and one other thing: Demand is the
#1 content provider to YouTube (and YouTube is their #1 revenue provider). All this from a
CEO/mastermind best known as
'the guy who sold MySpace to NewsCorp'.
