all the things you once tried so hard to forget…
Besides the commercial for Magic the thing that most traumatized me as a kid was, of all things, the freakin' encyclopedia. You never new what deep sea fish would pop up on the next page. And, for some reason, pictures of deep space freaked me out, too. How I developed a love of learning, I'll never know.

Photoshop Disasters
I almost posted this over in the Paul Raymond obit posting: way back in the 90s, I found some Paul Raymond men's mags where, for whatever reason (possibly due to the country where they were intended to be published?), each instance of an anus had been Photoshopped (or, given the year, possibly just airbrushed) out. All the other feminine pink spots were still there. It was very odd, and more than a little disturbing. I still sometimes wonder what the intended effect was, and... [more]

Alright, Steal
Whatever happened to "good artists borrow, great artists steal"?
I could swear I've heard a Lily Allen song that sampled Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking," but googling doesn't help. Any ideas?

Seriously, I didn't even know about his illness, and thought his career was back on the upswing.

Japanese Bug Fights
Equalpants, I don't think it's a matter of "using bugs for entertainment" that's upsetting people; it's "ending life for entertainment."

Bronson
The blog Scooter In The Sticks covered this recently. I hadn't heard of it at all before that, and now I'm curious to know just how influential it's actually been.

So, there's Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, Jr., Mary Marvel, Uncle Marvel, Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, the Lieutenant Marvels, and their Mormon cousins, the Osmonds. Good to know!
Oh, and Elvis.

We gotta go.
Does anybody here recommend the Dave Marsh book on "Louie, Louie" that's referenced in the link? I've enjoyed other stuff by him, but 272 pages on one song...

Welcome to Fright Night
American Scary is a lot of fun, if you can see a screening of it. Here's hoping they finally get a distribution deal!

Iraq was just the beginning.
Devils Rancher, I suspect it went something like this, you know, just like everything else in this administration:
Bush Administration: Well, what have you got for us?
Army Think Tank Guy: It doesn't look too good...
BA: That just won't do.
ATTG: But...
BA: Get another report that says everything we do is sunshine and light, or we'll find someone else who will.

MTV FALL 1981-2
I am so crushing on miss lynnster right now. The easiest way to my heart is saying nice things about the English Beat.
No one's mentioned Don Kirshner's Rock Concert as a Midnight Special contemporary or the way HBO used to play one or two videos to fill time between movies in its pre-Video Jukebox days. (Various Don Kirshner YouTube videos here.)
Also, Hilly Michaels and The Waitresses had a couple of videos that thoroughly... [more]

pineapple: you're thinking of Asia's Don't Cry, which for some reason often reminds me of Rick Springfield's Human Touch.
Also, a video that left an impression on me: Ultravox's Dancing with Tears In My Eyes. I can't believe how the nuclear apocalypse always felt so imminent.

How's it hangi- oh screw it
One time, my girlfriend and were giving our cat its first ever bath, and, freaking out, he leapt up and attached his claws to the skin on my forearm and was just hanging there. I then freaked out from the appearance of it, but after a moment, it sunk in that it didn't actually hurt. This is what I think of every time someone mentions A Man Called Horse, or hook suspension, (although I suspect there's much more pain involved).

I wonder, in all seriousness, if this is Paul's way of saying, after Heather, that he really misses Linda. Or, alternately, to what extent Linda weighed on his (and Gondry's) mind while developing the video.

After the DMCA, I never would've expected to hear these words from any kind of corporate bigwig.
