Orthotics and Tennis
My husband plays lots of sports, specifically tennis. He says that totally rigid plastic orthotics are the way to go. He wears New Balance shoes with his orthotics and rotates them every day. He also uses an ankle board to condition his feet.

He wears different shoes every day. His orthotics are a 3/4 length insert that are rigid plastic, with no foam layer over them. He plays tennis around 3-4 times a week.
Have you tried thicker socks?

What computer science classes I should take before Graduate Schools?
If you want to get into systems librarianship, you might want to learn about server administration. Any web programming or scripting languages like perl, python, javascript, etc may also come in handy.

Digital librarianship might be the way to go - you can put cool archival materials online.

Gift for the newly-engaged girl
I think the book Bridal Bargains can be very useful for someone in the initial planning stage. If she's the type that might rip out pictures from magazines to save ideas, maybe a nifty looking binder or scrapbook?

Need advice for ectopic pregnancy
I had one, which was treated with a shot of Methotrexate. I went in for blood draws for several weeks afterwards so the doctors could be sure that the pregnancy was ending. I would say that my hormone levels were a little wacky for awhile afterwards. I did go on to have a successful pregnancy a few months later.

how do I know if a book/article is peer-reviewed?
One source you can use to figure out if a journal is peer reviewed is Ulrichs. The reference desk at your library probably has the book version, and if your library subscribes to the website you can look up journal information online.

Library GroupMetaMindThing
I think getting a first library job can be tough, especially if you have been limiting yourself to a specific geographic area. Do any of the public libraries around you call on substitute reference librarians from time to time? Getting yourself on the sub list at a public library can be one way to get people to know you, when a full time job is open they might be more likely to hire you. One of the public libraries where I live seems to hire most permanent positions from people who've... [more]

Advice on applying to an MLS program
I'm another UIUC grad, I don't think it is too hard to get into. If you're in Chicago, you might want to see about arranging a campus visit, even if you are going to apply for the LEEP program. I visited a few classes when I was thinking of applying, and that ended up being very helpful.
I took several programming classes when I was in grad school, and while I didn't become a programmer, they definitely helped with the more technical aspects of my job.

Everybody poops, especially babies
I have twins, almost a month old, and I've been using cloth diapers that I wash at home. Ask Moxie has a couple of good posts (part 1, part 2) I used to get an overview of the options. So far, I'm happy with the basic prefolds and some basic proraps and bummis covers. Some of the online cloth diaper stores sell sample packs, so you can try out a bunch of different diapers and covers.... [more]

Laugh-out-loud funny classic lit?
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons is post 1900, but it satirizes earlier authors like D. H. Lawrence. An orphan arrives at a farm populated by her strange relatives and decides that she has to fix everything up.

How do I write a thesis?
The University of Minnesota Library Dissertation Calculator might help break down the steps involved in writing a thesis.
Have you tried searching Dissertation Abstracts to get a sense of the topics of recent dissertations and theses in Media Studies? That might be a good thing to do.

understanding comic books
Owly is a current wordless comic. I think that people who have a hard time reading comics might enjoy some of Andi Watson's work. He has a great sense of design, and his illustrations are clear and easy to follow.

Should I pay to fly to an interview?
I've also known people who have gotten job offers at library conferences, or who started off with a phone interview. I really do think it is a shame that public libraries are expecting people to pay for their own travel, even if the libraries don't have a whole bunch of money. I interviewed for academic library positions all over the place, and I never had to pay for my flights. In a couple cases, I bought the plane ticket but was reimbursed for the full amount.

how do I survive work and grad school?
Having been through library school myself I would say that you really don't need to worry about your grades, as long as you are able to show up to class and mostly keep up with the readings. I also think trying to schedule a few minutes a day to take a walk helps.

How much cello can I get for $500?
I don't think $500 will get you much of a playable cello, honestly. I used to play a long time ago, and I think the full size cellos that I had in high school cost more in the $1500-$2300 range for a fairly decent student-level instrument. I think renting one to learn on would be a better idea, as Marnie suggests.

Things to do in Boston for New Year's Eve?
I'm more of a low key person - I'd be fine hanging out at a neighborhood bar, except there are no bars in my neighborhood :)
Less pricey would probably be best. Some of the special New Year's Events I've seen listed are a bit over the top for me.

Employee Demand?
I don't really believe that the librarian shortage is materializing very soon. I think people are working past retirement age and postions are being cut - also many of the upcoming open positions may be managerial and not really available to new librarians witout a ton of prior experience.
That being said, as MsMolly mentioned if you are willing to relocate and live somewhere rural, there may be open positions.

Help me find an airplane poster
This doesn't help with the poster part, but DK publishing specializes in non-fiction books for young readers that provide details about animals, planes, ships, etc. I've seen schmatics in some of their books before. I have a friend who teaches basic excel classes - I can ask him to send you some of his teaching examples if you're interested.

In some states if you want to work as a media specialist, you will need to get a certificate, so you will probably have to take classes and an exam. So I think doing that would make you look updated if you are going to reenter the profession.
