All our battery are belong to you

"A Smart Garage energy paradigm could simultaneously reduce the environmental impact of both the transport sector and the electricity sector. Driving a vehicle that uses electricity creates fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than driving a vehicle that uses gasoline, even if the electricity is made from fossil fuels (such as coal)."

A little? AskMe front page tweak

My little pony: how much work would be required to turn the "contains answers marked as best" checkmark on the front page of AskMe into a link to the first best answer?

Giant stone statues shrink Recent Activity

When this post shows up in Recent Activity, the long small-text quote gets truncated, the <small> tag is never closed, and the rest of Recent Activity is rendered small.

Help me get my friends' businesses off the Microsoft and Intuit upgrade treadmills

Has anybody already done the work of configuring GnuCash for an Australian small business? If so, what's involved in electronic submission of a BAS, and is there an easy way to transfer records to an accountant who thinks QuickBooks is the Only Thing? No more inside.

Be your own video game hero! Troy Hurtubise, the undisputed master of the bear-proof suit (among other things) has failed to find a buyer for its latest incarnation, and is selling the prototype on eBay.

Subverting the dominant paradigm

Louis Savain is the most coherent, articulate and ambitious Internet crank I've found. He's going to fix software, he's out to clean up physics, he's cracked the Da Vinci code, and he's got a discussion forum. Enjoy!

Can I afford not to waste electricity heating up my showers?

My old electric hot water service has sprung a leak, and I'm researching replacement options. Is there anything greener and more cost-effective available to this Australian than off-peak electric?

Is Project Entropia any good?

Is Project Entropia a good playground for a 14-year-old? Does its economic model encourage the exercising of real-world social skills, or is it just another unaccountable identity-hopping scammer's paradise?

Dumb terminals are cool again

Ndiyo systems consist of a central PC running Linux, serving a bunch of ultra-cheap, ultra-thin VNC-ish clients over 100Mbit Ethernet connections. The developers hope that mass production will soon make the clients cost as little as a typical video cable.

Why did Gmail lock me down in sector 4?

Yesterday morning, when I tried to collect my Gmail messages, Thunderbird told me the server had reponded "Lockdown in Sector 4!". I couldn't get into Gmail (POP3 or webmail interface) all yesterday and all today; it's come good tonight. Has this happened to anybody else? If so, have you ever found out why?
